On the strength of a two-fight win streak, rising UFC welterweight Mike “Platinum” Perry will attempt to bulldoze his way onto the official UFC rankings by defeating No. 10-ranked Santiago Ponzinibbio on the main card of this Saturday’s (December 16, 2017) UFC on FOX 26 from the Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg, Canada.

One of the most colorful personalities in MMA throughout 2017, “Platinum” will face by far his biggest test in the Brazilian “Gente Boa,” but that didn’t stop Perry from predicting a vicious first-round knockout while speaking to MMA Junkie in Winnipeg today:

“I’m going to stand in the middle of the octagon, and he’s going to bounce around and move and try to find that range,” Perry said. “I’m going to time that range, and he’s going to come in, and I’m not going to move. I’m going to slip out of the way and catch him with the counter, and I’m going to knock him out, unconscious, in the first round – guaranteed.

Perry continued to blast his upcoming foe by berating Ponzinibbio’s fighting style, fixating on Gunnar Nelson’s suggestion that he had poked him in the eye during their recent match-up. “Platinum” had little respect for Ponzinibbio’s punches, adding that if he tried to poke him in the eye and errantly put his finger in his mouth instead, he may bite it off:

“He likes to throw punches like a middle school girl,” Perry said. “He likes to open his fingers. I don’t know if he’s trying to palm at the hands. I’ve seen some videos where he was literally trying to stick his fingers in people’s eye. He also does this one, too, where he sticks the knuckle if he can land it in your eye.

“I like that. Come with it. If your finger goes in my mouth, it might get bit off.”

Perry even went as far as to have his teammates poke him in the eye to get a feel for potential actions while training for the fight:

“I was like, ‘No, keep going, that’s good. It didn’t stop me or phase me for one second. This is what I do. I live for the pain.”

Streaking UFC welterweight contender Mike Perry is enjoying a boost of momentum thanks to two impressive knockouts over Jake Ellenberger and Alex Reyes in 2017, wins that have earned him a pivotal showdown with fellow knockout artist Santiago Ponzinibbio at December 16’s UFC on FOX 26.

But ‘Platinum’ has also ground the proverbial promotional ax himself, and his highly-publicized efforts include showing up to October 21’s UFC Gdansk to get in the face of main event winner and fellow welterweight riser Darren Till.

Now, ‘Platinum’ is back with his own sort of shall we say, ‘unique’ video he posted on Instagram for Halloween today (Tues., October 31, 2017), where he smashed several pumpkins with various Muay Thai techniques while debuting a cringe-worthy rap beginning with the words. ‘I’m ghoulish, you foolish – to accept a fight with me.’

In a week full of all-out hype and buzz surrounding Conor McGregr’s anticipated boxing match with Floyd Mayweather, Sunday’s (July 16, 2017) UFC Fight Night 113 from the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland, got lost amidst a sea of promotional overload when it aired two days after the exhausting world tour ended.

That lead to some dismal ratings for the Europe-based card, as MMA Fighting’s Dave Meltzer reported that UFC Fight Night Glasgow averaged a paltry 402,000 viewers throughout its 3:00-6:00 p.m EST afternoon slot, a number that ranked significantly lower than the most recent afternoon card on foreign soil, May 28’s UFC Fight Night 109 from Stockholm, Sweden which did 496,000 viewers.

That card went head-to-head with the Indianapolis 500 over Memorial Day weekend in the United States, with top-ranked light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson outlasting Glover Teixeira over the course of a brutal, scintillating five-round affair. The Glasgow event featured Gunnar Nelson vs. Santiago Ponzinibbio in the featured fight, a bout that was solid enough but brought little casual name recognition. Meltzer stated that the fact the UFC Fight Night 109 headliner lasted into fifth allowed it to build an audience compared to Ponznibbio’s shocking 82-second knockout of Nelson.

Per Haljestam for USA TODAY Sports

The prelims for UFC Fight Night Glasgow featuring the retirement bout of longtime Scottish veteran Neil Seery, did 284,000 viewers compared to 353,000 for the preliminaries at UFC Fight Night 109.

As noted, UFC Fight Night Glasgow suffered from being an otherwise less-than-ballyhooed card in the days directly following the circus – or “s**show,” as Dana White dubbed it – that was the Mayweather vs. McGregor world tour, in addition to be ing in an odd time slot on Sunday afternoon.

While the UFC obviously has a huge payday coming (in conjunction with SHOWTIME) in Mayweather vs. McGregor on August 26, their own ratings have definitely been in the swamp this year. July 8’s UFC 213 preliminary card did the lowest ratings since 2014, a number that certainly effected by the pay-per-view (PPV) card losing its main event incredibly late in the game due to Amanda Nunes becoming ill and pulling out of her fight against Valentina Shevchenko.

Those numbers simply don’t bode well for the WME-IMG promotion, which has seen a disturbing turnaround in PPV sales and obviously overall ratings after several buy records were set during a blockbuster 2016 slate. It’s safe to say that a card airing from Scotland on a Sunday afternoon not involving any major stars is not the clearest reason or cause for concern, but at some point in 2017, the promotion has to start picking up some sort of momentum in 2017.

That should start with July 29’s packed UFC 214 from Anaheim, California, a stacked event featuring three title fights, the main of which being the anticipated Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones light heavyweight title rematch. If that doesn’t get some ratings numbers rising, it could be hard to imagine what will.

It was a rough weekend for No. 8-ranked UFC welterweight Gunnar Nelson this past weekend (Sun. July 16, 2017).

Nelson had a two-fight win streak snapped when he suffered a hellacious first round knockout loss to No. 14-ranked Santiago Ponzinibbio in the main event of UFC Fight Night Glasgow. The win marked Ponzinibbio’s fifth consecutive victory inside the Octagon; however, it came with a bit of controversy.

Following the fight, Nelson complained an eye poke from his counterpart that led to the vicious knockout, and upon review of the replay, four clean eye pokes can clearly be seen. Two pokes in each eye can be counted, in addition to a double poke as Ponzinibbio’s extended fingers can be seen making their way into Nelson’s eye sockets as they each have their arms extended in an exchange.

Per a report from MMA Plus UK, Nelson and his team are planning to appeal the knockout loss as a result of the pokes. The Argentine’s extended fingers were a direct violation of the Association Of Boxing Commissions’ (ABC) new Unified Rules of mixed martial arts (MMA):

“In the standing position, a fighter that moves their arm(s) toward their opponent with an open hand, fingers pointing at the opponent’s face/eyes, will be a foul. Referees are to prevent this dangerous behavior by communicating clearly to fighters. Fighters are directed to close their fists or point their fingers straight in the air when reaching toward their opponent.”
