The MMA world was dealt yet another extremely disappointing blow late last night (Sept. 7, 2017) when news arrived that UFC flyweight challenger Ray Borg was forced to withdraw from his scheduled main event against longtime champion Demetrious Johnson at Saturday’s (Sept. 9, 2017) UFC 215 from Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

After the news broke that Borg had been forced out due to an illness that was reportedly had nothing to do with his weight cut, the promotion released an official statement clarifying that the “Tazmexican Devil” had been deemed medically unfit by UFC doctors. With the main event now cancelled, they were also forced to offer refunds for customers who had bought tickets.

Check it out from their official website:

“Due to a viral illness to UFC flyweight contender Ray Borg, the main event bout against champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 215 has been cancelled. Borg was deemed unfit to compete by the UFC medical team.

UFC 215, which is now headlined by the women’s bantamweight championship between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko, will proceed as scheduled with 11 bouts at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. Moving to the Pay-Per-View main card will be the flyweight bout between Henry Cejudo and Wilson Reis. Additionally, the Mitch Clarke and Alex White lightweight contest will now kick off the FS1 prelims.

With the removal of Johnson vs. Borg, customers may request a full refund of purchased tickets at point of sale.”

With the removal, Borg delayed Johnson’s attempt to break Anderson Silva’s revered record of consecutive title defenses, which he’s now tied with “The Spider” with 10 straight.

And while both Ariel Helwani and the UFC reported Borg was removed from the card due to a viral illness that left him unfit to compete, it’s yet another blow to a promotion that has now seen three high-profile title fights fall apart at the last minute, with UFC 215’s would-be main event joining UFC 209’s anticipated Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson and UFC 213’s Nunes vs. Shevchenko during a down year when the UFC is in need of big fights more than ever.

Borg has had his issues with making the flyweight division’s 125-pound limit before, something that made him at least somewhat of a liability to book in a title fight, especially when Johnson was focused on potential opponent T.J. Dillashaw – a much more high-profile opponent – missing weight if he were indeed to cut down from bantamweight to face him.

Either way, it’s another main event down the drain, and the UFC is rapidly running out of time to turn around a highly un-exciting 2017.

The UFC has lost their main event for this weekend’s UFC 215 PPV event. It was announced late Thursday night that Demetrious Johnson’s history-making moment had been put on hold for now.

Johnson was scheduled to make his record-breaking 11th flyweight title defense against Ray Borg in the main event. However, the bout was pulled from the card when Borg was ruled out due to an illness.

Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko for the women’s bantamweight title will serve as the main event. When the news of the cancellation got out, it was met with a variety of reactions from the MMA community.

Several fighters decided to take to their official Twitter account to comment on the bout not taking place at the event. That includes TJ Dillashaw. If you recall, UFC president Dana White wanted Dillashaw to face Johnson instead of Borg, but Johnson refused to take the fight.

UFC 215 is set to take place on Saturday, September 9th at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Canada. The preliminary card will air on Fight Pass at 6:30 p.m. ET and FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET while the main card will air on PPV at 10 p.m. ET.  Here are the fighter reactions:

Breaking: Demetrious Johnson vs. Ray Borg UFC 215 Main Event Cancelled

It looks like UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson’s record-breaking title defense will have to wait just a bit longer. Johnson was set to make what would be a record-breaking 11th consecutive title defense (if successful) against No. 3-ranked Ray Borg in the main event of this weekend’s (Sat. September 9, 2017) UFC 215 pay-per-view (PPV). […]

“Mighty Mouse” is undefeated in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition when competing at 125 pounds, not having lost in 12-straight fights since going to a draw with Ian McCall back in 2012.

Borg has won two-straight in his MMA career, but has showed struggles making the 125-pound weight limit after having missed weight twice. In his career Borg has lost two bouts total, a unanimous decision to Justin Scoggins and a split decision to Dustin Ortiz.

MMA fans were interested in seeing if Borg could pull off the seemingly impossible, and best “Mighty Mouse” in 125-pound competition, putting an end to his title reign and crushing all hopes of breaking Anderson Silva’s 10 consecutive title defense record. Those fans will have to wait, however, as MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reports that the fight has now been called off due to Borg being forced to pull out citing an illness.

The report suggests that Borg has been battling the illness all week and has been deemed unfit to compete by UFC doctors. His illness was also unrelated to his weight cut despite “The Tazmexican Devil’s” history with weight-cutting issues. Borg’s nutritionist, Dr. Michelle Ingels of Perfecting Athletes, had this to say:

“It wasn’t weight related,” Ingels said. “Ray has been getting progressively more sick each day this week and still wanted to fight so badly that he put on a game face and went to all of his fight week obligations.

“However, prior to beginning the bulk of his weight cut the UFC doctor examined Borg and concluded that he was too ill to fight this week and needed time to rest and get better.”

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes’ title defense against Valentina Shevchenko has been promoted to the UFC 215 main event. Johnson vs. Borg is likely to be rescheduled for UFC 216 in Las Vegas next month (Sat. October 7, 2017).

On Thursday, Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting reported Borg had to withdraw from the scheduled bout because of an illness. The women’s bantamweight title fight between Amanda Nunes and Valentina Shevchenko will be the replacement pay-per-view main event.

Helwani cited sources who said Borg “was deemed unfit to fight by UFC doctors,” although he noted the illness was not related to the fighter’s weight cut.
