When Bellator inked Roger Huerta back in March in their first significant free-agent signing, company CEO Bjorn Rebney probably pictured him one day facing Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight championship. Things didn’t play out that way. Huerta lost a close split-decision to Pat Curran in the tournament semifinals, and the fight that was probably the biggest bout the promotion could have hoped for seemed like it wouldn’t happen.

But life has a funny way of bringing together the inevitable, and when Curran suffered an injury that put him out of action, Rebney wasted no time in approving Alvarez-Huerta. The bout takes place as the main event of tonight’s Bellator 33 at the Liacoruas Center in Alvarez’s hometown, Philadelphia.

While the fight is a non-title bout, it still should be hotly contested, with both men bluntly stating they have something real to prove. For Alvarez, it’s a chance to further cement his place as one of the lightweight division’s elite while Huerta aims to put his recent struggles behind and reestablish himself as a rising star.

It’s hard not to feel a little bit bad for Bellator this month. Here the upstart promotion is about to stage the biggest fight of its short history when Roger Huerta takes on Eddie Alvarez next Thursday and it seems like nobody even cares. Part of that is just sheer bad luck, what with Brock Lesnar and his magnificent new beard gobbling up the headlines prior to his title defense against Cain Velasquez at UFC 121 two days later. Some of it has to be thrown at Bellator’s feet too, since this bout would certainly be garnering some more attention if it weren’t a weirdo nontitle affair. Then there’s Huerta who, after losing three of his last four, is putting waaay too much pressure on himself this week.

“I feel like if Eddie wins, he ends up killing my career,” Huerta told Sherdog Radio on Monday. “I can’t take another loss. This is really personal for me. This is my life.”

Roger Huerta has never been known to be a fighter who craved the spotlight. If you’ve ever talked to him, you would quickly realize that he is that rare, shy athlete, who generally feels uncomfortable talking about himself.

That’s the way he was when he became the first MMA fighter to land on the cover of Sports Illustrated, and certainly the way he has been since he became a TMZ star last month.

In early August, a video surfaced of Huerta knocking out another man on the street after the man knocked out a young woman outside a bar in Austin, TX. When TMZ released a video of the street fight, Huerta instantly became the talk of the MMA world once again, but also the talk of the gossip world.

No one heard from Huerta again until he showed up on a TMZ live stream to discuss the incident.

The film that nearly pulled Roger Huerta away from MMA and one of the reasons the Strikeforce middleweight title picture was left in limbo for nearly two years will finally be released next year in the U.S.

The U.S., Australia and New Zealand distribution rights for Tekken, which began filming in 2008 and premiered this past March in Japan, was recently acquired by Anchor Bay Entertainment, opening the way for the film to hit theaters outside of Japan.

Tekken is based on the popular video game fighting series of the same name and features former Strikeforce middleweight champion Cung Le as Bruce Lee knock-off Marshall Law and Huerta as Spanish brawler Miguel Rojo.

Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez is ranked by most major MMA sites around No. 7, but if you ask his next challenger, Roger Huerta, he’d see you, and raise you.

“I put him in top three for sure,” Huerta told Ariel Helwani on Monday’s The MMA Hour.

Calling in on MMAFighting.com’s now twice-weekly program, Huerta also revealed that he isn’t bothered by the fact that his Bellator 33 fight on Oct. 21 won’t be for the promotion’s belt.
