MMA Fighting recently spoke to Stefan Struve about his upcoming UFC 124 fight against Sean McCorkle and about all the trash talk “The Curtain Jerker” has been saying about him. At the time, Struve seemed to have no interest in responding, but since then, he has started his own photoshop contest on MMA.tv in honor of McCorkle. It appears as though “The Skyscraper” has experienced a change of heart, and is now taking the bait.

Every fighter starts with dreams of greatness. Championship belts, screaming crowds – the whole deal. It’s normal. It’s rational, in its own way. It’s the special brand of optimism that comes with feeling young and invincible.

Antoni Hardonk was no different in that regard. But there came a point when he had to be honest with himself about where he was headed and what he was capable of.

“In your twenties, you don’t think about the future as much,” the Dutch kickboxer and UFC veteran told MMA Fighting recently. “You do whatever you feel like doing and you don’t think about it. In your thirties, the future is more of a consideration. For me, I’m a good competitor, I have some talent, but I can’t retire on that. I can survive, but that’s basically it. So I decided I had to move on.”

Stefan Struve isn’t a stranger to getting his face bloodied. His preliminary card match against Christian Morecraft at UFC 117 was no different, as the UFC newbie turned Struve’s lip into a busted, swollen mess during the lopsided first round. Like a champion, Struve fought back in the second and scored a brutal KO stoppage. The performance earned Stefan a spot in the ultra-exclusive ranks of the MMA Split Lip Hall of Fame. More notable members are after the jump…

As Anderson Silva made his way to the Octagon in Oakland on Saturday night, Chael Sonnen paced around inside the cage, staring Silva down and beckoning for him to come on inside and get a piece. It was classic pro wrestling-style stuff, and it perfectly complimented Sonnen’s entire pre-fight schtick.

That was something I expected from Sonnen on fight night. It was what happened after that really surprised me.

As Silva reminded us several times, talking is easy. Doing it as well and in as consistently entertaining a fashion as Sonnen is a little harder, but it’s still nothing compared to going toe-to-toe with the pound-for-pound best in the sport. Sonnen’s pre-fight routine seemed like an act, but his performance in the fight proved that even if no one else believed he could back up those words, he never doubted it for a second.

As expected, Chael Sonnen and Anderson Silva got the nod from the UFC for the Fight of the Night at UFC 117, netting them both an extra $60,000 for their trouble. Silva also pocketed another sixty grand for his triangle choke finish, which was awarded dual Submission of the Night honors along with Matt Hughes, who took home the prize because, as Dana White put it, “I’ve never seen it before.”

Knockout of the Night went to Stefan Struve, who survived a disastrous first round against Christian Morecraft to score a come-from-behind TKO victory early in the second frame of his preliminary bout.
