Rose Namajunas turned down fight with Weili Zhnag

Former champion Rose Namajunas has
revealed she turned down the chance to face Weili Zhang for the strawweight
title.

The first ever UFC titlist from China will instead square off against another former champion in Poland’s Joanna J?drzejczyk in the co-main event at UFC 248.

‘Thug Rose’ last fought when losing her title against Jessica Andrade at UFC 237 in 2019. Despite dominating much of the early stages Namajunas found herself knocked out for the first time in her career after being slammed by Andrade who was escaping a submission attempt.

Despite coming off a loss the UFC were more than willing to give Namajunas another shot at the title, however she refused the fight with Zhang. Explaining her situation on UFC Unfiltered Namajunas said.

“I was even offered Weili
at the time, but I just – at the time I was still dealing with a lot of my own
(things), just getting my head right, and I hired a mental coach that’s helping
me do a lot of different things. And so there was a lot of work that needed to
be done.

“I wasn’t ready for that
just yet. I didn’t even really know if I wanted to fight at that time anymore,
just because I wanted to make sure that this is something that I wanted to do
and I wasn’t just like, ‘Let’s have another fight just because I’m good at
it.’”

The UFC 237 loss to Andrade
was admittedly a tough one to take for Namajunas who not only had to deal with
losing her title but knowing exactly what she did wrong.

It was definitely one of
my harder losses that I’ve dealt with,” Namajunas said. “I think the thing is,
I knew exactly – it was easier in the sense that I knew exactly all of the
things that I did wrong. The harder part is taking responsibility for myself,
and yeah, maybe situations around me that I couldn’t control could have been
better. But I could have taken control over a lot more things in my life. So
ultimately, taking that responsibility is the hardest part out of everything.”

The manner of her defeat has also played a part. After being slammed on her neck Namajunas realizes she could have been seriously hurt or even disabled. The fear got the better of her, but that’s something shes let go of heading into her rematch with Andrade at UFC 249 in Brooklyn.

“I got dropped on my head
– I could have been paralyzed. It’s like, ‘Well, I wasn’t paralyzed, so why
should I be paralyzed in fear if it didn’t happen?’” Namajunas said. “I should
celebrate the fact that I’m walking around and it’s a miracle that my neck
feels better than it’s ever felt in the past few years. Prior to that
happening, I had a fracture in my neck, so it was hurting a lot – and after
that, I feel great.”

Former strawweight queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk has the chance to reclaim her crown at UFC 248 on March 7. The Polish powerhouse will meet current champion Weili Zhang in the co-main event. It will be the Chinese fighters first defence of the 115lb title she won against Jessica Andrade in 2019.

Despite realising the tough task ahead Jedrzejczyk has already begun thinking about her first title defence. The strawweight division is stacked with talent and plenty of worthy title challengers including the likes of Tatiana Suarez and Andrade. However, one particular fight is more appealing than the others to the 32-year-old. Jedrzejczyk told BJPENN.com that she wants to complete the trilogy with former champion Rose Namajunas to try settle the score with her long-time rival and make big money in the process.

“I am
really proud of myself and my team of how we fought that last fight against
Rose Namajunas. The fight could have gone either way and the loss was hard to
swallow and maybe I didn’t do enough. Now, I know I believe in myself 100 percent
and can do enough to win. I’m really happy for Rose that she is back
fight and fighting Andrade and having the rematch. We will see what is next,
but that fight makes sense as it is big money. I want that one.”

First up Namajunas has an eagerly anticipated rematch coming up against Jessica Andrade. In the first fight Andrade powered her way out of a submission by slamming Namajunas to the mat, scoring the knockout win and claiming the 115lb title in the process. However, her title reign was short lived as Zhang stopped the Brazilian inside one minute at UFC Shenzhen in August 2019. The two will now meet again in what will likely serve as a number one contender fight at UFC 249. The winner will be confident of securing the next title shot against either Jedrzejczyk or Zhang.

Rose Namajunas is ready to return to the Octagon, and she’ll do so by seeking a bit of redemption in the process.

ESPN is reporting that Namajunas will rematch Jessica Andrade at UFC 249 on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on April 18. The card is expected to be headlined by a lightweight title fight between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. The Namajunas vs. Andrade bout will be a rematch from their initial meeting last May.

Namajunas was defending her then-strawweight title, seemingly winning the contest on the scorecards with her superior striking performance, before being knocked out by a freak slam takedown from Andrade in the second round. That was the last bout Namajunas would compete in, while Andrade went on to attempt a title defense against Weili Zhang in China the following August.

Unfortunately for the Brazilian, Zhang finished her in the first round of their matchup in under a minute to become the UFC’s first-ever Chinese champion in history. Now, they’ll run things back on what is expected to be one of the most anticipated PPV events of the year.

What do you expect from the rematch between Namajunas and Andrade in April?
