Two seasoned heavyweights in need of a win met inside the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 95. Roy Nelson (22-13) did battle with Antonio Silva (19-10-1). “Big Country” was on the losing end of four of his last five bouts. Meanwhile, “Bigfoot” had a record of 1-5-1 in his last seven fights.

Ouch.

Luckily for “Big Country” he turned his fortunes around a bit, although he had some gripes at the end of his victory.

Nelson threw a leg kick and ducked under a hook. Nelson parried a body kick attempt and missed a right hand over the top. Silva went high with a kick that was blocked. “Bigfoot” ate a right hand. “Big Country” stepped in and connected with a body kick. Nelson pressed his opponent against the fence. The two separated and the round ended shortly after.

The start of the second round saw both men throwing leather. Silva went for a kick, but got clipped with a right hand. Silva kicked Nelson below the belt and time called. When the fight resumed, “Bigfoot” went for a takedown, but it was thwarted. Nelson went for a left hook, uppercut combination but he couldn’t find the mark. Silva was tagged with a right hand. “Bigfoot” was dropped with an uppercut and he landed some more punches to finish the fight.

Post-fight, Nelson went over to referee “Big” John McCarthy and did a little shove with his foot. He looked none too pleased with McCarthy’s officiating. He told Jon Anik there was no sense in having to punch Silva as many times as he did and the fight should’ve been stopped sooner.

Final Result: Roy Nelson def. Antonio Silva via TKO (Punches) –  R2, 4:10

“Bigfoot” Silva Ready For Anything To Happen Vs. “Big Country”

Two of the biggest heavyweights in MMA will collide Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 95, as Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva meets Roy “Big Country” Nelson.

For Silva, the bout is a chance to get back on track after losing two straight and four of his last five. The Brazilian has recorded just one win since a 2013 knockout of Alistair Overeem.

“Roy Nelson is a tough opponent, a guy who has proved to withstand many strikes and who has a heavy right hand,” he said. “I respect him a lot, we are friends, I even helped in his training for the fight against Overeem. He really likes to fight on his feet, but in his last fight, against Derrick Lewis, he proved to be able to take the fight to the ground. Because of that, I tried to train for everything to be prepared: wrestling, grappling, jiu-jitsu.”

Once a challenger for the UFC heavyweight title, Silva has suffered back-to-back first round knockout losses to Stefan Struve and Mark Hunt. He was also finished by Frank Mir and Andrei Arlovski around a second round TKO win vs. Sao Palelei in 2015.

“I don’t know what can happen, but I am sure it will be a great fight,” Silva said.

Roy Nelson Believes There’s Too Much “Excess” At Top Of USADA

Roy Nelson has been outspoken about the use of illegal drugs in MMA for a long time.

“Big Country,” who returns to action this Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 95 vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, believes there are things that the USADA is doing right.

But he also feels there is more than could be doing.

“You just have to get rid of the excess at the top,” he said during an appearance on UFC Tonight Wednesday. “Then I’d pay the fighters the extra money, and just call people up and tell them who to test. It’s not that hard.”

Regardless of all that, Nelson believes he can still compete with the best heavyweights in the world and plans to showcase that vs. Silva.

“The challenges he offers are everything,” he said. He’s a complete mixed martial artist. He’s beat the best. He’s knocked out (Alistair) Overeem. He beat Fedor (Emelianenko). It’s heavyweight. You can win some and lose some, but you’ve got to watch.”

Roy Nelson Rips USADA: I Could Do A Better Job

Heavyweight slugger Roy “Big Country” Nelson has always been an advocate for stricter drug testing in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), which would make you think that he’s content with the UFC bringing in the help of third-party testing organization United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), but that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Nelson is scheduled to face off with Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the co-main event of this weekend’s (September 24, 2016) UFC Fight Night 95, and he was recently tested ahead of the fight, although he wasn’t pleased with the answer he received when he asked when the results would be in:

“We got USADA doing the testing, and I got tested last week, and I said, ‘Are the tests going to be back before the card I’m fighting on?’” Nelson told MMAjunkie. “They said they don’t know. So that’s how good USADA is.”

Not only that, but “Big Country” feels as if he could do a better job himself:

“I want to know how much (UFC Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance) Jeff Novitzky gets paid and how much USADA gets paid because I could take their jobs and do a 10 times better job,” Nelson said. “I’d actually just make sure it actually counts and not give certain guys a pass. Then, when there’s a guy we don’t care about, he all of a sudden pops or pops after the fight then suspend them for a year after you’ve already made money off them. It doesn’t make any sense.”

“It can definitely get better,” Nelson said. “I’ll take Jeff’s job and still keep my job, and I could do a better job because it’s not that hard. It’s not that hard to do the smell test.”

Nelson will look to bounce back this weekend after losing four of his last five bouts.
