Chris Roman had an eventful Friday night at Titan FC 73.

The featherweight fighter, who boasts a 3-3 professional MMA record, was in action on the card against Asa Ten Pow (1-0).

Roman’s match-up was over before it really began when 20 seconds into the bout, he shot for his opponents’ legs. As he was on the ground working on his takedown, Ten Pow uncorked an illegal knee that knocked Roman out cold. As he slumped to the floor the commentators speculated about if he was faking before the fight was ultimately ruled a no-contest.

Post-fight, Roman quickly rallied to turn his bad night at the office into the best night of his life when he proposed to his girlfriend, who happens to be UFC veteran and WMMA pioneer, Roxanne Modafferi. Of course, she said yes and the two celebrated in the cage before Modafferi took to social media to break the good news to her fans.

“My boyfriend took an illegal knee at 21 seconds into the fight and it got called a no-contest,” Modafferi wrote on Instagram. “I’m sad for Chris that he didn’t get as much fight time…. but then HE PROPOSED! ???????????I went “omg are you okay… Um YES!!” I love you for the rest of our lives, Chris Roman!! The fight result sucked but it was kinda epic you proposed on a national broadcast… #engaged #proposal @christhegladi8rroman”

O’Neill is a highly fancied 8-0 prospect who will be favourtie going into the fight but Modafferi is known for causing upsets having previously bounced Maycee Barber and Antonina Shevchenko from the ranks of the unbeaten.

Former UFC women’s flyweight title challenger Roxanne Modafferi has broken down her decision to retire from MMA after her fight against Casey O’Neill next year.

Modafferi has entered the cage 44 times in her professional career. During her time competing across the world in countries like Japan, the United Kingdom, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates, the veteran fought for titles in Strikeforce, Invicta FC, and the UFC, as well as a host of local promotions.

Since falling short of flyweight gold against Nicco Montaño in 2017, the 39-year-old has competed nine times in the UFC, defeating Maycee Barber, Antonina Shevchenko and Andrea Lee. “The Happy Warrior” is currently tied with Gillian Robertson and Katlyn Chookagian for the most fights in the promotion’s 125-pound division. She’ll make her 10th and final walk to the Octagon in the weight class next February at UFC 271.

Modafferi: “Brain Health Is Really Important”

Despite hoping to reach the milestone of 50 professional fights, Modafferi has decided she has to prioritize her health and hang up her gloves following her 45th outing. Ahead of her clash with the surging O’Neill, Modafferi discussed her career and decision to retire with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. The Delaware native explained the changes over the past year that have convinced her to call time on her lengthy career.

“A few fights ago, I decided that I really, really wanted at least 50 fights. So I was like, alright, I’m going to at least do that and see what happens. And then over the course of the last year or so, I felt like punches and blows to the head in training were affecting me more that they used to — like, when I tried to push through it, I’d get a headache afterwards. And I was like, ‘No, we can’t have that.’ My brain health is really important, so I started wearing headgear.

“I’m good [taking punches] in a fight. I just realized, alright, I’m getting up there with my mileage — now’s probably a good time [to stop]. I don’t want to start having any concussion symptoms. I want to stop before that starts happening, because I’ve heard of some people who, even before they turned pro, had to retire. So I just want to be super careful with my brain health, and reaching 50 [fights] seems like a really good achievement for me.” (h/t MMA Fighting)

If Modafferi is to bow out of the sport on a high, she’ll have to stop the momentum of the fast-rising O’Neill, who’s built an unblemished 8-0 record that includes three UFC finishes in three Octagon appearances. Modafferi is aware of the threat the Scottish-Australian possesses, but has warned the 24-year-old that she’s ready to try everything in her final fight.

“She’s as good as anybody, and she better be careful because everything I’ve ever wanted to do in a fight and haven’t tried yet, I’m going to try on her,” Modafferi said, laughing.

“Flying, spinning, rolling, magic, kamehameha. I don’t know. You imagine.”

Casey O'Neill, Roxanne Modafferi

“King” Casey O’Neill is expected to take on Roxanne Modafferi in a women’s flyweight clash in a classic up-and-coming prospect versus hardened veteran matchup.

O’Neill will look to face Modafferi on February 12th on the UFC 271 PPV card. The venue and location are yet to be confirmed as well as the headlining fight for the event. The news was first reported by MMA Ideas.

O’Neill (8-0) is undefeated in her professional MMA career so far with eight victories, five of those coming by way of finish as a submission or knockout. She was last seen in action against Antonina Shevchenko, where she impressed the masses when she TKO’d the Kyrgyzstani fighter in the second round last month.

O’Neill has proven to have a well-rounded skill-set, as she has demonstrated this year with three victories in the UFC, two by TKO and one by rear-naked choke submission against Shana Dobson, Lara Procópio, and the aforementioned Shevchenko. Flying high after joining the promotion, O’Neill faces arguably her toughest test against Modafferi and will hope to keep the winning momentum going. As of this writing, the 24-year-old is the #15-ranked flyweight and hopes to crack into the top 10 with a win against Modafferi in February.

Modafferi (25-19) last fought back in September at UFC 266, where she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Talia Santos. Prior to that, she also lost to Viviane Araújo back in January, the first time Modafferi has lost back-to-back since 2006. Hoping to rebound from her loss, she will look to get back to winning ways against O’Neill and show why she deserves to be ranked in the women’s flyweight division.

Currently ranked as #11-flyweight fighter, Modafferi is a veteran of 44 MMA fights and is by far the most experienced fighter O’Neill faces with wins over the likes of Antonina Shevchenko, Maycee Barber, and Andrea Lee.

Do you think Casey O’Neill is the future of the women’s flyweight division, or do you think Roxanne Modafferi derails the hype train?
