Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate believes Sean O’Malley has all the makings of a superstar and with good reason.

O’Malley continues to rise in popularity as well as the rankings ahead of his bantamweight co-main event meeting with Marlon Vera at UFC 252 this Saturday.

Vera is undoubtedly the toughest fighter he will have faced in his career. With “Sugar” predicting another knockout victory, he will certainly have more believers and shut the doubters up further if he continues at this rate.

And for Tate, O’Malley is a perfect representation of the evolution of the sport.

“He’s one of those guys — he’s the next generation,” Tate said on Fight Nation. “He’s putting more into it than just ‘train harder not smarter.’ That was the old school way to do it. Everybody just trained and fought every day. You see the evolution of the sport continue to grow and I think that Sean O’Malley is that next step.

“He’s the next level. He’s figuring it out. He’s meditating, he’s probably doing yoga, doing all these extra things that are just helping him be a complete person and a complete different kind of fighter.”

Why Is O’Malley So Popular?

Despite it being just his fifth fight in the UFC, O’Malley has already been given a co-main event spot in what is one of the biggest cards of the year.

It’s a testament to just how popular he has become since debuting for the promotion in 2017. But what is the reason for his popularity? The knockouts and undefeated record certainly help, but Tate believes there are other factors.

“I just think he’s unique,” Tate explained. “He has a refreshing fighting style. He fights with careless abandonment, yet he’s calculated and he has a system to the madness. But he’s unpredictable and he’s fun and he can knock people out and he has great interviews and he stands out. I mean, his hair, his tattoos, his personality — he just feels like somebody you want to be invested in. Right? Somebody you want to care about. And people do.

“And he’s fun and he’s exhilarating, and he’s all the things that you would want in a potential star. I think that’s what we see in the making here, that’s what makes him so interesting,” Miesha Tate concluded. “I’d like to see him continue to climb the rankings. Especially if he goes 6-0 which is not an easy thing to do in the UFC at all. He’s undefeated, 12-0 and people love him. He’s got a catchy name, he’s got a refreshing fun style of fighting. He’s just a fun fighter to watch.”

‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley is hoping to one day secure a “dream fight” against former dual weight UFC champion Conor McGregor.

The surging bantamweight prospect is due to face Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera in the co-main event of UFC 252 this Saturday (August 15). Despite having his toughest test to date in ahead of him O’Malley is already looking to the future and wants to emulate the careers of McGregor and UFC middleweight champ, Israel Adesanya.

“I think obviously Conor’s career went well, Israel Adesanya’s career went well, and I feel like I want a similar career like that,” O’Malley told reporters, including LowKickMMA, during Wednesday’s UFC 252 virtual media day. “(Conor and I are) pretty similar in fighting styles. We knock people out in the first round. We’re not afraid to say how the fight will play out.”

While O’Malley clearly has immense respect for McGregor and all that the Irishman has achieved the 25-year-old still hopes to fight against him one day.

“Probably Conor. I think fans would like that,” O’Malley said when asked what fight he’d like regardless of division. “I think that’s an exciting fight. That’s a fight that I feel like I could win. It’s not just like a ‘there’s not a chance,’ I feel like that’s a fight I could win. It’s a fight that would probably be a dream fight.

“I’m lighter, he’s heavier. I’m way faster than him. He hits hard, I’m good at not getting hit. It’d be interesting.” (Transcribed by Bloody Elbow)

McGregor has spent the majority of his UFC career at 145lbs but he is very unlikely to make the featherweight limit again. ‘Notorious’ last fought at welterweight against Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone. He is currently “retired” from the sport after becoming frustrated with the lack of fights available to him.

Sean O’Malley Thinks He’ll Knock Out Marlon Vera In One Round

‘Suga’ Sean O’Malley has predicted he will become the first man to finish Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera at UFC 252 which takes place on August 15 in Las Vegas. The popular bantamweight prospect is in the toughest fight of his life against Vera and that is something he recognizes.

Speaking to Just Scrap Radio on BJPENN.com O’Malley noted his UFC 252 opponent poses a serious threat, he said.

“He is a dangerous opponent and a really good black belt in jiu-jitsu has some TKO wins. A bunch of stoppages and has never been finished so that will be sweet for me to finish him for the first time. It is in the smaller cage so I was thinking that is a disadvantage. But, the more I think about it will be a disadvantage for him. It doesn’t really matter what we fight in. I don’t see him being able to connect any punches or get ahold of me. It won’t be a fun fight for him.”

O’Malley also realizes Vera is tough but that won’t stop him from scoring a first-round knockout on Saturday night.

“Vera is tough and can take some shots and a lot of the fights I was watching he was taking shots on the side of the head or the top, not the chin,” O’Malley said. “I hit people right on the chin. So, yeah I see another first-round knockout. But, I’ll be ready for 15 minutes. I think this will be a sweet fight for me to get a lot of highlights. I think I will be able to bust him up for a little while.

“If it plays out the way I want it to, I’ll get an early knockout,” he later added.

O’Malley is a strong striker who many believe Vera should try to take down in this fight. However, ‘Suga’ warns he has a serious ground game too it’s just something he hasn’t had the chance to show yet, he said.

“Chito is a black belt and follows jiu-jitsu, he has to assume my jiu-jitsu is decent. Whatever he assumes my jiu-jitsu is, it is better than that. It is a secret weapon. If he takes a shot on me and it is not a good shot and his head isn’t where it is supposed to be he is getting choked 100 percent. If he does take me down, we will see how that plays out. I’m very confident in my wrestling, my jiu-jitsu, I’m very confident to get back up off my back. Anywhere the fight goes I can get a finish.”
