Robbie Lawler is always in a war.

And interesting.

And a near-lock for “Fight of the Night.”

But the reigning UFC welterweight champion is well known and all of that is expected of him when he headlines UFC 201 this Saturday night vs. Tyron Woodley.

The fight I think could be the “show-stealer” is the co-main event between strawweight contenders Rose Namajunas and Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

Namajunas (5-2) has won each of her last three, including two via submission, since falling to Carla Esparza in the finals of The Ultimate Fighter. The 24-year-old’s only other defeat came to Tecia Torres three years ago in Invicta FC, and that came via decision and she avenged that this past April.

Four of her five wins have been submission victories, including a 2013 flying armbar in 12 seconds vs. Kathina Catron that earned her all sorts of recognition.

After submitting Angela Hill last year, Namajunas took care of Paige VanZant by putting a beating on the “golden girl.” She rattled and rocked her for the better part of four rounds before subbing her in the fifth.

Kowalkiewicz, six years the elder of Namajunas, actually started training in Krav Maga before switching over to Muay Thai. Krav Maga is described as “a self-defense system developed for the Israel Defense Forces that consists of a wide combination of techniques from aikido, judo, boxing and wrestling.”

She is a perfect 9-0 in her MMA career and 2-0 with the UFC, scoring back-to-back decisions over Heather Jo Clark and Randa Markos. Kowalkiewicz also holds a 2014 win vs. Mizuki Inoue.

And heck, they should likely earn some extra publicity for having 21 letters in their combined last names.

It might surprise many people to know that UFC welterweight Matt Brown fears something.

Brown, who meets Jake Ellenberger this weekend at UFC 201, was forced to confront his fear of dogs when Rose Namajunas “pet-forced” her dog on Brown.

You can see the encounter, along with more from Robbie Lawler and others, in this fourth edition of UFC 201: Embedded.

Rose Namajunas Refuses To Overlook Karolina Kowalkiewicz For Jedrzejczyk

A pivotal contest in the women’s strawweight division is set to get underway in the co-main event of UFC 201 this Saturday (July 30, 2016), when No. 3-ranked Rose Namajunas clashes with the undefeated No. 5-ranked Karolina Kowalkiewicz.

Namajunas, a former 115-pound title challenger after losing to Carla Esparza for the inaugural strap, is on an impressive three-fight win streak as of late, and is looking to put a stamp on her recent run with a win over Kowalkiewicz in order to campaign for a shot at the gold once again.

Current champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, however, is picking against ‘Thug’ come Saturday night, stating that Namajunas is not always mentally strong while Kowalkiewicz continues to push forward:

“I think Rose, sometimes, is lost,” Jedrzejczyk said. “Her head is not [always] strong. She’s not always mentally strong. I think Karolina might win this fight because she’s always going forward. I don’t know. But if Rose wins, she’d deserve a title shot.”

carla esparzaWhile Namajunas’ ultimate goal is to one day hoist the coveted strawweight title above her head, she is careful to not overlook Kowalkiewicz the way the media and fans seem to be doing ahead of their UFC 201 date:

“Non-stop, every day people are asking me about it,” Namajunas told ESPN. “It is what it is, I guess. Media is not with you every day, so they end up being 10 pages ahead of you. They’re always saying, ‘When is the next story, when is the next headline?’ Everyone is jumping way ahead and I’m not even at this fight yet.”

Following Namajunas’ remarks of being “done crying, done not sleeping at night” after her contest with Tecia Torres, ‘Thug’s’ head-coach Trevor Wittman decided it was time to pull her fiancé, and former UFC competitor, Pat Barry back from camp in attempt to give the No. 3-ranked strawweight a bit more focus heading into her contest:

“I always say, when you get the families involved, there’s an emotional tie,” Wittman said. “My father, when I used to play baseball, he would stand behind the cage and there was always this distraction because I’m so emotionally involved with my father.

“Having that emotional involvement is too much assessment. I think we ran into that with the last fight. He’s a very emotional guy, it’s a little much high energy.

It’s a cool thing, getting her hyped up, but on an energy level we needed to keep it focused. One thing, when it comes to a corner, when you’re speaking high or speaking low, you always want to be able to assess the energy of a fight.

Sometimes a coach needs to cool you down, sometimes a coach needs to wake you up, sometimes a coach needs to piss you off. But when there’s non-stop, high energy, that makes you fight non-stop high energy.

I wouldn’t say it’s a bad thing, but at this level we needed to have everything toned in.”

Rose Namajunas‘Thug’ had predicted on The Ultimate Fighter 20 (TUF 20) that she would be the champion come ‘2015 or 2016’, however, she feels now that her words may have affected her mentally. Now, however, Namajunas claims she is feeling more and more like a champion each and every day:

“When I was on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ [in 2014], I said I’d be champion in either 2015 or 2016,” Namajunas said.

“I think maybe, by saying 2015 but not committing to it, I opened the possibility, mentally, of coming close but not achieving it.

I’m waking up every day feeling like a champion now, but there are steps to it. I’m taking this day by day.”

Namajunas will meet Kowalkiewicz in the co-main event of UFC 201, which takes place live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia this weekend on July 30, 2016.

Following her first-ever UFC loss to Rose Namajunas and a successful stint on “Dancing With The Stars” where she finished in second place, popular women’s strawweight Paige VanZant is set to return to fighting.

“12 Gauge” announced on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” today (Wed., June 23, 2016) that she will fight Bec Rawlings at August 21’s UFC on FOX 21 from Vancouver, British Columbia. VanZant stated her excitement for the bout:

“I am so excited about this match-up. I think it’s perfect. Especially coming back into the UFC after being away with ‘Dancing with the Stars’,” said VanZant. “I love Canada… I can’t wait for this one.”

VanZant will look to rebound from a dominant submission loss to surging contender Rose Namajunas in the main event of UFC Fight Night 80 last December, the first stoppage loss of her MMA career. With holes to fix and haters to prove wrong, VanZant said the time of “Dancing With The Stars” helped her be rid of some prior nagging injuries from training:

“The few nagging injuries I had in my two previous UFC fights are completely gone, because I haven’t done the impact training, the head-on collisions,” VanZant said. “It actually really helped. It was great cardio and kept me in shape… I really miss MMA and the UFC.”

The 22-year-old fan favorite was also reported to have signed on for a significant role in the upcoming martial arts film “Kickboxer: Retaliation,” but has instead turned down the part in order to focus on training.

She’ll face an opponent with more momentum in Rawlings, who recently secured her second straight UFC win by defeating Seohee Ham at March 20’s UFC Fight Night 85 after submitting Lisa Ellis at UFC Fight Night 65 in her native Australia last May. The win streak comes at a pivotal time for the Aussie, as she lost her UFC debut to Heather Jo Clark at the The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 20 Finale in late 2014.

But VanZant still holds the higher ranking at No. 10 over the unranked Rawlings, making this a vital statement bout for both women.

UFC on FOX 21 also features the featherweight debut of former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, who will meet Brazilian jiu-jitsu wiz Charles Oliveira.
