Conor McGregor wonders if boxing star Regis Prograis is biting off more than he can chew with his desire to enter the bare-knuckle world.

Prograis lost to Jack Catterall by unanimous decision for the vacant WBO international light welterweight title this weekend in Manchester. After losing back-to-back boxing fights, Prograis hinted at retiring from professional boxing to pursue other ventures.

After the loss, Prograis hinted at a move to bare-knuckle boxing, as he did in the lead-up to the Catterall fight. McGregor, one of the part owners of Bare Knuckle FC, didn’t take long to weigh in on Prograis’s remarks.

Conor McGregor ‘Welcomes’ Regis Prograis to fight bare-knuckle

In a since-deleted tweet, McGregor responded to Prograis’s post-fight declaration.

”2 time boxing world champion [Regis Prograis] looking to take off the gloves for [BKFC’s] 5 fast paced, 2 minute rounds. Yes the surface damage is a lot more gruesome but with intimate skills in the boxing realm could he successfully make the switch? We already have one two-time boxing world champion who has, and he is now World Champion Bare Knuckle Welterweight champion! We would welcome! It’s not bare knuckle boxing however, make sure and take note of this…

“It is bare knuckle fighting,” McGregor continued. There is no red and blue corner, you start centered in the ring behind a line directly in front of your opponent, and elements of clinch fighting are allowed. You can cup the back of opponents head and throw with the free hand fully legal. An amazing game! Most entertaining bang for buck show on the market today and it is not even close. A lot of the straight bare knuckle fighters feel disgruntled at thinking others can come into their sole sport and seek to take from their work. They fight ferociously to defend. It’s exciting times all round at [BKFC].” (h/t SportsKeeda)

McGregor is targeting an MMA return in 2025 after a lengthy absence from the Octagon. He hasn’t fought since a doctor’s stoppage loss to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264.

McGregor was supposed to headline UFC 303 earlier this year before withdrawing due to a toe injury. In addition to his MMA ambitions, McGregor teased an eventual appearance in the BKFC ring.

Prograis would be another welcomed star to the BKFC world, although he’ll need to brush up on clinch work before making the move. Regardless, it seems McGregor is on board to giving Prograis a shot.

Jack Catterall vs. Regis Prograis - Catterall vs. Prograis Highlights

Jack Catterall dropped Regis Prograis twice in the ninth round en route to a unanimous decision victory in Manchester, England.

The opening round saw little action, but Prograis attempted to pick up the pace in the second despite being stifled by Catterall’s sharp jab. In the final 20 seconds of the third, Catterall landed a big left hand that was by far the best connection from either fighter up to that point.

In the closing seconds of the fifth round, Prograis landed a straight left that partially caught Catterall and knocked him off balance.

Because Catterall’s gloves touched the mat, the referee ruled it a knockdown much to the chagrin of the UK fan favorite and the live crowd.

Perhaps feeling a sense of urgency, Jack Catterall started to pick up the pace after surrendering a 10-8 round to Prograis due to the highly questionable knockdown. In the ninth, Catterall caught his opponent with a one-two combination followed by a stiff right hand that caught Prograis and sent him down to the canvas.

Prograis answered the count but got blasted with a left hand and he ate the mat for the second time in a single round.

Prograis bounced back in the 10th round and may have very well taken it on the scorecards, but it was all Catterall in the 11th and 12th as Prograis was unsuccessful in his desperate attempt to land a knockout blow.

Devin Haney retained his undefeated record on Saturday night, scoring a decisive victory over Regis Prograis.

Emanatating from the Chase Center in San Francisco, Calif, Haney (30-0, 15 KO) delivered another dominant performance to claim the WBC super lightweight world championship. Through 12 rounds of action, Haney was in complete control, essentially playing with his prey throughout the 36-minute affair.

The most exciting moment of the bout came in the third round when Haney landed a big right hand that put Prograis on the canvas momentarily.

Prograis managed to get up and make it through the remainder of the fight, but never posed much of a threat from that point on.

Official Result: Devin Haney def. Regis Prograis via unanimous decision (120-107, 120-107, 120-107)

Former light-welterweight champion Regis Prograis has enjoyed the best year of his boxing career. Despite losing his WBA belt to Josh Taylor a few months ago Prograis was in the mood to celebrate big time this Christmas. The 30-year-old bought his mother a brand-new house. He documented he build up to the surprise gift by posting on social media to tell his followers how he plans to reveal what he’s bought on the big day.

Once Christmas came, he also
posted the moment she unwrapped her presents, which of course was a few packages
deep to add to the suspense. See the video below for the really cool moment.

The 140lb former champion fought twice in 2019 and clearly made a boat load of money. In April he picked up his first full world title in the World Boxing Super Series. He beat Kiryl Relikh in the WBSS semi-final. The finish came within six rounds as he claimed the title and became favorite to win the tournament outright.

However, that wasn’t to be as he ran into former
Olympian Josh Taylor in the WBSS final. The pair threw down in London, England
in October this year, in one of the fights of 2019. Two world titles, the Ring
Magazine belt and the Muhammad Ali trophy were on the line as the consensus
best fighters in the division met in a true classic fight. The bout went the
full 12 rounds and Prograis was edged out by the Scot on the cards which read
117-112, 115-113 and 114-114 in Taylor’s favour.

The Louisiana native now needs to rebuild after his defeat, hopefully claim another world title before he is matched up with Taylor once again. For now though he is enjoying Christmas with his family, doing what every son dreams of doing for their mother. My hats off to Regis Prograis this Christmas.

Is Josh Taylor vs. Regis Prograis the 2019 fight of the year?

Conor McGregor has been challenged by another boxing champion to fight inside the squared circle. It all started once the UFC star called out his manager.

McGregor made headlines when he called out actor Mark Wahlberg for a boxing bout. As a result, the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion caught some heat from one of the top names in boxing today.

That being Regis Prograis, who holds the WBA light welterweight title and has racked up a pro-boxing record of 24-0. It turns out that he is co-managed by Wahlberg. Thus when McGregor issued the challenge, the undefeated boxer took issue with it.

Prograis took to his official Instagram account to issue a challenge to McGregor to a fight inside of the ring or Octagon. He wrote the following:

“@thenotoriousmma don’t call out an actor if you’re a real fighter,” wrote Prograis. “Matter of fact, don’t call out my manager. I’m probably the only world boxing champ who would fight in the ring and in octagon.”

Boxing personality Lou DiBella gave his take on the proposed fight in a recent interview. It should be noted that he is Prograis’ promoter. According to DiBella, he thinks the boxer could beat McGregor at his own game inside the Octagon:

“I give Regis a much greater chance of beating McGregor in MMA than I do of McGregor beating Regis in a boxing match,” DiBella told Yahoo Sports’ Kevin Iole. “If he got into a ring with Regis, he wouldn’t get out of the sixth round.”
