Whittaker: Perry Could Have Success Moving Up

Former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker believes Mike Perry can be successful at 185 pounds.

Perry returned to the win column at UFC Vegas 4 this past weekend with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Mickey Gall in the co-main event. Afterwards, he spoke of moving up to middleweight to settle his ongoing beef with Darren Till.

Till, however, faces Whittaker next when they collide on July 25 in Abu Dhabi’s Fight Island. Till recently moved up to middleweight last year while Whittaker is also an example of a welterweight who moved up and actually became champion at 185 pounds.

And “The Reaper” believes Perry has all the tools to succeed at a higher weight class.

“Definitely he can find success. He’s a tough guy, man,” Whittaker told Submission Radio. “Every time I watch him, he surprises me, honestly. Because even that last fight, he wasn’t faster than Mickey Gall, but he looked like he just like… everything Mickey Gall threw at Mike, Mike just could handle it. He’d sprawl out of the shots, he’d counter with his own shots, when he got on top, he did damage. And he must hit hard. I assume that’s his ace, because there’s gotta be a reason why – well, given that he’s tough as nails, but he must hit bloody hard.

“I’m trying to crack the enigma of why Mike Perry is as successful as he is. But yeah, I definitely think just with him being tough and hitting hard and having that decent well-rounded skillset, like, I’m sure he could have success moving up.”

As for Perry’s controversial decision to have his girlfriend be his sole cornerman for the fight against Gall, Whittaker has no problem with it even though he did find it to be weird.

After all, if “Platinum” is happy with it, there is no reason to change things up.

“Nah, nah, even she thought it was a little weird (laughs),” Whittaker replied when asked if his wife will now corner him for his fight with Till. “Do your thing. If he likes it and he’s happy with it, why not. This is his ride and his journey, he can do it the way that he wants to. Why not.”

Do you agree with Whittaker about Perry?

Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker says he is not friends with his July 25 opponent, Darren Till, or anyone else in the division. Whittaker is focused on “crushing” the Englishman on ‘Fight Island’ to re-establish himself as a serious player in the 185lb weight class.

Ahead of the fight, Whittaker spoke to Submission Radio about his jovial relationship with Till which has seen the pair having fun and exchanging jokes on social media, he said.

“Honestly it’s the same as it always will be. It’s cool how it’s a different approach but I’m not really thinking about whether Darren (Till) is a cool guy or not. Before the fight was lined up it was cool to just josh back and forth and then have a bit of a laugh at it, try make some interest for the fight. Once we knew we were fighting I don’t really care what type of person he is. It’s one of them things where all I’m focusing on now is just focusing on crushing him.”

As fight night creeps closer Whittaker wanted to be clear he is not friends with Till or anyone else at middleweight, he said.

“For one, let me just say. I have no friends in the middleweight division. I can’t be friends with anyone I could be fighting so lets just clear that one up. And two, mate, we’re in the fight game. It’s cool to be lined up with a guy who isn’t acting like a drunk. But, at the end of the day, he’s coming to take what’s mine and I’m coming to take what’s his and that’s the game we are in.”

“The thing is we are just cool. He’s doing his thing. I’m doing mine. You know we have a bit of fun but we are both respectful. Don’t get us wrong the weeks are getting closer and our sights are set on each other’s faces you know it’s wartime. I’m ready for the fight of my life and I’m going to bring the fight of his life.”

Darren Till is hoping to fight the worst version of former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker next month. A few weeks ago it was announced the 185lb contenders would headline a ‘Fight Island’ card on July 25. Speaking to former middleweight champion Michael Bisping and comedian Luis J Gomez on a recent episode of the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast Till explained why he wants to face the worst version of Whittaker, he said.

“I’m expecting either amazing Rob or I’m expecting Rob that doesn’t believe himself so much anymore. I’m preparing for either or. Obviously, most fighters would say, well I want the best Rob. No. I want the worst Rob, make it easier for me. I don’t know what Rob we’re gonna expect. We’ve been having a good back and forth for a while now, it’s been really fun. So whatever Rob comes. I will say I’ve been preparing during [the] lockdown and while maybe it’s coming to an end maybe it’s not, Fight Island’s on the horizon. Got six weeks to fight for five rounds.”

“I hope to f**k he doesn’t show up to my fight,” he said. “Easy win, easy money [laughs].” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Whittaker hasn’t fought since losing his title to current middleweight king Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 in October 2019. ‘The Last Stylebender’ stopped Whittaker inside two rounds to claim UFC gold. Whittaker has since had an extended break from fighting after suffering burn out.

Meanwhile, Till stepped up in weight for his last fight after suffering back to back stoppage losses. Till fell to a submission defeat against Tyron Woodley in a failed welterweight title bid. He then got knocked out by Jorge Masvidal in front of his home fans. ‘The Gorilla’ returned to winning ways by beating Kelvin Gastelum over three rounds at UFC 244 to establish himself as one to watch at 185lbs.

What version of Robert Whittaker do you think will turn up to fight Darren Till?
