A banger of a featherweight contest has been added to UFC 231 in Toronto.

The UFC has announced that No. 4-ranked Renato Moicano will face No. 9-ranked Mirsad Bektic on the card. This is a battle of two of the UFC’s best young prospects at 145 pounds:

Moicano has been on an absolute hot streak as of late. The Brazilian hasn’t lost since suffering his first career defeat to Brian Ortega in July of 2017.

Since, the jiu-jitsu ace has picked up back-to-back wins. In his last outing, he submitted longtime featherweight veteran Cub Swanson via first-round rear-naked choke. The 29-year-old has risen up to the top-five in the UFC’s featherweight rankings. He is looking to retain that position against Bektic.

Bektic has also been on a roll since suffering his first career defeat. He was knocked out by Darren Elkins back in March of 2017. After that, back-to-back wins have the Bosnian on the winning track again. His last victory was a big split decision win over former 145-pound title challenger Ricardo Lamas.

Moicano and Bektic find themselves in very similar positions at this point in their careers. One of them will take a major next step forward come UFC 231 in Canada. The pay-per-view (PPV) goes down on December 8, 2018, from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Chad Mendes’ Octagon Return Targeted For December

It looks like Chad “Money” Mendes could be making his return to the Octagon at UFC 231.

Chad Mendes could possibly make his UFC return before the end of the year.

Following a two-year suspension handed down by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), “Money” returned to fighting action this past summer. The Team Alpha Male product defeated Myles Jury via first-round thrashing. The former 145-pound title challenger looked as if he never left. With the big win, Mendes will likely be taking on a bigger name next.

Per a report from MMA Brasil, that’s exactly what will happen. Mendes is reportedly in talks for a return at UFC 231 against No. 4-ranked Renato Moicano. Mendes, himself, is currently ranked at the No. 5 spot. This would not only be a big test for Mendes but a career milestone for Moicano.

The 29-year-old has thrived in the UFC’s featherweight division as of late. He’s currently on a two-fight win streak that last saw him submit respected veteran Cub Swanson. His last defeat came against Brian Ortega, who submitted the Brazilian in the third round of their contest back at UFC 214 last year.

To pick up a win over Mendes would be a major selling point in a push for a featherweight title opportunity. UFC 231 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 8, 2018.

It makes sense to have a potential Moicano vs. Mendes fight on the card, as the main event features Max Holloway defending his 145-pound title against Brian Ortega.

Jose Aldo Being Targeted By Fast-Rising UFC Featherweight

This would be an amazing fight.

Jose Aldo is being targeted by a fast-rising UFC featherweight prospect.

Aldo recently picked up his first win since July of 2016. He defeated Jeremy Stephens in July with a hellacious first round body shot. The Brazilian hopes to make one last title run as his career begins to wind down.

Aside from Aldo, 29-year-old Renato Moicano has been busy climbing the featherweight ranks. He comes off back-to-back wins since suffering his first career loss to Brian Ortega.

His latest win came over Cub Swanson, who he submitted in the first round at UFC 227. Initially, Moicano wanted to rematch Ortega and avenge his sole loss.

With Ortega seemingly booked to face Max Holloway, however, Moicano is forced to look elsewhere. He’d like to test himself against the greatest 145-pound fighter of all time:

Currently, Aldo is the No. 2-ranked featherweight in the UFC. Moicano is ranked at number four. In terms of rankings, a match-up between the two fellow countrymen makes sense. Also, they each lasted competed within a week of each other.

Both men should be prepared to return to action around the same time, barring any undisclosed injuries. It should be interesting to see if the UFC awards Moicano with a fight against Aldo after his big win over Swanson.
