McGregor’s BJJ Training Partner Believes Sage Northcutt Would Be An ‘Easy Fight’

Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) stalwart Dillon Danis is no stranger to headlines. Danis has had his share of media attention despite not stepping foot inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Octagon. If you didn’t know him for his championship wins in Abu Dhabi, World No Gi, and Pan American, then you knew him when current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor enlisted his services for UFC 202.

Danis raised some eyebrows when he told Ariel Helwani he’d be willing to fight Nate Diaz in mixed martial arts (MMA) back in August. You can see the interview from that edition of The MMA Hour above.

It’s no secret that Danis is confident in his abilities. The BJJ black belt has his sights set on the UFC despite not having an MMA bout on his resume. He visited Helwani once again (via MMAFighting) to discuss his future plans and potential opponents. One name that stuck out to him was Sage Northcutt.

“That would be an easy fight (against Northcutt). Just to get in there. That would be a good, easy one to just get out of the way. Beat someone that has a decent name.”

Northcutt has been under the microscope following his submission loss to Mickey Gall at UFC on FOX 22. He’s lost two of his last three bouts, and his win at UFC 200 against Enrique Marin was anything but “Super.” With both his losses coming by submission, it’s hard to imagine his next bout will be against a BJJ master.

While the BJJ skills of Danis can’t be denied, many questions loom. Fans and analysts wonder if he can grasp the stand-up, wrestling, fight IQ, and many other aspects of professional MMA. One thing that Danis has going for him is time. He’s only 23 and trains with the No. 2 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Danis likes his chances and says he can make an impact immediately.

“I honestly think I can go my first fight in the UFC, and I think I would dominate. I say that 100 percent being fact. I’m not a stupid person and I know what I’m capable of. I know who I’ve trained with, and I know what I’ve seen.”

Dillon Danis has gained fame due to the fact that he has helped train UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, but he also happens to be one of the most decorated jiu-jitsu players in the world. While his success in BJJ speaks for itself, Danis has showed some signs indicating that he could potentially make the jump over to mixed martial arts (MMA) at some point.

The Brazilian has received an offer to compete at a Cage Fury Fighting Championship event next year, but he recently told MMAFighting.com that he plans on going right to the big leagues:

“I honestly think I can go my first fight in the UFC, and I think I would dominate,” Danis said. “I say that 100 percent being fact. I’m not a stupid person and I know what I’m capable of. I know who I’ve trained with, and I know what I’ve seen.”

If he were to get a chance in the UFC, Danis also has a name on his mind, as he feels as if a bout with rising prospect Sage Northcutt would be an ‘easy’ fight:

“That would be an easy fight,” Danis said. “Just to get in there. That would be a good, easy one to just get out of the way. Beat someone that has a decent name.”

In addition to Northcutt, Danis, 23-years-old, has also exchanged words with McGregor’s rival Nate Diaz, specifically after Diaz and McGregor fought for a second time at UFC 202 last August. Danis has said that he’d fight Diaz and according to the Brazilian, the fact that Diaz is a highly experienced veteran ‘means nothing’:

“That means nothing,” Danis said. “It doesn’t mean anything. I’ve always respected Nate. I think Nate is an awesome fighter. But when he called me out, that’s when we have a problem.”

As far as what weight he would compete at, Danis took a page out of McGregor’s book when he implied that it simply wouldn’t make a difference:

“I can dominate any weight class,” Danis said.

Fallout: Hype Train Destruction Of Vanzant, Northcutt, And Perry

Michelle Waterson, Alan Jouban and Mickey Gall all had something in common last Saturday night. Each of them in their own way were responsible for shutting down some major hype trains. Waterson, Jouban, and Gall each had the responsibility of battling fighters who have considerable upside. That’s not to say that Paige Vanzant, Mike Perry, and Sage Northcutt don’t have a future. In fact, if nothing else the losses these three sustained were absolutely necessary for their career advancement.

For Sage Northcutt the message was simple: stay at 155 lbs. Sure, Mickey Gall called out the young talent, but it wasn’t reason enough to fight the New Jersey native. It was a high risk, moderate reward situation that forced Northcutt to fight at a weight class that he hasn’t done very well in this far. Sage Northcutt’s handlers should have looked at the bigger picture and understood that having the twenty year old build slowly in the right division is going to be the key to the young man’s success. That and the fact that his ground game, take down and grappling defense included, needs a ton of work if he’s still hoping to be the UFC’s youngest champion.

In Mike Perry’s case he had to learn the hard way that talking trash does little in the way of winning fights. The reality is that Perry’s aggressive come forward style has the potential to be exciting but will ultimately become a double edged sword. At this point of the game you coming forward, tucking your chin, and throwing bombs does not an elite fighter make. Perry had flashes of success but his inability to adapt and change his game plan proved to be his undoing. Jouban showed that he was willing to make improvements in his own game in between camps and during the fight itself. If Perry hopes to become elite then he’ll have to be willing to change his approach and avoid his usual emotional style in order to elevate his game. If he’s able to reign in his ego, Perry truly can become a force in the UFC.

The third humble pie recipient was Paige Vanzant who has little time to show any improvements in her game outside of her footwork. Vanzant had great movement while the fight lasted on the feet, but it still was done with little purpose with no set ups for potential angles. Waterson herself showed just how dangerous she has become since her last fight inside the octagon. The head and arm throw which so rarely works in MMA was performed with such technique and power it showcased just how advanced Waterson’s game is becoming. While Vanzant will once again be forced to reevaluate, Waterson will see her star rise as her rear naked choke victory sets her up as another potential challenger for the strawweight strap.

What were your takeaways from UFC on Fox 22?

Rising UFC star “Super” Sage Northcutt suffered his second Octagon loss in the co-main event of this past weekend’s (Dec. 17, 2016) UFC on FOX 22 from Sacramento, California, getting submitted by fellow rising star Mickey Gall. Not only have both of Northcutt’s UFC losses come by way of submission, but they have both come at 170-pounds as well.

With that being said, “Super” Sage announced via his official Twitter account that he would be dropping back down to his ‘real’ weight at lightweight:

Northcutt is currently 3-2 in the UFC and all three of those victories have come at 155-pounds. He opened up his Octagon career with back-to-back stoppages over Francisco Trevino and Cody Pfister. He then scored a unanimous decision victory over Enrique Marin at July 9’s UFC 200 prior to being stopped by Gall.

Who would you like to see “Super” Sage attempt to bounce back against next?
