Unnamed ‘UFC Champ’ Thwarts Robbery in Chicago; Mugger Gets Shot in Leg and Face Pounded

(You dun goofed, son.)

A story of street justice out of Chicago today that makes Jon Jones’ bout of heroism seem like a boyscout helping an old lady across the street, claims that a “UFC champion” fended off an armed mugger and would-be carjacker on Friday.

According to various reports that originated from a police report of the incident that was released today, a 24-year-old career criminal got his just desserts when he pulled a gun on a seasoned MMA fighter and ordered him out of his vehicle after lightening his wallet.

Here’s the breakdown courtesy of MyFoxChicago:

Police say 24-year-old Anthony Miranda walked up to a car which was parked near 55th and Kenneth about 11:30 p.m. and asked the driver for a lighter.

When the driver said he didn’t have one, Miranda allegedly pulled a handgun, pointed it at the driver and demanded money. And even after getting some money, he ordered the driver out of the car, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

At some point, Miranda’s attention was diverted and the victim was able to grab control of the gun and the two wrestled.

During the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his gun, shooting himself in the ankle, Mirabelli said.

The victim — who told police he’s a martial arts expert and ultimate fighting champion — was able to pin Miranda down until police arrived. Police arrived to find Miranda with a face full of lacerations and two black eyes. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment, police said.

Miranda, a convicted felon, is charged with armed robbery and aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class X felony.

He was ordered held on $350,000 bond Sunday, according to the CooK County Sheriff’s office.

Records show he has several convictions, including at least one for a residential burglary.

There’s a pretty good chance that the cops who wrote up the report may be confusing “MMA” with “Ultimate Fighting,” but just to be sure we contacted the management of the city’s only fighter who has worn UFC gold, Andrei Arlovski to ask if “The Pitbull” was the intended victim. As of the time of writing, we have not heard back from his agent.

Some other Chicago-based UFC veterans who could fit the bill include Stephan Bonnar, Miguel Torres, Shonie Carter, Danny Downes, Bart Palaszewski and Jeff Curran.

In the last edition of Fighter vs. Writer, I smoked “Mr. International” Shonie Carter by a healthy margin with my UFC 123 picks. The victory was sweet, and somewhat rare, but it’s over now and all that matters is the next showdown.

With UFC 124 going down in Montreal tonight, I tapped UFC heavyweight and former “Ultimate Fighter” contestant Matt Mitrione to go head-to-head with me in a fight-picking battle to the death.

When it came to making picks, Mitrione was easily the most enthusiastic and verbose opponent I’ve faced in this series, but is he the most formidable? Find out below, but be warned, some of his picks may shock you…

Shonie Carter has no regrets. It’s been a long ride, and maybe some things didn’t turn out like he planned, but after more than a decade as a professional fighter there’s not much he would do differently.

“I’ve had my great adventures,” Carter told MMA Fighting. “I went to Tiananmen Square, just because I was there. I was on the Great Wall before I knew ya’ll. You know? I fought in Tokyo. I wrestled a bear in Russia. It’s been beautiful.”

But now it’s over, according to Carter. After a decision loss to Jeremy Knafo in Tel Aviv, Israel earlier this month, “Mr. International” decided to hang up the gloves. So he says. Now he has a new venture in mind.

“I want to go to the WWE,” Carter said. “I’ve talked to CM Punk about it. He works out at my gym. …I’m coming to acknowledge the mid-life crisis that a lot of guys go through where they get a Corvette and a hot blonde girlfriend with big boobs. I’ve just decided to do the WWE.”

Next Stop for Shonie Carter? WWE, Duh

As it stands, the Potato has what you might call in the parlance of the fight game a “verbal agreement” in place to have Shonie Carter on an upcoming episode of The Bum Rush. So far it’s just been a matter of getting our schedules to mesh. When it happens and we get Mr. International live on the air you can damn sure bet we’re going to get to the bottom of this little tidbit: Recently retired, it now appears that Carter wants to take his singular talents to the world of professional wrestling. At least that’s what he told Old Dad on Wednesday in an interview over on MMA Fighting.

"I want to go to the WWE … ," Carter says. "I’m coming to acknowledge the midlife crisis that a lot of guys go through where they get a Corvette and a hot blonde girlfriend with big boobs. I’ve just decided to do the WWE. Overtime, that will be my name. Overtime, because I work hard. I put that hard hat on, I bring a lunchbox, and I punch in. If you get in that ring with me, you better punch in too, because you’re going to be working overtime."

Phew, midlife crisis averted. Still, we can’t help but wonder: Wouldn’t it be possible for Shonie to go to WWE and get the hot blonde girlfriend with big boobs? Just sayin.

When last we left the Fighter vs. Writer series, Gerald Harris came out looking like an absolute genius when he refused to pick a winner in the Jorge Rivera-Alessio Sakara fight. At the time it seemed like a tactical error, but then the fight was called off, Harris got the point and the victory, and I became very sad.

This week I match wits with Shonie Carter, a longtime MMA veteran who recently announced he was hanging up the gloves (more on that soon). “Mr. International” has forgotten more about the fight game than most people will ever know, but can he predict the future?

Find out below, as Shonie and I go head-to-head with our UFC 123 picks.
