Sage Northcutt will be attending an upcoming ONE Championship show in the wake of his free agency period.

ONE Championship has been making some big moves as of late, and they don’t seem to plan on stopping anytime soon.

Last month, the Singapore-based promotion landed former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in free agency. If that wasn’t enough, they proceeded to make history alongside the UFC. ONE obtained Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in a trade with the mixed martial arts (MMA) promotional juggernaut, sending away former welterweight champion Ben Askren.

Now, they plan on continuing snagging up some of the most recognizable names the sport has to offer. Those plans could include 22-year-old UFC welterweight and lightweight Sage Northcutt. “Super Sage” finished up his UFC contract this past summer in Idaho. He knocked out Zak Ottow in the second round of their Octagon meeting.

Throughout his tenure with the UFC, Northcutt suffered the first two losses of his MMA career. However, once his contract expired, he walked out on a three-fight win streak. While Northcutt could very well end back up in the UFC, he could also get signed by promotions such as Bellator or ONE.

ONE’s Growing Starpower

It looks like ONE may make their push later this week. ONE CEO Chatri Sityodtong announced on his Facebook page that several fighters, including Northcutt, will be in attendance for this Friday’s (November 9, 2018) “ONE: Heart of the Lion” event:

“I am happy to announce that Demetrious Johnson, Eddie Alvarez, Angela Lee, Renzo Gracie, Martin Nguyen, Aung La Nsang, Rich Franklin, Sage Northcutt, and many other superstars will be in attendance to witness ONE: Heart Of The Lion on November 9 in Singapore! LET’S GOOOOO!!! #gratitude”

MMA NYTT reached out to Sityodtong to get a comment on Northcutt specifically attending the show. Here’s what he had to say:

“Sage Northcutt is a tremendously gifted superstar athlete who embodies the values and spirit of authentic martial arts.”

Logan Paul Reacts To Dana White’s “Murder” Comments

The idea of YouTube star Logan Paul fighting in the UFC has been circling MMA news for a few weeks.

Paul sold a reported 800,000 buys for his YouTube pay-per-view (PPV) bout against rapper KSI last month. The bout was a draw. It also got Paul some big-time coverage when UFC names like Sage ‘Northbutt’ started paying attention to him. Northcutt’s Team Alpha Male trainer Urijah Faber also weighed in on the situation.

Paul’s situation and possible UFC debut were compared to that of former WWE wrestler CM Punk. We know how that experiment ended up.

One man with much more say in the matter also weighed in, however. UFC President Dana White recently said his piece regarding Paul fighting in the UFC. In his eyes, credit goes to Paul for getting the PPV sales he did. Fighting in the UFC is another matter altogether:

“That guy would get murdered here,” White said. “He would get hurt badly. If I ever let him fight in the UFC, I should be arrested.

“No hate for the kid. He’s built a great business for himself, great for him, it’s awesome. But trust me, don’t play around here. You will get hurt.”

The YouTube star caught wind of White’s words soon thereafter. Paul reacted on social media by claiming White wasn’t really in it for the safety of the fighters when Punk’s name came up again:

White has drawn a vast amount of critics for his ruthless style that seemingly pays no mind to fighters’ well-being. The polarizing executive has been raked over the coals over and over again for supposedly always booking the fight that makes the most money rather than the most sense.

CM Punk Redone?

Paul was a high school wrestler and has some semblance of boxing experience. That’s hardly the resume of a UFC-level fighter, however. Maybe the UFC has learned their lesson after Punk put on two grossly uninspiring performances in the octagon.

White praised Punk’s dedication and guile to put his reputation on the line via MMAJunkie:

“Everybody always talks about CM Punk. CM Punk is one of the greatest guys you could ever meet,” White said. “He’s a super good guy, he’s very passionate about the sport, and he put his reputation and everything on the line to come fight here, and I respect him for it. Obviously it didn’t work out for him, but he’s got a lot of heart and a lot of balls to do that.”

That could seem somewhat contradictory based on what White said about Paul’s chances in the UFC. Perhaps he’s just done with these kinds of freak shows for now. For White to pass on an easy opportunity to make big money, he’d have to be.

Either way, it seems Paul won’t be making his octagon debut anytime soon.

Sage Northcutt Willing To Fight YouTube Star In “Boxing Or MMA”

Could this fight actually happen?

Sage Northcutt is serious about fighting YouTube star Logan Paul.

The UFC welterweight and lightweight competitor engaged in a Twitter exchange with Paul recently. Paul hosted a self-funded boxing event on YouTube opposite KSI.

Paul and KSI boxed in the main event to a majority draw. A rematch has been discussed for next year. In the meantime, Paul is capitalizing off the publicity and is interested in fighting in the UFC. He has a high school wrestling background that he believes would serve him well in the Octagon. Paul Tweeted out recently that he’s “excited” about potentially securing a UFC fight.

Despite several responses, Northcutt’s stood out the most because of the fight offer in place. The Texan suggested he’d be interested in fighting Paul inside the cage due to his growing starpower. Paul accepted the challenge and jokingly called him Sage “Northbutt.”

Northcutt was on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show recently to discuss his confrontation with Paul on Twitter. He admits that he’s open to fighting the YouTube star in either boxing or MMA (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“Any fighter fighting in the UFC would take the opportunity to take a fight against a YouTuber and stand to make several million dollars.

“I’m not too big for him. I definitely don’t outweigh him. It would be a lot of fun. Either [boxing or MMA] is good for the sport. I know Logan Paul just had a boxing fight.

“It takes a lot of courage just to step in a ring and do that. I think it’s a great opportunity for both of us.”

Faber Weighs In

UFC Hall of Famer and Northcutt’s coach, Urijah Faber, commented on the matter. He actually spoke to Paul about fighting Northcutt. The YouTube star is apparently game, presumably due to the cash involved:

“I asked, ‘Are you serious about fighting Sage?’ He is not opposed to it.

“He does have a wrestling background and is doing some boxing now. He’s a big, strong guy. I think there is some potential there.

”The truth is, everybody wants to put Sage up against wrestlers. Logan Paul is a bigger guy than him, and he’s a wrestler. There’s some intrigue there. Never say never.”

Sage Northcutt Reportedly Exploring Free Agent Options

Northcutt has made his intentions clear.

The post Sage Northcutt Reportedly Exploring Free Agent Options appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Sage Northcutt is exploring his options as a free agent now that his contract with the UFC has expired.

Last Outing

As seen in the co-main event of UFC Boise (also known as UFC Fight Night 133) at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, the rising prospect was able to secure a TKO win over over the always-tough Zak Ottow.

This fight didn’t go as originally planned for Northcutt as he had a tough first round. He got floored with a punch early in the fight and absorbed shots from top position. However, he was able to rebound and get his hand raised.

Northcutt bulked up for this fight as it was contested at welterweight, which is not his normal weight class even though he’s fought at 170 pounds a few times. After the fight, he made it known that he would entertain the idea of fighting at middleweight.

In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Northcutt noted that his last fight was the final bout on his current UFC contract.

Exploring His Options

Now, he’s headed towards free agents with his options of staying with the UFC or signing with other promotions. Those other promotions include Bellator MMA, One FC, and PFL just to name a few.

“For the UFC to re-sign me, I think that would be something that’s great,” he said (H/T to MMA Mania). “I don’t see why they wouldn’t try to offer something, so I’m just waiting to find out. But, I think me being young—I’ve only had one year total of actual MMA training if you look at it. So I consider my MMA training started the day I stepped foot in Urijah Faber’s gym.

”I am a free agent, yes sir,” Northcutt said. “I’m not sure how it works, what my contract says or anything, but yes I am a free agent now. I know that going to other leagues like Bellator or ONE FC.  That guys or friends of mine, for example Rory MacDonald, people that fought for the UFC like Machida. They’re making double if not triple what they were making fighting for the UFC.”

”I don’t want to say underpaid,” he said. “The UFC and the sport of MMA, it’s not about just talent, which I wish it was. The hard work, the grind, the energy that you put into it and how you perform out there. It’s not just about that and you could be a top ten guy. Maybe fans don’t tune in and watch some of the top ten guys.Because they haven’t even heard the guy’s name.”
