Dana White: ‘I Don’t Hate Stephan Bonnar, I Just Don’t Want to Talk to Him Now’

MONTREAL — Time does not heal all wounds. Sometimes it just leaves the wound open and raw. Such is the case concerning the wound Stephan Bonnar left UFC president Dana White with after Bonnar was popped for steroids following his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 153 (via MMAjunkie.com).

Bonnar, a long-time favorite of White’s ever since his performance in the first-season finale of The Ultimate Fighter, took the fight with Silva on short notice, losing via technical knockout at 4:40 of Round 1.

As far as his feelings on the subject of Bonnar’s positive drug test, White offered, “It sucks. I think the thing that bums me out the most about the Bonnar thing is he didn’t tell me. I offered you this fight. He wasn’t planning on fighting. He said he was practicing to maybe do some pro wrestling and doing this stuff and whatever the excuse is. I’ve known Stephan for a long time, we have a great relationship, tell me. That’s the thing that disappoints me the most.”

The positive steroid test resulted in a one-year suspension for Bonnar, who announced his retirement from MMA following the defeat to Silva.

White did say that Bonnar had reached out to him, but that the call went unanswered, “I haven’t even answered his phone call. I don’t hate him, but I just don’t want to talk to him right now.”

As for Bonnar’s future with the UFC, White wouldn’t speculate as to if the positive steroid test would affect Bonnar appearing on UFC television broadcasts where he is sometimes employed as an analyst.

It should also be noted that this is not the first positive steroid test for Bonnar. His first positive test came after a loss to Forrest Griffin at UFC 62

Stephan Bonnar Suspended for One Year Following Failed UFC 153 Drug Test, Dave Herman to Receive Much Weirder Punishment

(Unfortunately for him, Bonnar’s sad puppy face failed to inspire any sympathy.)

Not that it really matters given his retirement from the sport and all, but according to the UFC’s VP of regulatory affairs, Marc Ratner, the verdict has already been turned in for Stephan Bonnar, who pissed hot after his UFC 153 loss to Anderson Silva. “The American Psycho” will receive a one year suspension as a result of his positive test for Drostanolone. But again, being that Bonnar pulled a Richard Nixon and got the fuck out of office — thereby negating the weight of all possible punishments — we’re sure he won’t be planning on putting up much of a fight. The fact that he has yet to even make a statement regarding his test further solidifies this theory.

But here’s where things get interesting.

Also according to Ratner, the punishment in the case of Dave Herman‘s second failed test for marijuana will not only be a suspension of “months,” but could require him to enter a rehab facility as well.

But here’s where things get interesting.

Also according to Ratner, the punishment in the case of Dave Herman‘s second failed test for marijuana will not only be a suspension of “months,” but could require him to enter a rehab facility as well.

As he told MMAFighting:

Other sports have a difference between PEDs and recreational drugs.

We feel very strongly that there’s a big difference between PED’s [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana. We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it.

Let’s just back the judgmental truck up for a second, Mr. Ratner. If you’re one of the ten remaining people on this earth who thinks that the general public needs to be made more aware of any possible effects/dangers of marijuana, fine. That is clearly not the case for 90% of today’s youth, let alone a grown ass man like Dave Herman, but this is America, and although we may not agree with your assessment, we will defend to the death your right to say it.

But if you are going to declare that a fighter should have to undergo more treatment for a positive marijuana test than for a positive steroid-related test – in a combat sport, mind you — then it really calls to question your judgement as a former executive director of one of the athletic commission’s that are doing such a “good job” controlling steroid usage. While one of the substances you just mentioned allows a person to do little more than make it through a Taco Bell mexican pizza without vomiting, the other has a side effect that includes the word “rage” in the phrase. And you think fighters need to be made more aware of the possible dangers the former could lead to?

I don’t even know anymore. You Taters can take this one.

UFC News: Stephan Bonnar Suspended One Year After Second Failed Drug Test

Despite recently announcing his retirement, the UFC did not show any leniency towards Stephan Bonnar for testing positive for steroids for the second time in his career. MMA Fighting broke the news this afternoon, receiving confirmation from Marc …

Despite recently announcing his retirement, the UFC did not show any leniency towards Stephan Bonnar for testing positive for steroids for the second time in his career.

MMA Fighting broke the news this afternoon, receiving confirmation from Marc Ratner, the UFC’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs, that “The American Psycho” will be suspended until Oct. 13, 2013.

“We feel very strongly that there’s a big difference between PED’s [performance-enhancing drugs] and marijuana,” Ratner said. “We think the commissions do a good job with PEDs, but we think with marijuana there should be some form of rehab involved, going through that kind of process and learning about it … Other sports have a difference between PEDs and recreational drugs.”

Bonnar tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone in a drug test administered after UFC 153, where Bonnar suffered a first round TKO at the hands of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

The bout, which took place in Silva’s homeland of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was contested at light heavyweight.

Dave “Pee Wee” Herman also failed his UFC 153 post-fight drug test. This was also his second time failing a drug test under the UFC banner, however, in both instances Herman tested positive for marijuana.

Since the event took place outside of the United States and Canada, the UFC acts as their own athletic commission.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Bonnar for nine months, also issuing a $5,000 fine, shortly after UFC 62 when he tested positive for the anabolic steroid Boldenone. Bonnar lost a rematch to Forrest Griffin at the event.

Bonnar owned up to the positive test, stating he used the drug in order to rehabilitate an elbow injury leading up to the fight.

In Herman’s case, he failed his first drug test prior to UFC 136, where a bout with Mike Russow was planned. Despite being pulled from the card, the Team Quest fighter insisted he had not used marijuana leading up to the bout.

Given this breaking news, have MMA fans officially seen the last of Bonnar inside the Octagon?

[VIDEO] Rampage Jackson, Eddie Alvarez, + More React to Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman’s Positive UFC 153 Tests

(If this man does not strike you as the kind of person who spends most of his free time getting stoned, playing Xbox, and waxing poetic about the flaws of Jiu-Jitsu, then we don’t know who does.)

When we first heard word that Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman failed their UFC 153 drug tests — for Drostanolone and Marijuana respectively — we couldn’t help but reflect on the timeless words of George W. Bush when he stated, “Fool me once…..shame on………..shame on you. Fool me, I can’t get fooled again.” Unfortunately for Bonnar and Herman, they failed to fool the piss test even once while in the UFC (at least to our knowledge) and have felt the unforgiving wrath of the Interwebs as a result of their insolence. Hearts were broken. Tears were shed. Butts were hurt.

And in an effort to gauge their fellow fighters feelings on the issue, FightHubTv recently interviewed such fighters as Travis Browne, Eddie Alvarez, and Tyrone Spong to get some perspective on the issue. Also, Rampage Jackson threw in his two cents and actually managed to do so without turning the interview into another “Dear Diary” entry aimed at the UFC. Good for him.

Go figure, the general sentiment seems to be that penalizing a fighter for smoking marijuana is overkill. That being said, no one is exactly quick to forgive a so-called professional like Herman who has tested positive for marijuana twice now in just a four fight UFC career.

When asked on the issue of Mary J, Tyrone Spong can only nonchalantly remind us that “I’m from Amsterdam,” with a smile. Point taken, Tyrone. Eddie Alvarez, on the other hand, couldn’t give a fuck if your were huffing cat piss and lighting off fire crackers in your ass before you fought him, because it probably wouldn’t improve your chances anyway.

Although the general public reaction to Bonnar’s second failed test has been that he was simply going honey badger for his final UFC fight, you have to imagine that “The American Psycho” suffered some undisclosed injury in training that forced him to hit the juice. Why else would he cheapen the value of the final fight of his career, especially when he asked for such a big fight to begin with? If it turns out that Bonnar was just juicing for the hell of it, it will really call into question what exactly he was thinking heading into UFC 153.

Look at me, trying to to understand the mind of this man. It’s like asking your dog why he chases his own tail. Or why your favorite prostitute will never say “I love you” back.

Zuffa Issues Statement on Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman Failed Drug Tests

After MMA Junkie broke the news Friday that Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman failed their UFC 153 post-fight drug tests, Zuffa LLC, the owner of the UFC, issued an update on the situation via a statement on UFC.com

“Stephan Bonnar and Dave Herman tested positive for banned substances following their bouts at UFC 153. The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance-enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents. Both fighters have admitted taking the banned substances and have orally agreed to suspensions. Once the suspensions have been reduced to written agreements, the results of their tests and the agreed upon suspensions will be sent to the Association of Boxing Commissions official record-keeper so other jurisdictions will be on notice.”

Various MMA media outlets reported on Friday that UFC officials confirmed that Bonnar tested positive for the anabolic steroid Drostanolone, while Herman tested positive for marijuana metabolites.

This was not the first positive drug test for either fighter. Herman was scheduled to face Mike Russow at UFC 136, but was removed from the card when he tested positive for marijuana during a preliminary drug test. Herman denied using the drug leading up to the bout.

“The American Psycho” had traces of Boldenone metabolites, an anabolic steroid, in his system after his UFC 62 bout with Forrest Griffin in Aug. 2006. Bonnar owned up to taking the drug, stating that he only used the banned substance to help speed up an elbow injury.

Bonnar confirmed on his Facebook fan page earlier in the week that he would be retiring following his UFC 153 loss to UFC middleweight champion Anderson SilvaBonnar had won three fights in a row prior to the loss to Silva.

Meanwhile, Herman lost his third fight in a row when he was submitted by Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 153. That, coupled with his second positive drug test, likely means “Pee Wee” will be handed his walking papers in the near future.

The UFC typically acts as their own athletic commission for events held outside of the United States and Canada. Since UFC 153 took place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that’s exactly what happened here.
