Kicking off the UFC on FOX 18 main card from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey was a welterweight clash between Bryan Barberena and Sage Northcutt. It’s Sage’s 170-pound debut, and he looks even more freakishly huge than usual. Interesting take on the first fight of the evening’s main card, as the hype seems a little toned down, maybe it’s just me.

Round 1: After some feeling out Sage shoots for the takedown but gets stuffed, they take the centre of the octagon and trade kicks, Northcutt wings a kick, hits air, but he drops Barberena with a nice straight right. They clinch again, BB in charge against the fence, but Sage lands a deep double and takes the back but Barberena escapes. More clinching and Sage lands two punches on the break. He drops BB as he rushes in, but he’s not that hurt. Barberena cut on the forehead.

‘Bam Bam’ getting controlled now in the head fighting, nice knee to the gut by Northcutt. Takedown stuffed and now one scored by Barberena. Sage on his back but he kicks out and they trade. Sage rocked with a very nice right hand to the eye, and they swing for the fences. Close round, with the takedown it’s anyone’s.

Round 2: Sage moving on his toes, Joe Rogan says he noticed Northcutt looks a little tired, Sage misses a kick and ‘Bam Bam’ takes him down. Nice GnP from Barberena, elbows to the head and Northcutt throws up his guard but just keeps eating elbows. BB to half guard, nearly in side control here, this is not where Sage wants to be.

Big elbow hurts Northcutt now as he’s been down for a while, another stern elbow to the chops and Sage looks a little lost here. BB goes for the arm triangle, and it’s over! Northcutt taps to Barberena who took the fight on just weeks notice!

WOW! First round submission fr Bryan Barberena!

While some have reacted negatively to the fact that 19-year-old UFC newcomer Sage Northcutt is already earning $40,000 show and $40,000 win purses in his first two fights inside the Octagon, the rookie sensation is quick to point out his value to the promotion.

Northcutt spoke about the reaction to his UFC pay during a recent interview with the folks at MMAJunkie.com.

“I want everyone in the UFC to make as much money as they can. I want the best and the most money everyone can make in the UFC. I think and I believe that I bring something different to the table — something that makes people want to tune in and watch. (Fighters need to bring) something that’s of value to the UFC. I think that’s really important with the UFC, and people can see that with me.”

The well-paid UFC newcomer will make his Octagon return at UFC On FOX 18 on January 31st, where as recently reported, he will be fighting Bryan Barbarena in a 170-pound fight instead of competing against Andrew Holbrook in a 155-pound fight as originally scheduled.

19 year old fighting phenom “Super” Sage Northcutt has taken the UFC by storm, compiling two straight stoppage wins, one being a 57 second demolition of Francisco Trevino, since entering the promotion last October.

Northcutt was scheduled to make his third Octagon appearance against Andrew Holbrook at this weekend’s (January 30, 2016) UFC on FOX 18 from Newark, New Jersey. After Holbrook suffered an injury, however, it was announced that Northcutt would be moving up to welterweight to take on late replacement Bryan Barberena.

Despite having already started his cut down to 155-pounds, “Super” Sage admits that he feels even more super fighting at welterweight:

“I found out that my opponent that I was going to fight broke his foot, and that was at 155,” Northcutt told MMAjunkie.com. “So now the new opponent that got arranged for me is at 170, welterweight. I had actually cut back the amount of food I was eating. I was already getting close to my weight of fighting at 155, and now I feel great.

“I feel super strong. I feel like a super human getting to eat all this food and going back to welterweight at the last minute.”

Not only does he feel healthy and ready to go for this fight in particular, but Northcutt also touched on a possible future at 170 pounds:

“There is a chance that I might fight another fight at 170 or two more fights and go back to 155,” Northcutt said. “I’m not really sure yet exactly what the plan is, but it’s very possible I’ll have more fights and stay here at 170 and very possible I’ll go back to 155 in the future.”

Will “Super” Sage be able to keep the train rolling this weekend at the Prudential Center?

Things heated up on social media this weekend as #10th ranked fighter Al Iaquinta took a shot at UFC’s top prospect and chosen one Sage Northcutt. Iaquinta, who is snowed in up in the northeast, posted a video that reminded him of Northcutt and how peppy he is during his interviews. Check it out here:

“What goes through my head every time I hear the fucking Sage Northcutt speak.”

“Message I got from the fucking Sage Northcutt after I roasted him last tweet and shoved him in a locker.”

Iaquinta responded to a fan on Twitter and said that the UFC would never have him fight Northcutt and implied that he would beat Northcutt if given the opportunity.

“@MirkoCrosby relax its a joke…. They would never feed him to me lol.”

Iaquinta has been out of action since June of 2015 after suffering a knee injury. To be more exact, Iaquinta had very little cartilage left in his injured knee. Doctors transferred cartilage from a cadaver to Iaquinta’s leg, behind his knee cap. He was expected to be out action for six to eight months, so he should be ready to return to action soon.

On the other hand, Northcutt will be fighting Bryan Barberena at UFC on FOX 18.

It’s possible that if the UFC wanted to book this fight between the two they could. Do you want to see this fight? Let us know.
