What does it take to be a MMA fighter?

A person would have to be humble, a hard worker and pretty brave to say the least. This isn’t an application to become a WWE Diva or Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider film.

When you step into the octagon, there is another human being standing across the cage coming to hurt you. There aren’t any storylines, breaks or smoke and mirrors. What you see is what you get.

Throughout generations, actresses have entertained millions by honing their craft and showcasing their hard work on the silver screen. While the majority of female actors are delegated to more sensitive roles, there are those who possess the brawn, beauty and wit to tackle the action genre.

How would a leading lady fare in an actual combat situation?

As long as Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos keeps her distance, it isn’t far fetched to believe that some actresses may be able to hold their own at a beginner’s level.

Some of these women are already gifted athletically, and all of them have starred in a film or television show that has required knowledge in a particular area of combat. Bear in mind, they would have to leave all forms of modern and medieval weaponry at home.

It probably still wouldn’t save them against Santos, but a BJJ instructor would most likely freak out if a student came to class with a samurai sword or a semi-automatic pistol.

Who are these ladies again?

Without further ado, here are 15 Hollywood actresses who would make great MMA fighters.

The Strikeforce Grand Prix will continue live from Dallas on Saturday, June 18.

The two bouts will include tough Chicago brawler Brett Rodgers taking on former UFC heavyweight champion Josh Barnett, and UFC and Pride vet Fabricio Werdum taking on Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem.

All four fighters are dangerous in their own rights. All four also have weaknesses that could be capitalized on.

Here are some of the biggest strengths and weaknesses for each fighter.

After a four-month layoff, the first round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix 2011 tournament will finally conclude this Saturday.

In one quarterfinal match, Josh Barnett faces Brett Rogers for the right to fight Sergei Kharitonov, who knocked off Andrei “I Can’t Get a Break” Arlovski back in February.

Then, Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem squares up with “Fedor Slayer” Fabricio Werdum to see who will face Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the second semifinal match, which at this pace would be scheduled for sometime after the presidential election.

Lots of interesting and divergent skill sets among these six, but one commonality they share is in the striking department. All six know how to throw, even if some do it a little better than others.

Needless to say, that causes more than a little excitement among fans. Add that some of these guys have battled before, and you’ve got a tournament rife with intrigue and the potential for serious fireworks.

Let us now break down and rank the striking skills of each of the remaining Grand Prix combatants.

Quite naturally, with all this business about the NFL lockout frustrating football fans, it is time to wildly speculate about which NFL players should sign some UFC contracts.

If 49-year-old Herschel Walker can compete in professional MMA, so can current NFL players.

Matt Mitrione and Brendan Schaub are living proof that top football players can successfully transition into elite MMA.

As everyone knows, NFL players are top of the food chain natural athletes. With some proper training, practically any NFL player could find some success in the cage.

Think about how some NFL skills would translate into mixed martial arts.

Can you imagine the arm-velocity of an NFL quarterback?

The will power, resolve and tenacity of a league leading rusher?

The instincts and reaction time of a Pro Bowl safety?

The power of a linebacker?

It’s practically mutant league cage-fighting. Hugh Jackman is already about to release a movie about robot boxing, so let’s do this thing.

These are the top 20 NFL players who should sign with the UFC.

Warning: Some of these men are realistic suggestions if they have the commitment.  However, this article is done in fun.  Please do not go pulling a Johnnie Morton

Strikeforce Dallas: Power Ranking Alistair Overeem’s 10 First-Round Beatdowns

Alistair Overeem has heard the talk. He knows you think he’s overrated. He knows you think he’s just a musclebound bully. He knows you don’t think his knockouts, while spectacular, ever come against anyone of consequence. And he knows you don’t think he’d stand a chance in the UFC.

Overeem understands all that. But if it’s all so true, why am I a little afraid for Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce Dallas this Saturday?

It’s probably because Overeem seems more than a little motivated to use Werdum as a proxy for all those Internet critics, then as a springboard to the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title and, ultimately, the Octagon.

Whether any of it actually happens (and whether the doubts over his UFC readiness are justified) is anyone’s guess. But it’s all possible when you’re capable of finishing fights as quickly as Overeem.

Whether he is overrated or not, I can count on one hand the number of fighters with as much demonstrated stopping power.

To get you prepared (or perhaps desensitized) for the violence you might witness this Saturday at Strikeforce Dallas, we proudly present a power ranking of Overeem’s 10 career first-round knockouts. Please enjoy.
