Sometimes all a person needs is a change. Things aren’t going well for one reason or another, so they change something up and all of a sudden everything clicks.

In MMA, that change is oftentimes centered around weight.

Maybe an athlete is cutting too much weight to compete in a division and they decide to move up and become an unstoppable force—Donald Cerrone comes to mind after his 2016 tear as a welterweight, as does Conor McGregor after he jumped from featherweight to lightweight and became champion there.

Maybe an athlete is too small for the weight class they’ve chosen and need to cut a little more weight to get in there with people their own size—not that long ago, TJ Grant became a world title contender by going from welterweight also-ran to lightweight wrecking ball. Rafael Dos Anjos became a world champion by doing the exact same thing.

Provided it’s motivated by the right factors and frame of mind (and not because you lost three of four and you don’t know what else to do), making a change in the weight class of choice can be the ideal tonic for a fighter with no other obvious path before him or her.

What follows is a look at some such fighters who may benefit from such a change based on their present standing in a division, their struggles within their present class or their pursuit of elite status being clearer if they elected to make a little switch.

Fans of the knockout have some things to look forward to this weekend.

First, on Friday, you have UFC Fight Night 102 going down from Albany, New York. In that main event, you have heavyweight Shamil Abdurakhimov taking on Derrick Lewis. All they have is 21 knockouts between them.

Then, on Saturday, you have UFC 206. Maybe headliners Anthony Pettis and Max Holloway aren’t what you think of when you think of big-time KO artists, but they are pretty dynamic strikers in their own right. But if that’s still not enough for you, why don’t you cast your eyes a few spots downward on the card? Occupying the third slot of the UFC 206 pay-per-view is a cracking featherweight matchup between Cub Swanson and a young man known as the Korean Superboy, also known as Mr. Doo Ho Choi. Don’t let the boyish looks fool you: Choi is one of the most potent knockout artists on the UFC roster today.

The whole thing got us to thinking: Who are the heaviest hitters in the UFC right now? To honor Lewis and Choi and all the big swingers out there, this is a ranking of the top five hardest punchers in the company today. They are ranked based on number of knockouts and just plain old power compared with their peers.

This is the time of year when turkeys start to feel nervous. Don’t be afraid only for the literal ones, which are killed and eaten en masse, but also for the metaphorical ones who face the chopping block of negative connotation.

Now is the time when we celebrate all that stuff. And we’re no different here in the MMA corner of the universe. I mean, we’re different, just not Thanksgiving different.

That is why, forthwith, we shall identify the MMA turkeys of 2016: people who set a low bar, failed to meet that bar, set a lower one and so on. These guys and gals aren’t up for pardon, either, if you get my reference. Fighters, executives, bureaucrats and charlatans—no one in MMA is safe!

Several writers came together to do this on your behalf. Chad Dundas. Josh Gross. Nathan McCarter. Steven Rondina. And myself, Scott Harris. Ready? Let’s get it on.

Conor McGregor became the undisputed face of the UFC in 2016 for reasons that go beyond his fighting skills.

McGregor is a modern-day version of famous professional wrestler “Nature Boy” Ric Flair, a man who wears custom suits and isn’t afraid to speak his mind regarding just about anybody and anything. Whether much of McGregor‘s act is a “gimmick” doesn’t matter to casual fight fans or even to diehards who root for him to fail. McGregor fills arenas and sells pay-per-views each time he competes.

He also made history at multiple UFC shows this year.

Per Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting, the UFC 202 show headlined by McGregor vs. Nate Diaz set a new record for UFC pay-per-view buys. McGregor, the featherweight champion as of Nov. 12, then defeated Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 to win the lightweight title, making him the promotion’s first simultaneous two-division champion.

McGregor backs his talk up inside the cage.

It’s easy to understand, upon reviewing 10 of McGregor‘s wildest moments from 2016, why he’s the top draw and top star in mixed martial arts. We already can’t wait to see what McGregor has in mind for 2017.

The 5 Scariest Fighters in the UFC

The octagon is a scary place.
The chain link fence, the screaming fans, the canvas probably smeared with the blood of those who entered before you, the anything-can-happen-at-any-moment chaos of the whole endeavor going on in a professional fistfight.

The octagon is a scary place.

The chain link fence, the screaming fans, the canvas probably smeared with the blood of those who entered before you, the anything-can-happen-at-any-moment chaos of the whole endeavor going on in a professional fistfight.

Needless to say, such a scary place is likely to be inhabited by some pretty scary individuals at a given time. Mixed martial artists are totally different than the average person almost by definition, living in a constant state of facing their fears in the name of a reach towards excellence.

There’s something uniquely unsettling about a human being who has tuned themselves so finely and made themselves so comfortable in violence and tumult that what horrifies most folks is another day at the office for the mixed martial artist. They only reach the top of the mountain by being better at inflicting harm than everyone around them.

And even with such a unique collection of people leathering up and throwing down in the cage on a Saturday night, there are some who rise above even their own ranks to become known for working on a whole other level.

They’re mean.

They’re nasty.

They’re downright scary.

Considering the time of year and the spirit of the season, it seems as good a time as any to compile a list of some of the scariest of the scary individuals who comprise the UFC roster.

We are in the final quarter of 2016, and the UFC schedule is bananas. Or, as the kids like to say these days, lit.

It’s so lit, in fact, that while choosing the top 10 fights remaining on the schedule, we left several title fights off the list. You won’t see Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson or the rematch between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson here. Those two exceptional fights, among many others, simply couldn’t crack the top 10.

In the final two months, the UFC will bring 10 live events to your television screen in one form or another, and almost every event offers a slate of exciting bouts. We are about to embark on a thrilling ride, and these are the best of the best.
