UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley finally has a new opponent for his upcoming main card bout at UFC 264, and fellow bantamweight Ricky Simon is not happy that he was passed up for the short-notice fight.
O’Malley was originally supposed to fight Louis Smolka at UFC 264 before Smolka had to withdraw from the bout due to an undisclosed injury. Just hours after the news broke, a plethora of UFC fighters put their names in the hat to fight against O’Malley, one of UFC’s biggest rising stars.
Simon was one of the first who made his voice heard in regards to his interest to fight O’Malley. According to O’Malley, the two sides agreed to the bout but Simon allegedly declined to fight him because he didn’t want to cut all the way down to 135 pounds on two weeks notice.
Shortly after O’Malley was paired up with Kris Moutinho for the upcoming pay-per-view, Simon expressed his frustration over the matter.
“Smart move, control the narrative,” Simon tweeted. “Pretend to accept so it doesn’t look as bad when you get a lesser opponent. I’ve been tested, I’ll be around.”
A fight between O’Malley and Simon would’ve been highly entertaining due to Simon’s name value as a veteran in the bantamweight division, and O’Malley rising stock in the UFC. Ultimately, the promotion opted to go with with Moutinho, who will make his UFC debut after fighting in smaller promotions such as CES and CFFC.
O’Malley is coming off of his win over Thomas Almeida earlier this year at UFC 260. Before that, he had suffered his first loss in the UFC to Marlon Vera after winning his first four bouts on the sport’s biggest stage.
Simon has won three in a row in the UFC’s bantamweight and featherweight divisions, the latest coming against Brian Kelleher in a featherweight bout at UFC 258.
Do you think a fight between Sean O’Malley and Ricky Simon would’ve been an entertaining fight?

UFC 264 will take place on July 10th, 2021 headlined by the lightweight trilogy between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Accompanying them on this pay-per-view card is UFC rising star turned mainstay Sean O’Malley.
O’Malley was scheduled to face Luis Smolka, who has amassed a 3-2 UFC record with all three wins coming via stoppage, but was forced withdraw from the bout due to an undisclosed injury.
With this short notice opportunity to face one of the sport’s biggest stars came plenty of bids from a number of fighters. The only bid that turned into a buy was newcomer Kris Moutinho‘s, who will now face O’Malley on short notice via one of the biggest pay-per-view cards of the year.
O’Malley will welcome Moutinho to the UFC, who is 9-4 professionally and has won his last two bouts with the CFFC. Not only is this a short notice opportunity of a few weeks, but Moutinho just fought on May 28th, so this will mark one of his quickest professional turnarounds.
As for O’Malley, he has gained traction across the macro of the sport and at just 26 years of age, he looks to be apart of the UFC’s plans at bantamweight for the foreseeable future. He suffered his first professional loss against Marlon Vera at UFC 252, but answered with a knockout win over Thomas Almeida at UFC 260.
With just a few weeks to prepare, does Kris Moutinho have a live chance to halt the metaphorical train that is Sean O’Malley?

UFC bantamweight Sean O’Malley is searching for a new opponent for the upcoming UFC 264 card after his original opponent Louis Smolka had to pull out due to an injury. After the news broke; flyweight contender Tim Elliott and fellow bantamweight Ricky Simon were among those who threw their names in the hat for a fight with the rising star.
ESPN’s Ariel Helwani was the first to break the news that Smolka had to pull out of the upcoming July main card fight with O’Malley. Specifics on the injury weren’t revealed, but it was apparently severe enough that Smolka had to withdraw from the fight with just weeks to go from fight night.
UFC flyweight contender Tim Elliott was among the first to express his interest to fight on short notice against O’Malley on social media.
“I’ll take that! My opponent was injured!” Elliott tweeted.
Elliott was originally slated to fight Su Mudaerji at UFC Vegas 30 this past weekend before the fight was called off at the last minute. He is coming off of back-to-back wins over Ryan Benoit and Jordan Espinosa and is back in the thick of things in the flyweight title conversation.
Elliott wasn’t the only one who seemed ecstatic about a potential O’Malley fight, as Simon called for a matchup against his UFC bantamweight colleague.
“Less than 2 weeks? I accept,” Simon posted in a tweet.
Simon has won three straight including his recent featherweight debut win over Brian Kelleher at UFC 258. Before that, he had recorded back-to-back wins over tough bantamweight opponents Ray Borg and Gaetano Pirrello. Other names who called for a fight on social media with O’Malley include Merab Dvalishvili and Cody Stamann.
It’s a bit of a good news/bad news situation when it comes to O’Malley and the upcoming UFC 264 pay-per-view. The bad news is he’s currently without a fight, but the good news is there are a plethora of fighters willing to step in on weeks’ notice and fight one of the rising stars in the UFC.
