Ricardo Lamas will remain on Saturday’s UFC Vegas 8 card.

Originally, Lamas was expected to fight jiu-jitsu wizard Ryan Hall. It was a very intriguing matchup, but it was reported Hall withdrew from the fight. The promotion was searching for a replacement opponent and on Sunday night, Bill Algeo announced on FaceBook he has signed to the UFC and will fight Lamas on short notice.

Ricardo Lamas has not fought since he suffered a first-round TKO loss to Calvin Kattar at UFC 238. In the loss, he sustained a broken jaw and was healing the injuries.

The 38-year-old is just 1-3 in his last four with a win over Darren Elkins and a split decision loss to Mirsad Bektic and knockout loss to Josh Emmett. Lamas has been a perennial top-15 contender and has notable wins over Charles Oliveira, Jason Knight, and Diego Sanchez.

Bill Algeo, meanwhile, has had two tries at earning a UFC contract but came up short. In 2017 he was taking on Jared Gordon at CFFC 63 which was an episode of Dana White Looking For a Fight. Unfortunately for Algeo he suffered a decision loss and had to remain on the regional scenes. He then rattled off four straight wins and fought Brendan Loughnane on the Contender Series and lost by decision.

Algeo is currently 13-4 and coming off a decision win over Tim Dooling at CFFC 83 on August 13 to return to the win column after the loss to Loughnane last summer.

The latest lineup for UFC Vegas 8 is as follows:

  • Anthony Smith vs. Aleksandar Rakic
  • Robbie Lawler vs. Neil Magny
  • Alexa Grasso vs. Ji Yeon Kim
  • Magomed Ankalaev vs. Ion Cutelaba
  • Impa Kasanganay vs. Maki Pitolo
  • Bill Algeo vs. Ricardo Lamas
  • Hannah Cifers vs. Mallory Martin
  • Zak Cummings vs. Alessio Di Chirico
  • Alex Caceres vs. Giga Chikadze
  • Polyana Viana vs. Emily Whitmire
  • Christian Aguilera vs. Sean Brady

Featherweight contender Ryan Hall has been forced out of his fight against Ricardo Lamas on August 29 according to John Morgan of MMA Junkie who took to social media to break the news, he wrote.

“Rough news for the hardcores: Ryan Hall is out of his Aug. 29 fight with Ricardo Lamas. Replacement currently sought, but will likely need to be U.S. citizen or someone with work visa due to current restrictions. Anyone game for Lamas on short notice?!?!?”

The UFC is currently looking for a replacement opponent to face off against Lamas next weekend. However due to the short-notice and COVID-19 restrictions whoever replaces Hall must be a U.S citizen or have an active working VISA in the States.

Hall who was pulled from this fight for undisclosed reasons hasn’t fought in over a year. The submission specialist picked up a unanimous decision win over Darren Elkins at UFC Sacramento in June 2019.

Lamas hasn’t fought since suffering a TKO loss to Calvin Kattar at UFC 238 in June 2019. The former UFC title challenger has lost three of his last four fights and is currently outside of the featherweight top 15.

Featherweight contenders Ryan Hall and Ricardo Lamas will face off on August 29 in Las Vegas according to reports. Combate initially reported the booking which has since been confirmed by MMA Fighting who wrote.

“Multiple people with knowledge of the promotion’s plans confirmed to MMA Fighting that a fight between Ryan Hall and Ricardo Lamas will take place at the UFC’s event on Aug. 29. The fight card will take place at the UFC APEX in Las Vegas.”

This news comes one day after the UFC announced they would be hosting nine shows in Las Vegas next month including UFC 252 and four Contender Series cards.

Hall and Lamas were originally booked to fight at UFC Oklahoma City in May before the ongoing global pandemic caused that card and many other to be scrapped. The Ultimate Fighter season 22 winner Hall has been perfect but inactive during his UFC career. Since winning TUF in 2015 he has competed just three times beating Gray Maynard, BJ Penn and Darren Elkins.

Lamas is looking to get back to winnings ways after being stopped by fellow featherweight contender Calvin Kattar last time out. Prior to that he snapped a two fight losing streak by beating Elkins by third round TKO.

The final UFC card of August doesn’t have a main event yet but several bouts have been announced including a light-heavyweight match-up between Anthony Smith and Aleksander Rakic. Featherweight contenders Zabit Magomedsharipov and Yair Rodriguez are also expected to face off on the card.

Ryan Hall

Exciting featherweight submission specialist Ryan Hall is still looking for a fight. The 35-year-old hasn’t fought since July when he showcased his striking ability whilst beating Darren Elkins over three rounds.

Speaking to Ariel Helwani earlier in the week Hall said he’s struggling to find anyone willing to fight him. According to the TUF veteran seven ranked fighters have refused to fight him.

“It’s been a little bit of a struggle to find an opponent. I’ve been directly turned down or been told they’re unavailable from 12 all the way down to 6, So that would be (Shane) Burgos, (Jose) Aldo, (Josh) Emmett, (Jeremy) Stephens, (Renato) Moicano, Frankie (Edgar), (Calvin) Kattar – pretty much everyone down to ‘Korean Zombie’ or Yair Rodriguez. He’s been unavailable, so it’s been a little bit tough to find an opponent.

“I was directly turned down by Josh Emmett. I was directly turned down by Renato Moicano. I guess there’s three guys in the division in Frankie Edgar, Jose Aldo and Renato Moicano, all of them very tough guys – and of course, Edgar and Aldo in particular, iconic figures – but they’re holding spots in the division that they’re not currently competing in, and it just seems like there’s a logjam that’s difficult to deal with.”

Hall is hoping to return to the octagon by May but accepts that may not be possible. He also is playing around with the idea of acting as stand in for the rumoured match-up between Brian Ortega and Zabit Magomedsharipov.

“I’m
hoping to fight in May, hopefully against the toughest opponents possible,”
Hall said. “That’s always what I’ve asked for. That’s always what I’ve hoped
for and always what I’ll be ready for. Also, I heard that there’s the potential
for a Zabit (Magomedsharipov) and Brian Ortega fight, and if one of those guys
stubs their toe and gets hurt, I’ve asked the UFC if I could be an alternate
and slide in for that.”

In an
ideal world Hall says he’d love to face Ortega. It would be a fight for the grappling’s
fans, with two of the best in the game squaring off.

“I think it would be really cool to fight Brian Ortega,” Hall said. “He’s obviously a super tough guy, put on an excellent fight against Max Holloway, shows a great deal of durability, very tough guy. Great skills, has excellent wins over Frankie Edgar, over Cub Swanson, over Moicano. Tough on the feet, good on the ground, someone who would intentionally engage me on the ground I think, because he’s probably not afraid of other people either, so I feel like that would be fantastic.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Ryan Hall has found himself in a very interesting position. Hall is having difficulty finding an opponent willing to step into the Octagon with him.

This is likely due to Hall’s unique style of fighting. The jiu-jitsu ace has received mixed criticisms for his style of fighting, which relies heavily on his grappling ability, more specifically his leg lock attacks. Many are in awe of his ability, while others complain about the entertainment value in his contests. With that being said, Hall recently took to social media to, admittedly out of character, call out Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar.

While he didn’t receive a response from either of the future UFC Hall Of Famers, he did get a response from UFC bantamweight Pedro Munhoz. Munhoz is willing to jump up to 145 pounds in order to face Hall.

“He asked for a fight with Gray Maynard, a 40-year-old,” Munhoz said. “He asked for Jose Aldo, who just dropped to bantamweight. He asked for Frankie Edgar, who’s almost 40 and just broke his jaw. I’d fight this sh*t. It would be a good one.

“He has the best jiu-jitsu in the featherweight division, and I have the best jiu-jitsu in the bantamweight division. I have nine wins via guillotine choke, and he has a bunch of heel hooks.”

Now, Hall has responded to the challenge, asking Munhoz if he’s down to scrap at UFC 249 in April from Brooklyn.

“Thank you, @PedroMunhozmma. It would be a pleasure to face an athlete of your high caliber. How about April 18 in Brooklyn?”

Would you like to see Hall matchup with Munhoz next?
