UFC President Dana White shared his admiration for both boxing greats Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. following their exhibition boxing match this past weekend.

During the UFC Vegas 15 post fight press conference White stated that he had watched the bout while cage side for the UFC event live at the UFC Apex facility.

“I was nervous, he’s 56 years old,” White said about Tyson. “Time is undefeated, time takes us all down and one of the things that I was worried about for Mike is that he has this incredible aura still you know, and 56 years old fighting is a young man’s game.”

“All that being said, he looked fucking awesome tonight, I was blown away by how good he looked and I was worried about you know, Roy’s 51 years old but Roy’s been way more active than Tyson has been but Roy actually got more tired than Mike tonight which was shocking and I’m happy for them, I hope they both made a fucking zillion dollars and ah, yeah it exceeded my expectations,” White explained.

White was then asked by MMA Junkies John Morgan what his thoughts were on a potential Anderson Silva vs Roy Jones Jr. boxing fight and if he or the UFC would like to be involved in some way.

“I don’t know,” Dana White said. White then continued to explain that while he is a fan of fighting he “truly believes” the fight business is for younger fighters.

“I get there is still some name value out there and you can go out there and you can make some money but when you’re a fight fan I want to see the best in the world, the best up and coming kids, the best in the world, I want to see these guys fight and I want to know who is the badest motherfucker in the world in ever division and as a fight fan that’s just who I am and that kind of stuff doesn’t interest me you know? Anderson Silva had his day, Roy Jones Jr. had his day, today is not their day, It’s just not,” White explained.

Earlier this month Silva was cut by the UFC after taking a loss to Uriah Hall in the main event of UFC Vegas 14. Following this, the company decided to let go of Silva who had lost seven of his last eight fights. Following his departure, Roy Jones Jr. expressed his interest in welcoming him to the boxing ring after his bout with Tyson.

Ahead of tomorrow night’s exhibition comeback opposite former heavyweight champion, ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, decorated former middleweight and light heavyweight titleholder, Roy Jones Jr. has spoken of hopes to finally stand opposite former UFC middleweight champion, Anderson ‘The Spider’ Silva in the squared-circle.

Jones Jr. – who features opposite Tyson in an exhibition boxing matchup tomorrow night, has been continously linked with a boxing match against the recently released Brazilian striker, Silva, with a bout between the two failing to ever come to fruition. 

The 51-year-old Pensacola, Florida boxer called for a pairing with Curitiba fan-favourite, Silva following his retirement back in December 2017, but as of yet, we’ve yet to see the two stand opposite each other. Given Jones Jr.’s upcoming return and the fact that Silva is no longer under contract with longtime home, the UFC – the possibility of the pairing seems somewhat more likely than maybe previously believed.

Jones Jr.’s callout follows recent, similar welcoming claims from Rizin FF leader, Nobuyuki Sakakiraba, who refused to distance the promotion from a deal to sign the soon to be 46-year-old counter striker, unlike the likes of Bellator MMA, ONE Championship, PFL – and even BKFC.

“I have great memories with Anderson Silva from the PRIDE days and in my personal opinion, I think his career took off in Japan,” Sakakiraba said in a recent statement.”I have heard that Japan has a special part in his heart as well.“

“I do feel that I would like to help him fulfil his wishes out of respect for what he has accomplished and what he has done for our sport. I haven’t talked to him yet but I would be interested to see if we can come up with something that makes sense for him to start his final chapter in Japan.“

For legendary mixed martial artist, Silva, his gleaming run under the UFC’s banner came to a close at UFC Vegas 12 on Halloween, dropping a penultimate-round knockout defeat to fellow striker, Uriah ‘Prime Time’ Hall in a main event tilt. 

While Silva is regarded as one of the most dominant, masterful competitors at the peak of his powers as middleweight champion, Floridian puncher, Jones Jr. is also regarded as one of the greatest boxing talents of all time.

With a 66-9 professional record, Jones Jr. has notably dispatched the likes of Felix Trinidad, Antonio Tarver, Richard Hall, Julio Cesar Gonzalez, Montell Griffin, James Toney, and Bernard Hopkins to name a few.

Former two-division champion Conor McGregor is excited ahead of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. and agrees with ‘Iron Mike’s’ self-assessment ahead of his return to boxing after more than 15 years retired from the sport.

McGregor was responding to an interview that the heavyweight boxing legend had with ESPN Ringside. Ariel Helwani asked Tyson what his former trainer Cus D’Amato would have said about him returning to the ring at 54 years-old. “The Baddest Man on the Planet” was surprisingly frank and up-front about he believes his longtime mentor would say.

“He would have said, ‘Why did you take so damn long? God damn,” Tyson answered. “He would have said, ‘Look, you lose one fight against this guy, you get discouraged and throw everything away? You should have been doing this, you should have continued doing this’. He would have told me that I allowed my feelings to get the best of me and that I gave up. He would have said that. Because my feelings are high focused about myself, and it prevented me from making a living for my family, people I love, even myself.”

McGregor took to Twitter to largely agree with Tyson. It should come as no surprise, given that McGregor has long been a proponent of a mind-over-matter mentality.

D’Amato was a legendary boxing manager who helped guide fights such as Floyd Patterson and Jose Torres to world championships on their way to the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He also tutored some of the most successful trainers in Teddy atlas and Kevin Rooney. He was most noted for popularizing the “Peek-A-Boo” boxing style.

Tyson met D’Amato shortly after his mother died, and the manager quickly become a father figure for the aspiring boxer. D’Amato was in Tyson’s corner when he became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history – surpassing D’Amato’s old protégé, Patterson. He passed away a little over a year afterwards.

The long anticipated match between Tyson and Jones Jr. takes place November 28. The bout will actually be an exhibition fight, with the promoter selling it as more of a hard-sparring session with no knockouts or scorecards involved. The rules of the fight have raised some eyebrows and drawn some criticism – even from Dana White – but the bout is still trending to be highly successful.

UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya will be putting his commentary chops to the test during the upcoming bout of two of Boxing’s greatest, Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr.

First reported by Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso, the UFC champion will be commentating alongside Boxing great and former champion “Sugar” Ray Leonard and veteran sports commentator Al Bernstein.

In his interview with Barrasso, Adesanya expressed his thankfulness for getting the opportunity to be there, sharing that he never thought he’d see Tyson compete again.

“Mike’s been retired for so many years, so this is something I never thought I’d see again. But as soon as I saw a clip of him training, I thought, ‘What the f***? Mike Tyson is banging again.’” Adesanya said to Barrasso.

Adesanya continued predicting that we will not see an exhibition match as advertised, instead, we will be treated to the pair of boxing legends “gunning for each other.”

Extremely grateful for the opportunity, Adesanya shared that both competitors are people he looks up to and fighters who styles he has studied sharing that he would watch both fighters compete before he would compete in kickboxing.

“I used to watch their highlights before my kickboxing fights just to fire myself up because I was such a fan. I can’t wait to be on this call with ‘Sugar’ Ray Leonard and shoot the s*** about fighting and share some of my insights, as well.” Adesanya said in his interview with Sports Illustrated.

The UFC Middleweight champion is coming off a successful title defense against Paulo Costa in September. On this card Jan Blachowicz defeated Dominick Reyes to claim the vacant Light-Heavyweight title. Since this time Adesanya has expressed his interest in moving up to Light-Heavyweight to take on Blachowicz for his newly claimed belt. While Blachowicz has expressed interest the fight has not been signed currently.
