Luke Rockhold is open to the idea of fighting Sean Strickland next.

Rockhold hasn’t fought since being knocked out by Jan Blachowicz in July 2019. The former UFC middleweight champion flirted with the idea of retirement before re-committing himself to MMA.

The 36-year-old has found it tough to get matched up for his comeback fight. Rockhold recently revealed that Jack Hermansson, Khamzat Chimaev, Kevin Holland, and Uriah Hall all refused to fight him for one reason or another.

On Tuesday, Dana White claimed he is trying to make a fight between Rockhold and Sean Strickland, who is fresh of his career-best win over Hall at UFC Vegas 33.

Rockhold told Submission Radio he’s down to fight Strickland.

“I haven’t heard any dates or anything like that, but that is something they’re interested in,” Rockhold said. “And yeah, let’s do it. I mean, he’s not the most… he took a ranking, he did his thing, but he doesn’t help himself in anyway, shape or form with his style and his performance on mics.”

Strickland was previously mentioned as a potential comeback opponent for Rockhold who turned down the fight.

Now that Strickland is ranked in the middleweight top 10 the former champion finds the match-up more interesting.

“They offered me Sean actually a while back and I just wasn’t interested cause he’s just a fucking nobody,” Rockhold said. “It wasn’t the fight I wanted. It didn’t make any sense, no one knew of him, and I didn’t give two fucks about him. And now it’s like Dana’s trying to piss me off with it. And now he’s obviously been out there, he beat Uriah Hall, he looked decent and he took a ranking. So, there’s something to work with I guess now. And everybody else, everybody else is really… they offered it to “They offered me Sean actually a while back, a while back. And I just wasn’t interested cause he’s just a fucking nobody. I liked that too, that was exciting. That kind of got me up. I don’t know, this is what we have, and there were some other fights they kind of dicked around with. So, this is seemingly gonna happen. We just gotta get a good fight date and something that’s fucken sexy and timely.”

Former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold could make his highly-anticipated return to the octagon sooner rather than later after it was reported that he has been offered a bout with Top-10 middleweight contender Sean Strickland for a later date.

Rockhold has been on the sidelines for a while since announcing his intentions to not only return to the UFC but also to cut weight and return to the division that he once held the belt in.

Rockhold made a brief trip to light heavyweight where he lost against then-top contender Jan Blachowicz at UFC 239, just a couple of fights before Blachowicz became the UFC light heavyweight champion. The 36-year-old Rockhold lost two of his last three middleweight fights, including an all-time upset against short-notice replacement Michael Bisping.

UFC president Dana White has been looking for an opponent for Rockhold for months, and it sounds like he’s found a matchup with Strickland to be his return to the octagon. Nothing has been accepted or agreed upon on Rockhold’s side of things just yet, but that could come soon. White confirmed to TSN’s Aaron Bronsteter that the Rockhold vs. Strickland fight has been offered to both sides just days after Strickland’s unanimous decision win over Uriah Hall at UFC Vegas 33.

Rockhold has talked a lot in recent media interviews about the prospects of a potential fight with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, saying that he is confident that he could give the reigning champion issues if the two were to cross paths in the octagon.

A win over Strickland would give Rockhold the clout that he would need to make another potential run at the belt, but a lot has changed in the division since he last fought. It is arguably a deeper, more talented division and the race for a shot at Adesanya is more crowded than ever before.

What is your way-too-early prediction for a fight between Luke Rockhold and Sean Strickland?

It wouldn’t be right if we didn’t have some controversial comments from a UFC fighter — especially Sean Strickland.

Strickland is coming off an impressive unanimous decision win over Uriah Hall in their UFC Vegas 33 headliner last night. As a result, Strickland made it five wins in a row and will undoubtedly be targeting a top-ranked opponent next.

However, his post-fight comments seem to have made more headlines.

After stating that he was addicted to pornography and that he’d probably be cooking meth in a trailer if he wasn’t a UFC fighter, Strickland stated what would make him happy in a fight.

“If you like to f*cking hurt people, you’re in the right sport,” Strickland said (via MMA Fighting). “I would love nothing more than to kill somebody in the ring. Nothing more. It would make me super happy.

“I would own that sh*t, too. I don’t know if it would make me liable, I might have to say I’m sorry if the cops came, but I would own that sh*t. Own it. Be a psychopath, it’s f*cking fun!”

Strickland also added the not-so-surprising comment that he would probably be one of the last fighters the UFC wanted to represent them as a champion.

“I’m probably the last person they want as the champion,” Strickland added. “‘So Sean what do you think about the UFC?’ I mean it’s cool, they pay me well, it’s cool. I’m the last one they probably want to be the champion.”

Strickland isn’t the first nor the last person to talk about wanting to kill someone inside the ring. Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder did the same as well.

But that doesn’t make it any less stupid or bizarre to say.
