Roy Jones Jr has threatened to walk away from his eagerly anticipated eight-round exhibition bout against boxing legend Mike Tyson. Jones Jr and Tyson were originally set to square off on September 12 but that date was changed to November 28 in order to maximize revenue from the fight.

‘RJ’ is unhappy with the date change and says he is willing to walk away from the fight if he is not compensated correctly.

“I’ve had to cancel other stuff to be out here, it’s upset my calendar, I’ve got to change things,” Jones Jr said to Daily Mail. “That’s why we have to table bulls**t now. That’s the biggest issue, I’m not a full-time boxer anymore so I do other things to make an income. If I can’t do other things then I should be compensated for that, because it changes the schematics. It’s not acceptable.”

Jones Jr. says his lawyers are currently trying to re-negotiate his deal.

“We’re trying to figure something out, my lawyers are talking with their lawyers, trying to figure out ways to make it a better situation so that I can compensated for it, that is more beneficial for me to do. If they don’t make it make sense, it (the fight) would be off,” Jones Jr explained. “Why would I change the date and mess up the rest of my year when I agreed to September 12.

“They said they wanted to get a crowd. If you want to get a crowd, that’s a different type of money. If you want a big event, that’s a different type of money,” Jones Jr. continued. “You think I’m going to say, okay, let’s look at my money, but I’m not getting no better percent. How dumb is that to me? So let’s see what happens.”

The eight-round exhibition bout between legendary heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr has been postponed. ‘Iron Mike’ was set to end his 15-year retirement from the sport on September 12. The 54-year-old will now have to wait a little longer to get back in the ring after it was announced his fight against Jones Jr. has been pushed back until November 28.

According to sources who spoke to The Ring the highly anticipated bout will still go ahead at a crowdless Dignity Health Park in Carson, California. The fight will be broadcast on pay-per-view and via social media app Triller who will also produce a 10-part docu-series ahead of the event.

The reasoning behind this re-scheduling is believed to be financial. Tyson and his team believe by pushing the fight back until later in the year they can maximise revenue. A meeting was held between both sides and Jones Jr. was happy to agree to a change in date.

Both men have spoken with confidence ahead of the fight. Tyson says he’ll go for the knockout despite the fact the fight is being billed as an exhibition.

“Hey, if the opportunity comes, I’m always looking for it,” Tyson said. “I just went on my journey to go on this mission and a lot of people are giving their comment which I’m very grateful for, but like I said before this is search and destroy and I’m looking forward to capturing my glory.”

“The fighting game is what I’m about and hurting people is what I’m about. I’m not concerned [about getting hurt], we’re both professionals, we know how to handle ourselves, and whatever happens, happens.

Jones Jr. is confident he’ll be able to survive the early onslaught and take out Tyson in the later rounds, he said.

“Don’t think I ain’t seen the weed-smoking videos. Don’t think I ain’t seen all of that, I know what is going on. I’m not stupid I’m not going to go out there and collide with him in the first round and (try to) take him out like I am a fool. He is good early. He is strong early. He is still a strong lion but he has a cheetahs mentality. A cheetah mentality means I gotta get it quick. If I don’t get it quick that cheetah is outta breath. If you don’t get it quick, it belongs to me then.”

Roy Jones Jr

Roy Jones Jr is open to the idea of boxing former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

On September 12, Jones Jr will return to the ring to face heavyweight legend, Mike Tyson in an eight-round exhibition bout. In an interview with MMA Fighting Jones Jr revealed he is hoping to have more fights facing off against ‘Iron Mike’ and Silva is very much still in his sights after years of back-and-forth about the potential match-up, he said.

“People have been talking about Roy Jones Jr. vs. Anderson Silva in a boxing match for years, even before the McGregor-Mayweather fight happened. We were supposed to happen first. And, unlike that fight, Anderson has professional boxing experience. McGregor didn’t. So, this is much more of a competitive fight, especially with us being older. Now, because he has experience it is much easier for him to survive. He doesn’t have to deal with the young tiger Roy Jones. He gets to deal with the older Roy Jones where he may have a chance to deal with because I’m much older than what I once was. But, that still is a big event and it would’ve been a big event if it happened back then. As Mike shows you now, never say never, the opportunity may come now.”

Jones Jr says provided he gets out of the fight with Tyson safe and healthy he is more than willing to box ‘The Spider’ in his next fight, he said.

“He is a great friend of mine, he’s a good person. Doesn’t speak good English but he always wanted to make a fight with me, they just never allowed him the opportunity to do it, or they never had the right time to do it,” he said. “We both gave our words that if we ever got the opportunity, we would. If the opportunity comes along, I’m sure that maybe one of the other fights I entertain. I did give him my word that if the opportunity came, I would. So if I’m healthy and cool after this fight, he could get it.”
