San Diego, native, Lawler, who was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame as part of the Fight Wing earlier this week alongside Rory MacDonald for their UFC 189 title rematch back in 2015, entered tonight’s fight with Price with the intention of retiring from mixed martial arts regardless of result.
And returning to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since his 2021 rematch win over Nick Diaz, former welterweight kingpin, Lawler stung Price in the clinch during an early exchange, before sending the former to the canvas with a short shot in close — racking up a fairytale end to his stored and tenured professional mixed martial arts career.

Without a victory since September of the prior year, Robbie Lawler avenged a previous loss to former WEC and Strikeforce champion, Nick Diaz, stopping the Stockton veteran with a fourth round TKO via retirement.
Dricus du Plessis heaps praise on ex-champion, Robbie Lawler
And slated to feature this weekend at UFC 290 in his retirement outing, Lawler, who shares the card with main card star, Dricus du Plessis, has been showered with praise and branded as an “absolute legend” by the South African.
“The fact that the man, in all of his (Robbie Lawler fights, didn’t go for a submission once, that is the coolest thing ever,” Dricus du Plessis told MMA Junkie. “And that is so bad ass. He has all my respect, and he’s an absolute legend.”
Landing undisputed welterweight gold back in 2014 with a rematch decision win over Johny Hendricks, Lawler would land consecutive decision title defenses in Fight of the Year clashes with both Rory MacDonald, and Carlos Condit in 2015, and 2016, respectively.
And ahead of his UFC 290 outing, Lawler and MacDonald were both officially inducted into the Fight Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame for their efforts in their memorable UFC 194 title rematch battle in 2015.
Across his spectacular career, storied striker, Lawler landed notable career wins over the likes of Chris Lytle, Frank Trigg, Murilo Rua, Melvin Manhoef, Matt Lindland, Josh Koscheck, Rory MacDonald, Jake Ellenberger, Matt Brown, Johny Hendricks, Carlos Condit, Donald Cerrone, and Nick Diaz.

Lawler, who has enjoyed a two-series tenure with the UFC, is slated to make his Octagon return at UFC 290 next weekend during International Fight Week – taking on Niko Price in his final professional mixed martial arts outing.
Sidelined since July of last year in another International Fight Week outing, Robbie Lawler had suffered an eventual third round TKO loss against Bryan Barberena.
In September of the prior year, Lawler landed his first win since 2017, defeating former Strikeforce and WEC champion, Nick Diaz with a fourth round TKO – avening a prior KO loss against the Stockton veteran.
And previewing Robbie Lawler’s return to the Octagon next weekend, Cormier, a UFC Hall of Fame inductee and former undisputed light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, omitted the former from his selected Mount Rushmore of welterweight fighters in the promotion.
“Well, here’s the problem: There weren’t many welterweight champions,” Daniel Cormier said on DC & RC. “It’s been a division that has had so many long-reigning champions that there aren;’t many welterweight champions. I got Georges St-Pierre as the head; he’s the George Washington. Then I have Matt Hughes, Kamaru Usman, and I have Tyron Woodley.”
“And I get it,” Cormier explained. “[Tyron Woodley] and Robbie (Lawler) would seem to have very similar résumés, buy you’ve got to remember when Tyron was the champion, the way he beat Robbie to become the champion. The way he beat Darren Till, the way he defended that belt on so many occasions when he was legitimately one of the harder champions to work with, so he got no favors.”
Winning undisputed welterweight gold back in 2014 in a split decision rematch win over Johny Hendricks, Lawler would turn in two consecutive Fight of the Year title defenses against Rory MacDonald, and Carlos Condit.
