UFC 162: Ricardo Lamas Believes Defeating a “Zombie” Key to Title Shot

Chasing down a title shot in the UFC is an uncertain and chaotic process.

In the past, the formula was simple: If a fighter collected a series of solid results, the opportunity to compete for championship gold presented itself.

While elements of the tried-and-true equation still exist, the current landscape in the UFC has shifted to a place where it is possible for a high-profile draw to trump a contention-worthy winning streak.

These scenarios throw a wrench in the works of a divisional picture and push title opportunities further off into the distance for would-be contenders.

In the case of surging featherweight Ricardo Lamas, being passed over has only served to provide further motivation. “The Bully” is on a mission to prove he is the legitimate No.1 contender in the 145-pound weight class and is looking to keep the momentum rolling toward a title shot.

The Team Top Notch fighter has put together an impressive four-fight run where he has defeated a collection of the division’s best. In his most recent outing at UFC on Fox 6 in Chicago, Lamas dismantled former No.1 contender Erik Koch with a brutal display of ground-and-pound that led to a second-round TKO victory.

In the aftermath of his dominant showing in Chicago, a bout with champion Jose Aldo seemed to be a certainty. But after lightweight contender Anthony Pettis put in his bid to face the Brazilian phenom, Lamas once again found himself bumped out of the conversation for the time being.

Nevertheless, the 30-year-old Chicagoland native hasn’t allowed decisions beyond his control to knock him off course. Instead, Lamas has chosen to focus on what he can directly effect—continuing to win inside the Octagon.

His next challenge will come against fellow contender Chan Sung Jung at UFC 162. Lamas sees the “Korean Zombie” as the last obstacle standing between him and a long-awaited title shot, and he believes a victory in Las Vegas will leave no questions on the table.

“I wanted to fight the ‘Korean Zombie’ because the UFC really holds him in high regard,” Lamas told Bleacher Report. “Dana White is a fan of his. You see him wearing Korean Zombie shirts, so what better guy to go up against? I really want to make a statement in this fight and get that title shot. At the same time, all of my focus is on Chan Sung Jung. He is a dangerous fighter and I’m not looking past him for one second.

“I think he’s a very well-rounded fighter, but at this level, everybody is well-rounded. I don’t think he’s bringing anything that I haven’t seen before. He has a good submission game, but I roll on a daily basis with world-class jiu-jitsu guys, and it’s not something I’m afraid of at all.

When the two featherweights lock up in Las Vegas, 13 months will have passed since the 26-year-old Jung submitted Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel TV 3 in Virginia. Following the bout, Jung was forced to the sidelines with a shoulder injury which required surgery, which put his rise to title contention in neutral.

Despite being absent from the divisional race for a year, Jung’s status as one of the top fighters in the weight class has remained intact. Whether ring rust will play a factor in the fight remains to be seen, but Lamas is looking to face the best of what Jung has to offer.

“It’s always hard coming back from a long layoff, and it could be a good or a bad thing for him,” Lamas said. “You are getting back into it, and that feeling of being inside the Octagon is something you haven’t had for awhile. On the other hand, the long layoff could make him very hungry and motivate him to train harder than he ever has before. It just depends on who is going to show up on fight night. I’m preparing for the guy that is going to train 100 times harder, and that is who I’m looking to see.”

The bout at UFC 162 represents what should be the final hurdle on the path to a title shot for Lamas. Since coming over from the WEC, the former wrestling standout from Elmhurst College has made an impact with each and every performance, and he plans to put it all on the line when the cage door closes in July.

“I’m bringing fireworks,” Lamas added. “I am going out there to make a statement. I am going out there to finish the job. I think I have to finish him to really impress the UFC. I’m always looking to finish, but this is my chance to make a huge statement. I’m working harder than I ever have before, and people are going to see a caged animal when I step in there.”

Barnburner Alert: Ricardo Lamas vs. Chan Sung Jung Booked for UFC 162 in a Battle of Top Contenders

(“Don’t worry, Leonard, if this doesn’t fix your aching back, it will probably just break it.” Photo courtesy of Getty Images.)

Two featherweights who have long since punched their tickets to a title shot are set to face off at UFC 162. Of course, now that Jose Aldo is fighting #1 lightweight contender Anthony Pettis and receiving a lightweight title shot if he is successful, we should probably assume that both the winner and loser of this fight will be sitting in title shot purgatory for at least a few months. So hooray for that.

That being the case, we should still prepare for one epic clash when top featherweight contenders Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas meet at UFC 162, which transpires at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 6th.

We haven’t seen Jung in action since he submitted fellow top contender Dustin Poirier in a Fight of the Night, Submission of the Night, and Fight of the Year-earning performance back at UFC on FUEL 3 last May, as he was forced to undergo shoulder surgery shortly thereafter. Lamas, on the other hand, has been picking off contenders ever since entering the UFC. With victories over Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki, and most recently one-time title hopeful Erik Koch at UFC on Fox 6, it would be almost impossible to claim that Lamas hasn’t earned his shot should he best the South Korean.

Ricardo Lamas certainly knows how to make a statement.

The 30-year-old featherweight composed a tweet on ye ole Twittersphere tonight that hinted at his next opponent, and fight fans are going to be pleased with the announcement.

A favorite returns to take on a rapidly rising star.

Take it in, folks.

“The Korean Zombie,” Chan-Sung Jung, returns to the UFC Octagon for the first time in over a year at UFC 162 July 6, live from Las Vegas.

Lamas gets points for the The Walking Dead reference and points for the creative announcement in my book, but the UFC brass gets the most glory here.

UFC 162 is already stacked with a main event featuring the pound-for-pound greatest fighter in the world, Anderson Silva, and with the addition of Lamas vs. Zombie, this card looks absolutely bonkers on paper.

Fresh off a dominant victory over former almost title challenger Erik Koch, Lamas currently rides a four-fight winning streak over tough competition, and a win over The Korean Zombie will almost assuredly secure him a championship fight.

To his credit, The Korean Zombie has also looked phenomenal lately. He is the winner of three straight, and he took him fight-night bonuses in all three victories.

Against Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night: Nogueira vs. Davis, Zombie pulled off the rare twister—a submission popularized by 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu founder Eddie Bravo. For his efforts, Jung took home submission of the night and submission of the year honors.

He then followed this performance up with a knockout of the night performance over Mark Hominick at UFC 140, and the stage was set for his greatest Octagon appearance to date.

Jung took on Dustin Poirier at UFC on Fuel TV 3, and the resulting fight became an instant classic.

The two went toe-to-toe on the feet, on the ground, in midair and in the stands (OK, that last one didn’t actually happen) for four rounds before Jung rocked Poirier against the cage and finished the job with a tight brabo choke just one minute into Round 4.

Because of these past performances, The Korean Zombie stands as one of the most fan-friendly fighters on the UFC roster, and a matchup with Lamas promises the same fireworks we have come to expect from him.

Get excited.

The Korean Zombie is back, and Mr. Ricardo Lamas is ready for battle.

UFC News: Chad Mendes Calls out Ricardo Lamas, Lamas Says He’s Booked for May

Following yesterday’s news that Manny Gamburyan will be kept out of UFC 157 due to a broken thumb and fractured elbow, Chad Mendes wants to make sure he still has an opponent in two weeks.

The former UFC featherweight title challenger took to Twitter almost immediately after Gamburyan confirmed he was out, asking for a No. 1 contender bout with the surging Ricardo Lamas.

Lamas has been a man on a mission since dropping down to featherweight, winning four in a row (including three finishes) and defeating quality opposition in Cub Swanson, Hatsu Hioki and Erik Koch.

Making things even more interesting, “The Bully” responded early this morning, stating that he has already accepted a fight for May.

Let the speculation begin on whom Lamas will fight, but it seems safe to say fellow contender “The Korean Zombie” Chan-Sung Jung is a top candidate for the matchup.

Prior to recovering from shoulder surgery, Jung had won three in a row (all finishes) over the likes of Leonard Garcia, Mark Hominick and Dustin Poirier

The latest development seems to indicate that Mendes will be removed from the UFC 157 card that’s set for Feb. 23, but don’t rule out someone like Nik Lentz, Clay Guida or a newly signed fighter to jump at the opportunity to climb the ranks at 145 pounds.

Regardless, the featherweight title picture is going to be on hold for a little while, as champion Jose Aldo is booked to face former WEC lightweight title holder Anthony Pettis on Aug. 3

Manny Gamburyan Suffers Thumb and Elbow Injuries, Forced Out of UFC 157 Fight Against Chad Mendes

(Man, could you imagine if he was like four feet closer to his opponent when he threw that punch? Devastating. / Photo via MMAWeekly)

When you think about it, it is really remarkable how successful and durable UFC featherweight Manny Gamburyan has been in his MMA career considering how many serious and ill-timed injuries he’s sustained. The Armenian judoka lost TUF 5 after suddenly injuring his shoulder during the finals against Nate Diaz and has been sidelined multiple times since then.

Well it happened again, just two weeks before another crucial fight for him. SI‘s Melissa Segura first reported via twitter earlier today that Gamburyan has pulled out of his scheduled UFC 157 fight against fellow top featherweight contender Chad Mendes, due to a broken thumb and fractured elbow. Gamburyan later confirmed the report to MMAJunkie.

I just want to apologize to the fans and (UFC President) Dana White and the UFC. I’ve been training really hard. We’ll fight down the road for sure. My team was the main event, and we’ve been training together for many years, and I really wanted to be part of it too,” Gamburyan said, referring to his teammate Ronda Rousey, who will be fighting Liz Carmouche in the UFC 157 main event.

Gamburyan estimates that he’ll be sidelined for three months, but will know more when he meets with an orthopedic doctor next week. “The Anvil” hasn’t competed since his unanimous decision win over Michihiro Omigawa at UFC on FOX 4 in August, which snapped a three-fight losing skid.

Now, the question is who Chad Mendes will fight instead. Though the UFC has been giving Mendes cupcake after cupcake since his failed title challenge against Jose Aldo in January 2012, “Money” is in no mood for another easy match. As he tweeted this evening:

So manny’s out. How bout we find out who the real number one contender is @ricardolamasmma

Considering that Ricardo Lamas just fought two weeks ago — crushing Erik Koch at UFC on FOX 6 — we’d call that matchup a long-shot. Lamas is knocking on the door of featherweight title contendership, and probably wouldn’t want to risk his place in a line for a fight against one of the division’s beasts on two weeks’ notice. We’ll keep you posted if and when Mendes gets a new dance partner for the 2/23 card.

Aldo vs. Pettis: Let the Division Log Jams Begin

It’s super fight city and MMA fans are all mayor elect, as result of the next super fight announcement of UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo taking on Anthony “Showtime” Pettis on August 3rd.

UFC president Dana White received a text message from Pettis asking for Aldo on Saturday night, and it took less than three days to green light it.  While the announcement of this next super fight comes on the heels of the last one and will certainly stoke the fire of MMA fans, how will this have an effect on both the featherweight and lightweight divisions?

Title fights are coming and so is Christmas

While we know Gilbert Melendez will be fighting Benson Henderson for the lightweight title on the April 27th UFC on FOX 7 card, we don’t know now who will face the winner.

It could potentially still be Pettis, who was set to face the winner of the lightweight title fight prior to Tuesday’s fight announcement between himself and Aldo.  If it is him, that would mean at least December or January for the next lightweight title fight.

Aldo and Pettis is happening in August, so it would obviously be the time frame for the next featherweight title fight as well, barring any setbacks due to injury, of course.

Pound for Pound/ Pound for Ten Pounds

Never mind calling out opponents for title fights in the style of Chael Sonnen, just cutting ten pounds to another division gets you to the front of the line. Are we seeing the new en vogue trend of MMA?  First Florian, then Edgar and now Pettis will drop down to feather weight to get a crack at Aldo.

With only ten pounds separating light from feather and feather from bantam, I suppose it’s entirely possible this trend will increase and continue.

He stole my shot!!!

It comes as no surprise that Ricardo Lamas is upset about being passed over for a potential title shot vs Aldo, but let’s face facts here—Pettis vs. Aldo is a huge draw and Lamas is still a relative unknown to many outside of hardcore followers and media.

The featherweights will now have ample time to make a case for who will be the next number one contender.  The current top 3 (according to the new UFC rankings) are Chad Mendes in the top spot, followed by Ricardo Lamas and Chang Sung-Jung.

As far as the lightweights go, they have less time, and maybe more opportunity now that Pettis is set to fight at featherweight in August.  After Benson Henderson and Gilbert Melendez fight for the lightweight strap at the end of April, a new No. 1 contender could emerge.

The current top 3 according to the UFC rankings are Gilbert Melendez at No. 1, followed by Anthony Pettis and Gray Maynard.  I would suspect that even thought Pettis has stated he still wants to fight for the 155 crown, there will be another title fight at 155 after Henderson vs Melendez before he gets a crack.

Smoke and Mirrors

The new ranking system bears no meaning because match ups will still ultimately come down to Dana White and Joe Silva.

What they will do—and have already done—is create debate and give the media and fans new titles to add to fighters other than their original nicknames.  Like it or not, more fighters are going to be passed over, more super fights are going to happen and more fighters are going to yo-yo between weight classes.

As far as the rankings go—I can already hear Bruce Buffer say: “In this corner the number No. 2 ranked featherweight in the world…”
