Miesha Tate Is Not A Fan Of A UFC 145-Pound Women’s Division

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champ Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate is looking to rebound after her devastating title loss to Amanda Nunes in the main event of UFC 200 in July, where the Xtreme Couture team member ate a nasty barrage of strikes from the heavy-handed Nunes, to where she was subsequently choked out via rear-naked choke.

Tate will take on the No. 8-ranked Raquel Pennington in the opening contest of the main card on UFC 205 live on pay-per-view from Madison Square Garden, looking to get back on track en-route to reclaiming UFC gold. Tate recently took part in a media lunch to promote the event, and was asked her thoughts on the possibility of the UFC adding a 145-pound weight class to the women’s divisions.

The conversation for a women’s featherweight class begun to catch wind when the dominant force in women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) known as Cris ‘Cyborg’ made her long-awaited UFC debut, where the Brazilian beast currently reigns as the 145-pound champion under the Invicta FC banner.

‘Cyborg’ currently struggles to make it down to the catchweight of 140 pounds at which she competes in her UFC bouts, and has been campaigning hard for the creation of a women’s featherweight class in the UFC in order for her to compete at a healthier weight. Tate, however, sees no need for the addition of the weight class at the moment, opting for a 125-pound weight class to be created first instead:

“Personally, I think that 145 should either be in Invicta or Cyborg should make the catchweight of 140, or go to 135,” Tate said (courtesy of MMA Fighting). “I think putting a 145 should come behind adding a 125. So, in order of preference, I think the 125 makes more sense before adding a 145. The depth at 145 is getting there, but I don’t think there’s enough 145ers to make it a really quality 145-pound division yet.”

“I don’t see myself probably coming down to 125 in the near future, unless it really is appealing financially,” Tate said. “I’ll probably just stay fat and happy at 135. … Show me the money. Show me the money and I might diet. I’ll only eat half that steak that I just ate.”

As for ‘Cyborg’s’ issues making the cut to 135 pounds, Tate believes it is possible for the Invicta chance to potentially make the maximum weight limit of 136 with a proper diet, noting that Justino came in at 139 pounds for her bout with Leslie Smith in May:

“Maybe there’s more that can be done to help her get her weight down and make that final cut,” Tate said. “I know she made 139 the fight before her last one. Those three more pounds is a lot, but I think with a proper diet that maybe it could be possible. I don’t know. I guess it really just depends.”

Cyborg Weight CutTate believes there is no shortage of challengers that will fight ‘Cyborg’ at 140 pounds, herself included, and that she is just glad she isn’t the one who has to make those decisions:

“I’m glad I don’t have to answer that question,” Tate said. “That is a tough spot. I think they’ve been doing the best that they can, having a catchweight at 140. There’s plenty of women at 135 that will step up to the challenge and fight her.”

‘Cyborg’ has yet to be booked for another bout inside the Octagon as of this writing, but as for Tate, she has quite the task in front of her in Pennington who is riding the momentum of a three-fight win streak, with aspirations to hold UFC gold of her own.

Tate and Pennington will meet on the main card of UFC 205 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

UFC 205 will end with Conor McGregor’s attempt to capture a second UFC title, but the historic show’s main card will kick off with a bantamweight clash between former champion Miesha Tate, and burgeoning upstart Raquel Pennington.

The bout marks Tate’s return to action after being usurped as the division’s champion. She’ll hope to put the one-sided thrashing behind her and get back to turning in the kind of performance that allowed her to win five straight prior to the recent defeat.

Pennington enters having won three consecutive matches, and four of her last five. Her upcoming bout with Tate, however, represents both the greatest challenge and opportunity of her professional life.

As we continue to count down the days until UFC 205, let’s examine the matchup between these two bantamweights and find out who holds an edge where, and which fighter is likely to emerge victorious.

We previously reported that UFC women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk will be defending her title at UFC 205 against Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and it appears another women’s contest has been added to the massive card.

ESPN’s Brett Okamoto has confirmed that former UFC 135-pound women’s champion Miesha Tate will make her Octagon return, since suffering a brutal first round loss to current title-holder Amanda Nunes at UFC 200, and will be taking on No. 8-ranked Raquel Pennington:

Tate (18-6) is coming off her first round submission loss to Nunes at UFC 200. Prior to losing her title, however, ‘Cupcake’ was riding an impressive five-fight win streak in which she capped off by defeating Holly Holm at UFC 196 to secure her first career UFC title.

Pennington (8-5) is currently riding a three-fight win streak, not having lost since her split decision defeat to Holly Holm at UFC 184 in February of last year.

With a potential win over Tate at UFC 205, ‘Rocky’ will have to be seriously considered for a shot at the women’s bantamweight title. And with reports of former women’s 135-pound queen Ronda Rousey nearing a deal to return against Nunes this December, the women’s bantamweight title picture is certainly an interesting one.

UFC 205 takes place live on pay-per-view (PPV) form the Madison Square Garden arena, in New York City on November 12, 2016.

Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington Re-Booked for UFC 184

Undefeated bantamweight contender Holly Holm was supposed to make her UFC debut against Raquel Pennington earlier this month at UFC 181, but a neck injury knocked her out of the fight. Now it appears that Holm vs. Pennington has been rescheduled for UFC 184: Weidman vs. Belfort (February 28th, Los Angeles), according to an MMAJunkie report.

The delay turned out to be the best thing for this matchup. Originally, Holm vs. Pennington seemed like a cruel mismatch — and then Pennington damn near murdered Ashlee Evans-Smith, her replacement opponent at UFC 181. Pennington will still be a steep underdog here, but she proved that she’s not to be taken lightly. Also, Holm vs. Pennington will now take place on the same card as the bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Cat Zingano, which will make any post-fight callouts a little more interesting.

Ashlee Evans-Smith Replaces Holly Holm at UFC 181 Against Raquel Pennington

With bantamweight rising star Holly Holm out of her UFC debut next month due to a neck injury, the UFC has signed Ashlee Evans-Smith to fill in for Holm at UFC 181: Hendricks vs. Lawler II (December 6th, Las Vegas) against Raquel Pennington. UFC officials announced the news yesterday.

If Evans-Smith’s name sounds vaguely familiar, there’s a reason for that. Carrying a 3-0 professional record, Evans-Smith is best known as the woman responsible for giving transgendered fighter Fallon Fox her only loss, via third-round TKO last October. Evans-Smith also got destroyed by Veronica Rothenhausler in five seconds during an amateur bout in July 2012.

From a competitive standpoint, Ashlee Evans-Smith vs. Raquel Pennington is actually a more compelling fight than Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington, which seemed like an obvious mismatch designed to put Holm over. I don’t know…I’m just trying to find a silver lining here. UFC.com currently lists Evans-Smith vs. Pennington as a part of the UFC 181 prelims broadcast on FOX Sports 1. A heavyweight bout between Todd Duffee and Anthony Hamilton has been moved up to the main card in the wake of Holly Holm’s withdrawal.

Holly Holm vs. Raquel Pennington Official For UFC 181 on December 6th

(Holm’s most recent performance — a 5th round starching of Julianna Werner at Legacy FC 30)

At long last, Holly Holm‘s UFC debut has been made official, with an opponent and everything! According to a press release sent out by the UFC last night, Holm will in fact be making her promotional debut at UFC 181 on December 6th. As previously reported, it appears that Holm’s potential bout with Russian scrapper Milana Dudieva has been passed over in favor of a bout with TUF 18 semifinalist Raquel Pennington.

Currently 1-1 in the UFC and 4-4 overall, Pennington’s only appearances on the big stage have resulted in an incredibly lackluster decision victory over Roxanne Modafferi at the TUF 18 Finale and a split decision loss to Jessica Andrade at UFC 171. Holm, on the other hand, is 7-0 as a professional with 6 stoppage victories by way of TKO. Expect the odds in this one to be Silva vs. Bonnar-esque.

Said Holm after signing with the UFC:

When I first started doing MMA, people asked me what my goal was in this, and my goal is to be the first female that has titles in both MMA and boxing because nobody’s done that. And it’s totally doable, and that’s my plan.

How do you see this one ending, Potato Nation? A body shot KO victory for Holm, or a head kick KO victory for Holm?
