SportsPotato: Cardinals Center Fielder Peter Bourjos KO’s Teammate With Vicious Sliding Knee

With all the vicious knockouts taking place at Fight Night 75 and Bellator 143 over the weekend, you’d think it would be damn near impossible for any non-combat sport to top MMA in terms of pure violence. But then, the work week rolls in and professional baseball somehow takes the cake.

In the 7th inning of last night’s Cardinals-Pirates game, Pittsburgh third baseman Josh Harrison drilled a shot to center field, drawing in both center fielder Peter Bourjos and left fielder Stephen Piscotty in at break neck speed in an attempt to field the ball. Piscotty opted for a head first dive to make the play, while Bourjos went with a knee-first slide. The resulting collision was undeniably one of the most horrific knockouts in professional baseball history.

Piscotty was immediately rendered unconscious by the brutal knee and eventually had to be carted off the field on a stretcher. The good news is that the rookie only appeared to suffer a concussion from the collision and not the broken jaw most MMA fans would have put him on as soon as he started bleeding from his mouth like a stuck pig. (Was that too far? I don’t even know where the line is when it comes to empathy anymore. MMA has truly desensitized me.)

Let’s hope Piscotty is able to have a quick turnaround from such a horrendous injury. In the meantime, God damn, baseball. You scary.

SportsPotato: Watch (Or Don’t Watch) This BRUTAL, Achilles-Rupturing Heel Hook From a Welsh Rugby Match

The last time we checked in with…the entire sport of rugby, we saw Wigan Warriors prop Ben Flower savagely KO Lance Hohaia of St Helens RLFC with what BG dubbed “one of the most disgusting fouls I’ve ever seen in a non-combat sport.” And today, it appears that that landmark cheap shot has been surpassed.

During a match between the North Wales Crusaders and the Rochdale Hornets over the weekend, Tony Suffolk committed the hands-down most atrocious foul *I’ve* ever seen, tackling Crusaders forward Alex Thompson to the ground in the opening minutes and applying a brutal heel hook that effectively ended Thompson’s season. According to various sources, the heel hook not only ruptured Thompson’s achilles but damaged his MCL as well, forcing him to take unpaid leave from his job as a landscape gardener. (Because believe it or not, not all countries pay their athletes enough to affect entire economies. Weird.)

What an absolutely abhorrent display by Suffolk there, but luckily (and inexplicably), we here at CagePotato have been given the honor of handing down his punishment: Two minutes on the mat with THIS GUY:

God help you, Tony Suffolk.

GOD.

HELP.

YOU.

SportsPotato: Ben Flower Scores Savage KO Via Punches During Rugby Match, Is Ejected

I don’t pretend to understand the rules of rugby, but I do know this — you are generally not allowed to punch an unconscious opponent in the face. This weekend at the 2014 Super League Grand Final, a hulking Wigan Warriors prop named Ben Flower got his dumb ass ejected in the second minute of the game when he forgot which sport he was playing, knocked out Lance Hohaia with a straight right, then landed another devastating blow from above because Steve Mazzagatti hadn’t jumped in yet. (Skip to 0:43 for the replay.) It’s honestly one of the most disgusting fouls I’ve ever seen in a a non-combat-sport, and fortunately, Flower’s team lost the game.

SportsPotato: Serge Ibaka Lands Clean Right Hook to Blake Griffin’s Dick/Balls Area [VIDEO]

The 2014 NBA playoffs have been rather chippy, to say the least. During game 4 of the Los Angeles Clippers vs. Oklahoma City Thunder series yesterday, Thunder power-forward Serge Ibaka responded to a shove from Blake Griffin by switching to southpaw stance and landing a lead right hook directly to Griffin’s crotch. Griffin limped off downcourt following the punch, very much like a man who had just had his nuts racked.

Keep in mind that this happened in the very beginning of the game, when the score was still tied at zero. Indeed, a message had been sent early, though Ibaka later said the low blow was an accident. The Clippers went on to beat the Thunder by a score of 101-99, tying their series at 2-2.
