Ryan Couture, the son of UFC legend Randy Couture, improved to 2-0 in his brief professional MMA career with a solid victory over Lee Higgins at Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers card.

The third-round submission via rear-naked choke was a more impressive all-around performance than Couture’s professional debut. Couture showed solid grappling and effective if not particularly powerful striking, and he finally put Higgins away with just 19 seconds remaining in the third round.

“He’s tough as nails,” Couture said of Higgins. “I’m real glad I was finally able to get him there at the end.”

Strikeforce Challengers 14 will take place in Cedar Falls, TX tomorrow night. The card is headlined by undefeated Lightweight, Lyle Beerbohm and Pat Healy, whose recent loss came at the hands of Josh “The Punk” Thomson, but all eyes are on rising star, Ryan Couture to see if he will indeed follow in the natural footsteps of his legendary father, Randy Couture. Ryan’s Lightweight bout against Lee Higgins is the 3rd billed fight on the Main Card but it speaks volumes to his name recognition that he is placed in front of the Main Event fighters in the official fight poster above. Oddly enough, placed alongside Couture in the forefront of the poster is Eric Apple, who hasn’t fought since a loss in 2009 at Strikeforce Challengers 5; so we’re really unsure why he gets placed at all prominently on the poster. Who’s he know?

Ryan Couture will seek to finish his fight as fast and as furiously as he did in his pro-debut back at Strikeforce Challengers 10 when he demolished Lucas Stark with a Triangle Choke in 1:15 seconds in the first round. You can watch Strikeforce Challengers 14 tomorrow night on Showtime Network.
