At this past weekend’s (July 29, 2017) UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, Donald Cerrone took on former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler in a fight that turned out to be an entertaining three round slug fest. Cerrone, however, came up short, suffering a decision loss.

The former lightweight title challenger had also reportedly suffered an eye injury during the fight, which could’ve potentially put him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future. It appears as if he has already gotten that issue taken care of, however, and Cerrone recently said that he’s ‘rallying’ for a fight at October’s UFC 216:

“I got my eye cleared up. I had a six-month (medical) suspension, so that’s another reason why I’m here,” Cerrone told MMAjunkie while in Las Vegas. “I went and took my eye – I got it cleared, and I’m good to go – 20/5 vision. You’d think I could see the punches coming.”

“I was just at the office rallying for Oct. 7 (UFC 216),” he added. “So we’ll see. I didn’t get knocked out this time, so I was like, ‘I’m OK.’

Given how active he is, it isn’t surprising to see Cerrone looking for a quick turnaround, but he also said that he’s expecting the UFC to book him for UFC 217, which will take place at Madison Square Garden in November:

“I think they’re going to hold me off and put me on Madison Square Garden (UFC 217, set for Nov. 4)” Cerrone said. “I have a silly hunch. But who cares? I like to fight. So bring that (expletive) on.”

In regards to his fight against the “Ruthless” one, many had wished it was five rounds in the aftermath of UFC 214, and Cerrone agrees:

“I wish we had two more rounds, man,” Cerrone said. “God, I had a good time. I really did. I knew that fight was going to be that exact thing: meeting in the middle and (expletive) just fighting. The judges – whatever. I don’t have any control over that. I can’t say ‘(Expletive) them,’” he added.

“I guess I should have fought harder, right? They always say, ‘Don’t leave it to the judges.’ So that’s that. Like I said, I wish I had two more rounds. But I legitimately have a sickness, and that was fun to me. Like fun, fun.”

Who would you like to see Cerrone fight next?

Former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler will return to action for the first time since losing his 170-pound title last summer later tonight (July 29, 2017), as he’s set to take on fellow fan favorite Donald Cerrone on the main card of UFC 214 from Anaheim, California.

Attempting to bounce back from a brutal TKO loss to current titleholder Tyron Woodley, Lawler will unfortunately enter his bout with Cerrone without the presence of longtime friend and fellow former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes.

Both Lawler and Hughes came up together in the Miletich Fighting Systems under the legendary Pat Miletich, but Hughes recently suffered various injuries from a tragic train accident last month. Hughes was initially in a coma, but it was recently reported that he was improving.

Lawler confirmed that ‘he’s doing better’, but the “Ruthless” one also admitted that the situation has ‘been hard’ to deal with it:

“Yeah, it’s been hard,” Lawler said at UFC 214’s media day earlier this week. “He’s usually here with us right by our side, hanging out, making sure I’m alright. It is what it is. He’s doing better, but that’s something his family should talk about and let the media know through their outlets, not mine.”

While he admitted that it’s been difficult for him, Lawler also said that he doesn’t put much thought into the situation unless he’s asked about:

“It’s not on my mind until like somebody asks me,” Lawler said, “Because I’m pretty good at focusing on what I need to focus on. But yeah. It’s rough.”

It seems as if the “Ruthless” one has dealt with the situation to the best of his ability.

Do you expect him to bounce back in the Octagon tonight?

We are now just one day away from the biggest UFC fight card of the year thus far, as UFC 214 is set to take place this Saturday night (July 29, 2017) live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

The card will feature a staggering three title fights, with the main event playing host to the long-awaited and highly anticipated rematch between light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier and longtime former divisional ruler Jon Jones. In the co-main event, welterweight king Tyron Woodley will defend his title against grappling guru Demian Maia. Finally, Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger will also do battle for the vacant women’s featherweight title in an unprecedented third title fight on the card.

That’s not all for the main card, however, as fan favorites Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone will face off at welterweight, while light heavyweight contenders Jimi Manuwa and Volkan Oezdemir will also do battle. Both fights hold major title implications in their respective divisions.

Without further ado, let’s take a deeper look into the card we’ve all been waiting for:

Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones

Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones possess one of the deepest rivalries in the history of the sport, but when they first met at UFC 182 in Jan. 2015, Jones scored a one-sided decision victory.

Since then, due to Jones’ legal and personal issues, Cormier has claimed the undisputed title, won four straight bouts, and successfully defended that title twice. Sure, Jones has only competed once since his initial meeting with “DC”, but it’s also true that Cormier has only gotten older in that time, while Jones still sits in the prime of his career at age 30.

At the end of the day, this bout will feature the two best light heavyweights on the planet facing off, but in my opinion, Jones is simply the best 205-pounder in the world, and arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world period.

At UFC 182, Jones was superior to Cormier in every aspect of fighting. He out-struck Cormier on the feet, while doing great damage to his body. He was more successful in the clinch, and he even out-wrestled the former Olympian.

I expect a similar fight this time around.

Prediction: Jon Jones def. Daniel Cormier via unanimous decision

Dana White: Donald Cerrone Is Too Tough For His Own Good

Yesterday (June 28, 2017), it was reported by Luke Thomas of MMAFighting.com that Donald Cerrone had suffered an injury that would force him out of his upcoming UFC 213 (July 8, 2017) bout with former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

Cerrone then took to his official Instagram account to announce that he had not suffered an injury, but rather a ‘super bad infection’ in his blood, and that he was working on getting the bout rescheduled. The report from MMAFighting also indicated this and said that the bout could take place as soon as July 29 at UFC 214.

That may not be the case, however, as UFC President Dana White told MMAJunkie that there are no plans to book Lawler vs. Cerrone for UFC 214:

“No, it won’t be on Anaheim,” White said.

White then revealed that Cerrone did indeed suffer an injury and that the promotion will make sure he’s healthy before booking another fight for him:

“Here’s the deal. ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is a stud. He’s too tough for his own good,” White said. “He absolutely wanted to fight. The kid’s got a pulled groin; he’s got a bruise from his knee to the inside of his groin. And his other knee is blowing up; he’s got staph infection.

“Could he come out and fight? Probably. Should he come out and fight Robbie Lawler with a pulled groin? No, he shouldn’t. We’re going to get him healthy and remake the fight.”

Lawler and Cerrone were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 205 last November in New York City, but the “Ruthless” one was forced to withdraw from the bout.

Donald Cerrone Explains Why He Can’t Fight At UFC 213

Donald Cerrone and Robbie Lawler were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 205 last November at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Shortly after the bout was announced, however, Lawler, who hasn’t competed since surrendering his welterweight title to Tyron Woodley last July, was forced to withdraw from the fight.

Cerrone then went on to fight twice, stopping Matt Brown at UFC 206 last December and losing to Jorge Masvidal this past January, before the UFC once again booked him against Lawler at July 8’s UFC 213 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unfortunately, the bout has once again fallen apart.

Earlier today, it was reported that Cerrone was injured and unable to compete, although he recently took to his official Instagram account to reveal that he hadn’t suffered an injury, but rather a ‘super bad infection’ in his blood:

Like the Cerrone said, the plan is to reschedule the fight. MMAFighting.com reported that the fight could happen just a few weeks later at UFC 214 on July 29 in Anaheim, California.

UFC 214 is already set to feature two title fights, as light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will take on Jon Jones, while Cris Cyborg and Tonya Evinger will fight for the vacant featherweight title, so the addition of Lawler vs. Cerrone would only add more fire power to the card.

Robbie Lawler: I Don’t Think GSP Wants To Fight Me

During the height of Robbie Lawler’s UFC welterweight title run, a fight between him and former longtime 170-pound king Georges St. Pierre was, at times, discussed. St. Pierre, however, never ended up making his return to the Octagon and Lawler ended up losing his title in brutal fashion to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201 last July.

Now, both men are in different positions.

St. Pierre, for example, has finally announced that he’ll be returning to the fight game, as he hasn’t competed since scoring a highly controversial decision victory over Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in 2013. Earlier this year, UFC President Dana White revealed that St. Pierre would be challenging Michael Bisping for the middleweight title, although White has since pulled the plug on that bout for various reasons.

Lawler, on the other hand, will return for the first time since losing his title when he meets fan favorite Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in a highly anticipated fight at July 8’s UFC 213. If he comes out on top, the “Ruthless” one will put his name right back into title contention.

As far as St. Pierre’s return bout goes, White has recently said that the Canadian star will likely compete in a welterweight title fight. Lawler, however, feels as if “Rush” will hand pick his opponent, also saying that he doesn’t think GSP wants to fight him:

“I think Georges is gonna pick the opponent that’s gonna be the best for him to get a victory and sell a lot of pay-per-views,” Lawler told ESPN’s 5ive Rounds podcast. “I don’t think he wants to fight me. I have to win a couple fights and beat a couple people up first.”

Does a bout between St. Pierre and Lawler still interest you and who do you expect GSP to fight in his return bout?
