Bleacher Report’s Michael Evans:

The topic of MMA judging has become a topic of hot debate in recent years. Some decisions have begun to seem like absolute robbery. Dana White himself has even stated that he knows some of the judges are bad. But, no one seems to have the right answer. Nevada, however, is moving in the right direction at least.

MMAjunkie.com’s Steven Marrocco reported today that the Nevada State Athletic Commission has approved the use of monitors for the forthcoming UFC 130 event in Las Vegas. NSAC will now place seven-inch monitors next to the judges. NSAC passed this with a 5-0 vote.

The UFC is trying to spread this practice, already getting the monitors approved for UFC 131 in Vancouver and UFC 133 in Philadelphia.

Cageside monitors were previously used in California for three UFC events held there.

UFC 130 will take place this Saturday, May 28, from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Preliminary card action includes the bantamweight debut of the highly regarded and extremely talented Brazilian, Renan Barao.

Spike TV will air a tremendous bantamweight matchup between Miguel Torres and Demetrious Johnson.

Main card action includes a middleweight bout between the hard-hitting ex-Marine, Brian Stann, scheduled to square off against the former Sengoku middleweight champion, Jorge Santiago.

Additional pay-per-view fights include a barn-burner between Thiago Alves and Rick Story in the welterweight division.

The co-main event of the evening is a heavyweight duel between the former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, and the up-and-coming Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights winner, Roy Nelson.

In the main event, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, will enter the Octagon against Matt “The Hammer” Hamill.

With questions looming regarding both main events, experts and pundits do not seem to share a common viewpoint as to who will be the victor for both fights.

To provide more clarification, UFC hall-of-fame fighter, and recent retired MMA superstar, Randy Couture, sat down with Affliction to analyze and predict the outcome of “Rampage” versus “The Hammer.”

“So many questions surround “Rampage,” Couture stated. “Where is he training? What is he involved in? Is he taking it (this fight) seriously? Will he be prepared? What kind of shape will he be in?”

These questions and more cloud experts’ views as to how Jackson will perform this Saturday.

In contrast, Couture is confident that Matt Hamill will be extremely prepared for this light heavyweight battle.

“Hamill is not the guy you don’t want to fight not fully prepared. (Hamill) has got a ton of heart, a great wrestling background, and showed some tremendous striking in his last couple of outings.”

Familiar with both fighters and their strengths and weaknesses, Couture commented on “Rampage’s” strengths inside the Octagon.

“(Rampage) hits like a mack truck. If you stand in front of this guy (Quinton Jackson), he will flat knock your head off.”

“Jackson is predominately a striker coming into this fight. It’ll be interesting to see if Hamill can take him to the ground and take some steam from him (Jackson).”

Continuing to comment on both fighters abilities inside the cage, Couture stated, “Rampage is more that inside fighter. He throws those hooks. He throws those uppercuts. He throws those types of punches. Hamill’s style of striking draws Rampage in and frustrates him. This makes it easier for Hamill to potentially take him down.”

In the end, the hall-of-fame fighter and legendary icon Randy Couture feels that Hamill will have his hand raised in victory.

“I’m gonna go with the potential upset with the underdog in Matt Hamill.”

Confident that a solid Hamill will defeat a potentially unmotivated Jackson, Couture’s pick is in line with my prediction posted earlier this week.

This Saturday will determine whether or not Quinton Jackson is back in the light heavyweight championship discussion once again, or if Matt Hamill continues to climb up the contender’s ladder.

I welcome your comments.

As the feud between former teammates Jon Jones and Rashad Evans continues to escalate in drama, another pair of training partners are quietly going about their business before they face off next Saturday at UFC 130.

Next weekend’s bouts features a co-main event battle between former UFC Heavyweight champion Frank Mir and the Ultimate Fighter Heavyweights winner Roy “Big Country” Nelson.  Both fighters, born and raised in Las Vegas, are good friends and teammates who are putting aside their friendship to square off in their hometown at the MGM Grand.

“We get paid to win,” Roy Nelson told the press during Thursday’s media conference call. “You put your family before all your other friends,” he said.

Avoiding the back and forth trash talking that the Jones-Evans situation has sparked, Nelson has nothing but the utmost respect for his opponent.

“You always got to be a scared of Frank,” Nelson said. “He’s a true mixed martial artist.”

Asked to compare Mir with his last opponent, Junior Dos Santos, Nelson said that Mir is “bigger” and should “hit harder”.

This respectful gesture means a lot considering Nelson is the only person to not be finished by top contender Dos Santos.

Earning his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Renzo Gracie, a man Nelson considers a “living legend” and “one of the best (in) MMA“, “Big Country” has faced Mir in competition before, defeating him in a grappling match in 2003.

Commenting on the match, Nelson doubts that he has an advantage over Mir on the ground, joking that he is “a bigger and fatter guy now.”

With a win possibly pushing the victor into title contention, both fighters will undoubtedly come out looking to put on a show.  Regardless of the winner, Mir and Nelson have shown the MMA world that teammates can fight each other while remaining friends.

At UFC 130, former heavyweight champion Frank Mir is set to lock horns with former IFL champion and “TUF” Season 10 winner Roy Nelson.

While this may be the first time these two have met inside a UFC octagon, it isn’t the first time they have competed against one another.

In the eight-man absolute tournament at Grappler’s Quest 2003, Nelson defeated Mir by points in a grappling match.

This video should serve as a reminder that Nelson shouldn’t be underestimated in the grappling department heading into his bout with Mir.

He may not look like your average professional athlete, but “Big Country” has the grappling chops and enough striking to hang with the best heavyweights in the world.

With that said, there shouldn’t be much made of a grappling match that took place eight years ago. Mir was just beginning his MMA career, and Nelson had yet to even take a professional fight. Besides, there are more aspects to MMA than only grappling.

It’s still fun to take a walk down memory lane and see where these guys were before they became the superstars they are today.
