Rose Namajunas set to fight Manon Fiorot in flyweight debut at UFC Paris in September

Former two-time undisputed strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas is set to snap her longstanding Octagon hiatus later this year, booking a flyweight debut against surging French contender, Manon Fiorot at UFC Fight Night Paris on September 2. from the Accor Arena.

Namajunas, the current number two ranked strawweight contender, has been sidelined from the Octagon since she co-headlined UFC 274 back in May of last year in Arizona, dropping her undisputed strawweight title in a forgettable championship decision rematch with Carla Esparza.

As for Fiorot, the Nice favorite returns to her native France as the current number two ranked flyweight contender, most recently turning in her fifth consecutive Octagon win in a unanimous decision victory against former title challenger, Katlyn Chookagian at UFC 280 back in October of last year in the Middle East.

Rose Namajunas is set for a division leap in September in a trip to France

MMA Junkie reports, Farah Hannoun, and Nolan King first reported the news of Rose Namajunas’ return and flyweight debut against French favorite, Manon Fiorot.

11-5 as a professional, Namajunas, a staple under the tutelage of both former UFC heavyweight, Pat Barry, and ONX Labs technician, Trevor Wittman, has reclaimed strawweight gold back in April 2021, defeating Chinese favorite and current champion, Zhang Weili with a thunderous high kick KO in just over a minute.

Defending the title against the Hebei native in an immediate championship re-run at UFC 268 of that year at Madison Square Garden, Rose Namajunas managed to land a close split decision win.

Namajunas first struck gold with a shocking upset win over the then-promotional-perfect, Joanna Jedrzejczyk back in 2018 at UFC 223 – also at Madison Square Garden with a stunning first round ground strikes TKO victory.

10-1 as a professional, Fiorot who has shot through the flyweight rankings since her UFC bow back in January 2021, has so far turned in victories over Victoria Leonardo, Tabatha Ricci, Mayra Bueno Silva, as well as former flyweight title challengers, Jennifer Maia, and the aforenoted, Chookagian.

UFC Fight Night Paris takes place on September 2. from the Accor Arena in Paris, France – with a heavyweight main between former interim champion, Ciryl Gane, and Sergei Spivak taking headlining honors.

Rose Namajunas set to remain sidelined from the UFC

Former two-time undisputed strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas is set for a continued spell away from the Octagon according to contender, Yan Xiaonan – who claims the UFC confirmed to her that the Wisconsin native will remain away from active competition.

Namajunas, the current #2 ranked strawweight contender, most recently featured in the co-main event of UFC 274 against former two-time champion, Carla Esparza, dropping her championship in a forgettable split decision title rematch in Phoenix, Arizona.

The loss snapped Rose Namajunas’ run of three consecutive victories, which included a rematch judging win over former titleholder, Jessica Andrade –  as well as a title-clinching high kick KO win over Zhang Weili, before an immediate title rematch win over the Chinese striker.

Rose Namajunas is expected to remain sidelined

Dropping her championship spoils to the above-mentioned, Esparza last year, Namajunas, a staple under the tutelage of both ONX Labs trainee, Trevor Wittman, as well as Pat Barry – was recently linked with a fight against the returning Tatiana Suarez, however, Xiaonan claims the former champion will remain sidelined.

“Rose (Namajunas) is always a name I want to fight because, in my opinion, I think she is the best female fighter in this division,” Yan Xiaonan told The AllStar during a recent interview. “So, I always want to fight her. She is also a name we discussed this time with the UFC, for this upcoming fight [at UFC 288]. But what the UFC said, is she’s maybe out for a while. I need to be active.” (Transcribed by MMA News

First landing gold back in November 2017, Namajunas, a finalist on The Ultimate Fighter – ended the longstanding reign of Polish striking ace, Joanna Jedrzejczyk with a stunning upset knockout win at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden.

Tatiana Suarez targets Rose Namajunas

MMA fans have long been awaiting the return of Tatiana Suarez. After years away, she will face Montana De La Rosa on February 25.

The undefeated UFC fighter has put together an impressive 8-0 record professionally with five consecutive victories in the UFC. She has defeated notable fighters such as Carla Esparza, Alexa Grasso, and Nina Nunes, among others, by utilizing her impressive wrestling acumen. Due to a severe neck injury, she has not fought in the octagon since 2019.

But this time, instead of strawweight, she will make her comeback in the flyweight division. But from the sounds of things, she won’t be staying at 125, but wants Rose Namajunas in either division.

Tatiana Suarez likely dropping back down to strawweight

In an interview with The Schmo, Tatiana Suarez explained her weight class plans for this year. She said:

“I’ll just ask for another fight 115 after this fight. I know I will because I’ll be lower in weight because I just got done fighting. I’m not that big. I’m not going to be cutting a lot of weight for 125 so it will be easy to stay down. I’ll be smaller. I’ll go through this fight camp so I’ll get leaner.”

Suarez added that she would like at least two more fights this year and likely will not be staying at flyweight, but is aiming for 115. Unless Rose Namajunas, former strawweight champion moves up. Suarez explains:

“I think I heard that Rose is maybe going up … I wouldn’t mind making that my next fight at 125. If I’m being honest, I would love that fight … I think I can beat her. My grappling is so superior to her grappling. I think I would make it a nightmare for her, in either weight class.”
