There is a new dawn afoot. Will you be able to say you were there?

We are witnesses to a changing of the guard, and MMA trash talk, well, never shall it be the same.

Gone are the golden-agers. Forrest Griffin, Tito Ortiz, Baby Jay Penn, Mat Serra and the godfather of this game, Uncle Chael P. Sonnen, have all shoved off into that good night (and yes, I count Tito in this group, burn!).

But let us not fashion an epoch of mourning for those fallen. Let us instead look toward the East, from whence rides a fledgling generation of trash. Ones in whom the trash is so strong, that it may well sponge away our boredom before our nodding chins ever brush the necklines of our careworn Ed Hardys.

Indeed, the future is bright for MMA smack talk, that we, as a people, may be forced to wear shades. Just as the man at the vanguard of this charge (pictured) has done.

Right. So Conor McGregor is indeed No. 1. If that spoiled the list for you, well, I’m glad you unfroze. But it goes so far beyond McGregor. These are the 10 best trash-talkers active in the UFC right now. They are ranked based on, you know, their ability to talk trash. Just remember: Although a fighter being “right” in his or her smack talk is helpful, it’s not necessary for the smack to be “good.” In fact, one mark of excellent trash talk is that it sways you to the talker’s point of view, no matter how right or wrong it might be.

Please enjoy. Unless you’re yellow, in which case, go running to your mommy. Oh yeah.

On Saturday, legendary Croatian striker Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic returns to the Octagon for the first time since 2011.

He is 40 years old and has been fighting since 2001. Over the past few years, he became an afterthought. He is a considerable underdog to Gabriel Gonzaga, the man who changed the trajectory of his career with a historic head kick in 2007.

But that moment, and all that came after it, do not tell the story of Cro Cop’s career. Today, we will look at 10 of the best and worst moments of his career. There were glories and there were massive lows, but Filipovic‘s time in the sport made him a legend.

Let’s find out why.

At UFC Fight Night 63, Chad Mendes bulldozed Ricardo Lamas in the main event.

However, the featured bout on Saturday did not impact the official UFC rankings as much as some of the contests leading up to it did. Namely, wins by Clay Guida and Julianna Pena boosted both fighters in their respective divisions.

Guida controlled Robbie Peralta on the ground en route to a clear decision victory. Meanwhile, Pena took Milana Dudieva to the canvas and earned a stoppage win with some damaging ground-and-pound in the opening stanza.

Where did Guida and Pena end up in the rankings as a result of their wins over the weekend? Here are the latest official UFC rankings, per UFC.com, which are voted on by the MMA media.

Al Iaquinta’s controversial split-decision victory over Jorge Masvidal at UFC Fight Night 63 might not have been the resounding win he was hunting for, but the Serra-Longo protégé can take comfort in the fact that he is officially on a four-fight winning streak in the sport’s most talent-stacked division.

Regardless of how one scored the fight, Iaquinta’s ability to compete on even terms with a skilled veteran like Masvidal was undoubtedly an eye-opener for some—including me and everyone else on the prediction team.

The 27-year-old has improved almost beyond measure since his time on The Ultimate Fighter and deserves an opportunity to test his skills against someone in or around the division’s top 10. Who will provide that test? Read on and indulge me as I ponder that very question.

Welcome, one and all, to Breakfast at The Octagon.

The only thing missing from UFC Fight Night 63, which began Saturday morning at 11 a.m. ET in the Washington, D.C., suburb of Fairfax, Virginia, was the strawberries and cream. Those have always looked delicious.

Maybe next time. This time, MMA fans had to settle for 10 free fights and five hours’ worth of action, culminating in a battle between featherweights Chad Mendes and Ricardo Lamas. Though nothing is official, the winner of this matchup would appear to have an inside track for the next shot at the UFC featherweight championship.

But there was more to it than that. In fact, this card was pretty loaded for a cable TV card. In the co-main event, streaking lightweights Jorge Masvidal and Al Iaquinta threw down. Other luminaries included two winners from The Ultimate Fighter (Michael Chiesa, Julianna Pena), a beloved veteran (Clay Guida) and two high-level prospects (Dustin Poirier, Carlos Diego Ferreira).

As always, the final stat lines only reveal so much. Here are the real winners and losers from UFC Fight Night 63, this time doled out to you live from the Octagon right here in Fairfax, Virginia.

And if you’re one of those literal-minded people, full results are available in the final slide.

On Saturday, Al Iaquinta will look to take another step forward in the lightweight division when he meets Jorge Masvidal on the UFC Fight Night 63 main card.

Although New York has not legalized pro MMA competition within its borders, the state is still home to some of the best in the sport. Iaquinta represents that elite group of fighters who presently call New York home or did so at some point in the past.

Unfortunately, a UFC lawsuit against the prohibition of MMA in New York was dismissed last month, according to MMA Junkie. However, there is more hope than ever that legislation will be changed now that former New York State Assembly speaker Sheldon Silver has resigned.

With New York constantly in MMA headlines as the UFC looks to take the show to Madison Square Garden, here are the five best fighters from the state who are currently under contract with the promotion.
