Rory MacDonald angrily called for an investigation into his split decision loss to Gleison Tibau at PFL 5 which took place at the Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey last night.

MacDonald appeared to have easily done enough to take home the judges decision after three rounds against Tibau. However, the former Bellator to champion and fans watching around the world got a shock when Tibau was awarded a split decision win.

At the PFL 5 post-fight press conference MacDonald called for an investigation into the result as he feels he “clearly won” the fight and could’ve even been awarded all three rounds.

“I’m very disappointed,” MacDonald said. “I believe and everyone I talked to, and everyone online, scored the fight for me. Even three rounds to zero, so I think it was a clear robbery. I thought I was dominant in this fight. It was a hard fight. Gleison brought it, and respect to him, but I believe that I clearly won that fight and I think that this should be looked into.”

At the conclusion of his fight with Tibau, MacDonald had no doubt he had done enough to win and would be awarded for his efforts by the judges.

“I was totally sure,” MacDonald said. “I was so surprised when the first judge, they announced and scored it for him. I was shocked. But when I heard the split decision that he got it, I was blown away. What do you say? I just didn’t see it that way at all.”

MacDonald went on to suggest some changes that should be made to MMA judging which often throws up these type of cooky results.

“We shouldn’t have to as fighters, as competitors (worry about the decision),” MacDonald said. “We should be able to fight and rest easy that we have competent, fair, truthful judging in our sport. It shouldn’t be something that we have to worry about and stick our necks out on the line and our health to do something stupid. It’s just crazy. We don’t have this in any other major sporting even. It just seems like over and over and over again, we’re getting this in our sport and it’s just a real shame.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Rory MacDonald is a man on a mission ahead of his PFL 5 fight against Gleison Tibau and is physically and mentally ready to make the climb up the ranks once again to become an MMA champion.

MacDonald has had an up-and-down career since leaving the UFC. After earning the Bellator welterweight title at Bellator 192 over Douglas Lima, he would lose two of his next three including a rematch with Lima at Bellator 232, ultimately losing the belt.

After the loss to Lima, MacDonald signed a deal to compete with the Professional Fighters League. Following the cancellation of the 2020 PFL season, MacDonald made his league debut against Curtis Millender at PFL 2, earning the first-round submission via rear-naked choke.

Despite the setbacks, MacDonald feels like a brand new fighter ahead of his fight with Tibau as he moves closer to becoming a welterweight champion once again.

“I’ve set new goals for myself that I’m passionate to accomplish,” MacDonald said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “The past few years kind of after I won the title in Bellator, I kind of let myself get comfortable. I think I lost my focus there and unknowingly led me down a trail of not even knowing if wanted to do this sport anymore.”

“A bit of time off gave me a chance to address those issues and get back to hard work and chasing down my goals. I feel like it’s been in my heart since I first found mixed martial arts to be the best in the world and I’m hunting that position down.”

The former UFC welterweight title contender is highly regarded as one of the favorites to earn the PFL welterweight title and the $1,000,000 grand prize this season. Tibau lost his PFL season opener against Joao Zeferino by unanimous decision at PFL 2 and has dropped seven of his last nine fights overall.

The 37-year-old MacDonald is looking to get back on top of the fight game this season, and Tibau is the next step in making that achievement happen. Despite being in the later stage of his career, MacDonald appears as dangerous as ever with a new mindset and approach to fighting overall.

Rory MacDonald enjoyed a perfect start to his career in the Professional Fighters League.

The former UFC contender and Bellator champion made the switch to PFL in December of 2019 but his promotional debut has been delayed due to the ongoing global pandemic.

MacDonald hasn’t fought since October 2019 when rematched Douglas Lima.

The Canadian fell to a decision defeat and surrendered his Bellator belt in the process.

‘The Red King’ was originally slated to face David Michaud on April 29.

Unfortunately, the 32-year-old was forced out of the bout due to a congenital heart condition recently discovered by his doctors.

In stepped, Millender on just a few weeks’ notice to take on MacDonald. Things did not go to plan for ‘Curtious’ who quickly fell to defeat at PFL 2.

Millender got after it early and was putting lots of volume on his highly fancied opponent. Just before the midway point of round one, MacDonald moved in for the takedown. Millender did well to defend initially but was ultimately dragged to the mat. MacDonald took Millender’s back and had the body triangle locked up with two minutes left on the clock. The former Bellator champion quickly got his arm under the chin of his opponent and secured the rear-naked choke submission win.

MacDonald picks up six points and move one step closer to winning the PFL welterweight tournament that has a prize of $1 million.

The Canadian has stiff competition from Ray Cooper III who won the whole thing in 2019.

Cooper picked up a similarly impressive first round submission win in the co-main event.

Elsewhere on the card, UFC veterans Gleison Tibau and Chris Camozzi fell to decision defeats.

Antônio Carlos Júnior quickly tapped out Tom Lawlor with a guillotine choke.

Cezar Jesus Ferreira spectacularly knocked out Nick Roehrick in his PFL debut.
