Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald can now officially label themselves UFC Hall of Fame inductees, with their memorable UFC 189 undisputed welterweight title fight rematch inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame as part of the ‘Fight Wing’.

Co-headlining UFC 189 during International Fight Week back in July 2015 beneath an interim featherweight title fight between Chad Mendes and Conor McGregor, Robbie Lawler and Canadian star, Rory MacDonald shared the Octagon in a rematch of a prior November 2013 clash.

Turning in a re-run for the ages in an instant classic and memorable showcase, then-undisputed welterweight champion, Lawler managed to successfully defend his crown for the first time as part of his undisputed title run, eventually finishing MacDonald with a fifth round TKO in their co-main event slot.

And during the official broadcast for UFC 287 tonight in Miami, Florida, the promotion confirmed how the championship rematch between Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald would be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame during an official ceremony during International Fight Week in July.

“An ICONIC moment in UFC history,” UFC tweeted. “Lawler vs. MacDonald 2 is headed to the #UFCHOF for good reason.”

Joining a long-list of inductees this year, Lawler and MacDonald will go down in the annals alongside former lightweight champion, Jens Pulver, former featherweight kingpin, Jose Aldo, former middleweight icon, Anderson Silva, and veteran former title challenger, Donald Cerrone as the latest additions to the Hall of Fame hosted by the UFC this summer.

UFC welterweight Bryan Barberena accepts call out from up-and-comer, Ian Garry.

Garry, 25, last fought in a winning effort against Gabe Green at UFC 276 in July of last year, marking the Irishman’s third pay-per-view appearance in his three fights for the promotion.

Now though, Gary has turned his attention to welterweight veteran, Barberena, who has fought the who’s who of the UFC 170lb division. Talking to GiveMeSport, Garry explained that his sights are fully locked onto Barberena and hopes to stand across from the American.

Everything starts with Bryan Barberena”, Garry said. “His last two fights have been against former champions and now he could fight the future champion. “Obviously he beat a teammate of mine in Robbie Lawler so I’d love to get that one back for the team.

Not that it necessarily means anything to Robbie or the guys but anytime I can beat a guy who has beaten a teammate of mine I’ll always take that opportunity.

Bryan Barberena responds

Garry would also tweet Barberena, to which of course, the ever-game 33-year-old was quick to accept the proposition.

Barberena has tested some of the very elite in the division before such as Leon Edwards and Colby Covington, but most recently enjoyed his best from in his UFC tenure, compiling a three-fight win streak over Darian Weeks, Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler.

While Barberena might not be world champion material or even ranked, he brings finishing ability, experience and is an undeniably tough matchup. He is the perfect type of fighter for a prospect such as Garry to be measured against, along with being a highly entertaining action fighter

Former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler is out of his fight this weekend against Santiago Ponzinibbio.

UFC 282 took another hit today as promotional veteran Lawler is forced to pull out from his 170lb bout this weekend with an undisclosed injury. The UFC are currently attempting to find a replacement for Ponzinibbio for his main card slot, in a story first reported by ESPN.

This comes following the original main event between Jiri Prochazka and Glover Texeira was scrapped after Prochazka suffered a severe shoulder injury.

Lawler would have made his second walk of the year after suffering a TKO loss to Bryan Barberena at UFC 276 back in July. Although he would lose, Lawler had some moments in the Barberena fight, stunning ‘Bam Bam’ while ultimately producing an entertaining contest while it lasted.

Ponzinibbio too will look to return to the win column following back-to-back split-decision losses against Michel Pereira and Geoff Neal. The ‘Argentine Dagger’s last win came back in May of 2021 when he would defeat Miguel Baeza.

Ponzinibbio will hope to return to the form the had from his first arrival in the promotion back in 2014, to 2018 when he would be forced out of competition with a serious illness. During this time the 36-year-old would defeat Neil Magny, Mike Perry, Gunnar Nelson, and Sean Strickland.
