Sean O’Malley is still looking for an opponent for UFC 258 after Thomas Almedia has turned down the chance to fight him on February 13.

The popular bantamweight prospect took to social media to confirm the date of his return in November but stopped short of announcing an opponent for his eagerly anticipated comeback. According to O’Malley, Almedia was supposed to be his opponent for UFC 258 but the Brazilian has now passed up the chance.

“I just got done training in my own garage, in my own cage this morning. It was fun,” O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “I was supposed to be fighting February 13 against da-da-da. I didn’t say it because I didn’t know. But I got offered Thomas Almeida. He said my left hand was to powerful. Or no, he said my right hand was to powerful or something along those lines of Covid or something.”

O’Malley insisted that Almeida was always supposed to be his UFC 258 opponent and he didn’t announce it because it wasn’t official. Now he and his team are on the lookout for another bantamweight willing to take the fight.

“So he turned the fight down. A good decision on his part as it would have been a nasty KO. So we are still looking. But that’s who I was planning on fighting. I never announced it because obviously it was never official. And it is not official, and it’s not going to be official. So that fight is not happening. Still looking. I plan on fighting in February.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

O’Malley is coming off the first loss of professional career. ‘Suga’ made a considerable step up to face Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 252 in August. On the night, things went horribly wrong for the highly touted prospect who suffered a first-round TKO loss. A few minutes into the fight O’Malley was caught with a leg kick to his right leg. From then on he dealt with some real notable difficulties laterally moving around the Octagon and shifting his weight. Following an engagement before the culmination of the round, O’Malley fell to the canvas. Assuming stacked guard, Vera unleashed a left hook, followed by a massive elbow – with referee Herb Dean separating the two.

Almedia returned from more than two years out of the Octagon to face Jonathan Martinez at UFC Fight Island 6. He was easily outpointed by his opponent over three rounds in what proved to be his third consecutive loss. Almedia was once highly touted but now has four defeats from his last five fights and is without a win since 2016.

UFC bantamweight prospect Sean O’Malley has followed up his first professional MMA loss to Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 252 with another defeat – this time at a jiu-jitsu tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.

Robert Degle met O’Malley in the finals of the tournament and managed to catch ‘Suga’ in a heel hook to take first prize. Post-match the John Danaher brown belt took to social media to praise O’Malley for his willingness to keep developing as a martial artist despite being so established in the MMA world, he wrote.

“Had a great opportunity to compete against the rising UFC star @sugaseanmma in a @grapplingindustries event here in Phoenix, Arizona. For Sean to compete in such an event demonstrates a very respectable desire to grow as a martial artist. Realistically he had nothing practical to gain by doing this event. The man has over a million followers and is surely making bank in MMA. So why do the event? We spoke afterwards and he explained that he simply loved JuJitsu. I hope the experience of competing against me helps push him to further development as a martial artist. I was a fan before but an even bigger one now.”

Despite retiring in May of this year, Henry Cejudo has had no problem continuing to make headlines. He enjoys trolling fighters, especially fighters in his weight class of 135 lbs, and Sean O’Malley is the most recent of which he’s targeted.

‘Triple-C’ recently went onto Mike Swick’s podcast to discuss some things, one of which was ‘Sugar’ Sean O’Malley. Swick asked the former Olympian what his thoughts on the 25-year-old talent were:

“I’ll be honest with you Mike, I actually like the kid. In some way I’m like hating on him, but in some way I like him, I’m weird like that. But I honestly, I wish the kid the best, but I also think that he thinks he’s better than what he really is. You know what I’m saying?

“He has, even though he has the gifts, he’s got great distance, he’s got great demeanor, great fakes man. I watch of his, I’m like, very subtle. I look at all these minor little details. But, he hasn’t been built to freaking last, he hasn’t been through a war where somebody, you can give the pain, but can you take the pain?

“And that’s the difference between somebody like Sean O’Malley and me. Yeah does he have probably better striking than me? Probably, because of his length and his range and whatnot, it makes him a little dangerous, but you just gotta be the full package. You know what I’m saying?

“And it’s ironic that you didn’t have (Marlon) ‘Chito’ Vera on your thing, and right before he fought Sean O’Malley, I’m like ‘hey listen dude’, I sent him a message and we’re not even friends man, but we have a lot of friends in common. I’m like, ‘listen man, the way to beat this dude, make him fight his B-side.

“Put him in the clinch, put him against the cage, and because of his stance, he’s heavy with his left leg forward.’ I said, ‘smoke the hands, and take out the fucking kicks.

“Smoke the hands and just blasting that front kick, that calf kick, ’cause it’s been taking everybody out.’ And it’s happened to me with Demetrious (Johnson), this is why I kind of went from the karate stance to a little more neutral because people were catching onto it a little bit too much.”

Cejudo went on to say: “He (Vera) answered me right away. He’s like, ‘man that’s good to hear from you champ, that means a lot to me.’

“So I didn’t give him the gameplan, ’cause I think they already had that down, but I kinda, when somebody’s able to tell you, convey to you, it just assures it to you so much better when you fight. But you gotta have it here (points to head) when you fight.”

It’s great to see Cejudo still keeping up with the sport today in his retirement. It’s too bad he left, he retired too soon, leaving us all wanting more. He also stated that he’s 33-years-old, in the prime of his career, but he’s also satisfied with everything he’s done.

His accomplishments include an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling, a gold medal in the Pan American Games, three gold medals in the Pan American Championships, a bronze medal in the Wrestling World Cup, and a UFC champion at 125 lbs and 135 lbs, both titles of which he vacated, and both of which he defended once.

However, there is one fight that would bring him back to MMA, and this won’t come as a surprise because we’ve all heard him talk about it, a title shot against UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski.

He also expressed interest in a modified rules boxing bout with the 20-0 multiple-time boxing champion Ryan Garcia, who’s also a 15-time amateur champion in the sport with a 215-15 record.

Who knows, maybe we’ll end up seeing him versus Sean O’Malley down the line. Cejudo only left a few months ago and he’s on top of his game, and O’Malley will continue getting better for at least five years to come.

Ben Askren Tells Sean O’Malley To ‘Toughen Up’ Post-Surgery

Ben Askren got his hip replacement surgery done earlier today, and he had some choice words for Sean O’Malley, regarding him being carried out of the cage on a stretcher at UFC 252. “See, Sean O’Malley’s faking an ankle injury. Ben Askren got his hip replacement surgery done earlier today, and he had some choice words for Sean O’Malley, regarding him being carried out of the cage on a stretcher at UFC 252.

“See, Sean O’Malley’s faking an ankle injury. (He) needed a fucking stretcher. I’m like four hours post-op from the hip, Lisa’s got me walking already. Sean, toughen up a little bit son.” – Ben Askren via Twitter

This is just the thing Askren would do. He’s one of the best fighters, or retired fighters, at trolling other fighters online. Once O’Malley was kicked on his knee in his fight with Marlon Vera, his leg went dead, and he ended up spraining his ankle as the fight went on.

The former multiple-time Bellator and ONE Championship Welterweight Champion doesn’t believe that’s enough of an excuse to not be able to walk out of the octagon.

It’s great to see that Askren finally got his hip replaced, he’s needed do get that done for some time now. That’s the main reason he retired back in 2017, and in 2019. It’d be pretty cool to see him return, he didn’t leave on the best note. He’s better than he was able to show us in the year he was with the UFC.

As for O’Malley, hopefully he has a quick recovery process and can get back inside the cage soon. He was looking great early on in his fight with Vera, up until his leg gave out. He was landing some vicious leg kicks of his own, and he was on point until he couldn’t put weight on his right leg.

O’Malley is still only 25 years of age, he’ll continue growing and getting better for years to come. Every performance he has, you can tell he’s just put that much more time in the gym. He has as much potential as anyone we’ve ever seen in this sport.
