Bellator two-weight champion Ryan Bader was certainly impressed by Jiri Prochazka’s performance on New Year’s Eve.

Prochazka defended his light heavyweight title following a first-round knockout of UFC veteran C.B. Dollaway at RIZIN 20 in Saitama, Japan. It puts the Czech star on a 10-fight winning streak with his last loss coming in 2015.

And Bader decided to call him out soon after.

“Congrats #jiriprochazka . we couldn’t make it happen in @rizin_PR so let’s do this in the @BellatorMMA cage. LHW title on the line,” Bader tweeted.

There was talk of a cross-promotional fight between Bader and Prochazka earlier this year only for it not to come to fruition. But given Bellator and RIZIN’s continued partnership in recent times, it’s entirely possible that it could happen in 2020.

Bader is undefeated in his last eight but hasn’t defended his light heavyweight title since November 2017. However, Bellator president Scott Coker expects him to defend both his titles in 2020 as well as compete four times.

Maybe a super fight with Prochazka could be one of those fights.

What do you think of a Bader vs. Prochazka fight? Who would win?

Patricky Freire plans on winning the RIZIN lightweight grand prix. What he does after that, he is not so sure of.

Freire is currently in the semifinals of the tournament where he meets Luis Gustavo at RIZIN 20 on December 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. He reached that stage following a first-round knockout of Tatsuya Kawajiri at RIZIN 19.

It made it six straight wins for the Braziian who is undoubtedly enjoying the best run of his career so far.

“Without a doubt, I feel I’m at the apex of my career,” Freire told MMA Junkie. “I’m feeling very motivated. I’m feeling great – physically, technically, strategically, and mentally. I’m on the longest winning streak of my career. Of my last six wins, four have been by knockout. Good things keep happening. I’m ready keep it going. Be sure of that.

“I’ve never trained as hard as this in the past. The one new element is a new physical conditioning coach, since my debut in Japan. I haven’t changed my team or teammates. There was no reason to change a winning team.”

One of the reasons Freire is taking part in RIZIN’s grand prix as opposed to Bellator’s lightweight grand prix is because his brother Patricio is the current 155-pound king. That is why he plans on winning the RIZIN belt and defending it soon after.

But having signed a new multi-fight deal with Bellator, he is uncertain about how things will transpire.

“My goal is to capture the Rizin championship belt,” Freire added. “I might want to defend it right away. It all depends on how things are playing out in the Bellator lightweight division.”

Do you think Freire will win the RIZIN grand prix?

Bellator MMA and RIZIN FF will be coming together for a tremendous two-day mixed martial arts (MMA) event for New Year’s Eve.

However, on Thursday, RIZIN officials announced that Bellator and RIZIN bantamweight champion Kyoji Horiguchi has torn his ACL, as well as damaged his meniscus in his right knee. Horiguchi underwent successful surgery and is currently rehabbing in Florida.

As a result of his injury, Horiguchi’s fight with Kai Asakura, which was to headline the December 31 card on night two, has been called off. The new headliner has yet to be revealed. Horiguchi himself has released a statement, announcing that he wishes to revoke his status as RIZIN champion. (via Bloody Elbow)

“When I think about everybody who was looking forward to my fight on NYE I am lost in words and have an indescribable feeling of guilt for everybody,” Horiguchi said. “I am sorry. I am sorry to Kai Asakura, I am sorry to all the fans. I cannot describe how I feel in words.

“…I have felt some abnormities in my body from last year but I didn’t take these signs too seriously. I started to train again in October but failed to realize how much wear and tear my body has obtained. And my ligament in my knee snapped. This was all because I took my body’s warnings lightly.”
