Former strawweight champions Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade are set to rematch at UFC 251 on July 11 according to a report from Combate.

The two women first fought at UFC 237 for the 115lb belt held by Namajunas in May of 2019. On the night ‘Thug Rose’ started well and looked a level or two above her Brazilian opponent. In the second round though she was brutally knocked out as Andrade slammed her way out of a submission attempt to claim the title.

Since the fight, Namajunas has taken some time away from the sport and this will be her first fight back. Andrade, on the other hand, fought and lost against Weili Zhang. The Chinese fighter swarmed Andrade in the first round of their fight and scored a quick knockout win. She has since gone on to defeat strawweight great Joanna Jedrzejczyk in one of the best fights of all-time. Yesterday the current 115lb queen revealed she is hoping to fight Namajunas in her next defence, she said.

“My preference is to fight Rose because I believe she is the highest level and most-skilled martial artist outside of myself in the division. She would be a good challenge for me.”

Unfortunately for Zhang it appears she will have to wait for her shot at Namajunas – at least until after July 11.

Who do you think wins in the rematch. Rose Namajunas or Jessica Andrade?

UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang has shared she would like to face Rose Namajunas next.

Speaking to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Zhang shared that while she didn’t have any fight booked she wanted the former champion next.

“My preference is to fight Rose because I believe she is the highest level and most-skilled martial artist outside of myself in the division. She would be a good challenge for me.”

The champion recently defended her belt against former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk in February, edging her out in a decision after a five-round war that would seem to be a strong fight of the year contender.

Rose has not competed since she lost her title to Jessica Andrade back at UFC 237 in 2019. The two were scheduled to rematch at UFC 249 in April until a family member of Rose’s passed away from coronavirus. Due to this, Namajunas withdrew from the fight.

Taking to twitter ESPN’s Brett Okamoto shared that he had spoken to UFC President Dana White who intends to rebook the matchup between Namajunas and Andrade.

“Per Dana White (@danawhite), the fight he’s still trying to make for Rose is Jessica Andrade II. But he said he needs to talk to her personally and make sure she’s comfortable under the current conditions.”

Outside of a matchup with Rose, Zhang has spoken of moving up in weight to challenge the Flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko in her next fight.

Shevchenko was initially booked to defend her title against Joanne Calderwood in June before pulling from the bout due to an injury. Shevchenko shared she is expecting an august return against Calderwood as previously booked.

At this stage, it is unclear who Zhang will face in her next bout however or when the champion will make her return to the octagon.

Rose Namajunas

Former strawweight champion Rose Namajunas is the only fighter on the UFC roster who doesn’t want to compete during the COVID-19 pandemic according to the promotions president Dana White.

Namajunas was due to rematch Jessica Andrade at UFC 249 but withdrew from the card. At first, her reason for pulling out was unknown but her management team later confirmed she had multiple coronavirus deaths in the family – check out the statement below.

“Immediate release: @rosenamajunas withdrew from UFC 249 due to 2 deaths in the family related to the Coronavirus,” the statement read. “Her hopes are to return to the Octagon as soon as possible but for now we ask for people to respect their privacy during this time.”

Speaking post-fight at UFC Florida, White was asked if he is struggling to get fighters to compete during the global pandemic. The UFC boss said not at all. As far as he knows Namajunas if the only fighter on the roster who doesn’t want to compete right now, he said.

“Guys are training, people are training right now. People want to fight. So I don’t see an issue making a fight with anybody right now. Other than Rose — there might be others, I don’t know if this is a fact — but I don’t think there is anybody else who has brought up issues about fighting right now.” (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

‘Thug Rose’ hasn’t fought since losing her 115lb title against Andrade in May 2019. Namajunas looked fantastic in the early goings but was ultimately knocked out cold by a slam from the Brazilian in round two. Since then Andrade has gone on to lose her title against Weili Zhang who made a successful first defence of the title last time out against former strawweight queen Joanna J?drzejczyk. The winner of Namajunas vs. Andrade II was expected to be the next in line for a shot to reclaim the title.

Is Dana White being unfair by singling out Rose Namajunas for not fighting during the COVID-19 pandemic?
