When I was a young boy, my father sat me on the sofa next to him and together, we shared something magical.

We watched as Muhammad Ali battered some game yet hopelessly outclassed opponent along the ropes, knocking out his mouth piece. I remember that moment in particular: the sight of that white shape flying out of his head so fast that I had to ask my father for confirmation as to what had just happened.

It was my first exposure to the world of combative sport, and there was no doubt that for me, boxing was king.

Fast forward many years later. I sit down next to my father, pop in a UFC DVD and introduce him to the sport of MMA.

Now, he and I (and my step-mother, a shockingly astute fight fan and fight prognosticator) watch both sports with equal passion, ordering more UFC pay-per-view events than many others I know.

This story is not an uncommon one.

The president of the UFC, Dana White, came to the fight game as a fan of boxing, and a fan of boxing he remains to this day.

There are a number of MMA fans who cannot understand, or perhaps tolerate, any comparisons between boxing and MMA. They rightly feel they are two different sports, and MMA doesn’t need validation from the sport of boxing, via comparisons, to stand on its own.

This makes perfect sense. MMA fought its way onto the big stage, and in many ways it has succeeded in spite of the sport of boxing, which has given MMA some of its biggest and most vocal detractors.

But the comparisons aren’t going to end anytime soon, but for one reason: boxing is the history of combative sport, much more so than MMA and jiu-jitsu.

The sport of boxing has produced some of the most incredible, jaw-dropping, toe-to-toe fights that have ever been seen. It has also produced some of the greatest fistic talents the world has ever known.

Many new fight fans that are drawn to the combative sports due to the lure of the UFC have no use for boxing. For them boxing is stagnant and boring.

Then, of course, there are fans like myself and my father: coming from a different generation, where boxing was all that was both great and awful about the fight game. We find MMA just as new and exciting and incredible as anyone else, but we can’t help but compare these new times with the old times.

Because both put a smile on our faces.

Of course, there are technical reasons as well. MMA is about fighting, while boxing is about an aspect of fighting. Boxing is the potatoes in the potato salad of MMA, so to speak.

Some fans are always going to wonder how a fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Lennox Lewis would do in the sport of MMA, augmenting their considerable boxing skills with jiu-jitsu, grappling and so on. It’s not like the sport of MMA doesn’t have some aspects of the striking game that need improving.

But if pressed for a simple, honest answer: it’s because of the wars.

How can you, as a boxing fan, not feel for Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar what you felt when watching Arturo Gatti vs. Micky Ward I, for example? Great wars are in a class by themselves, and for many, they share the same real estate on the top shelf, and that is exactly where they belong.

When you start trying to place one epic bout above another, you are splitting hairs plucked from the same head.

Boxing and MMA may indeed be different sports, but the epic fights they produce are all the same species of animal: fearless, noble, strong and fast, unyielding and so beautiful to watch when it runs.

Crazy Story of the Day: Stephan Bonnar Detained in Bahrain, Bitten by Camel Spider

(Nope. Nothing suspicious here.)

Fact: Next to the DMV and Detroit, airports are the most terrible places on the face of our dying planet. Fact: Stephan Bonnar is a dog-fighting, gun-toting, BAMF who is not afraid to to stare Death in the eyes and wipe that bitchy smirk off his face. Being the “gives not a fuck” type of guy that “The American Pyscho” is, the MMA apparel company he co-founded, NGAUGE, have found themselves in quite a bit of hot water lately, mainly due to the “gives not a fuck” attitude of their “Trash Talkin Kids” t-shirt line. Perhaps you’ve heard of it.

After getting into a little legal tossup with Josh Koscheck last summer, you would probably think that Bonnar’s t-shirt based troubles were over. You would be wrong, and I would implore you to stop being so Goddamn ignorant.

You see, alongside Rich Franklin and Keith Jardine, Bonnar was kind enough to travel all the way to Bahrain to visit some of the U.S. Troops recently. He was likely charming, and he likely brightened their day. But proving that no good deed goes unpunished, on Bonnar’s way out of the country, he was detained by airport security, interrogated for over a day, and bitten by a poisonous camel spider before finally being allowed to leave. Why, you ask? Because apparently airport security didn’t appreciate the subtlety of the Melvin Guillard “Young Assassin” shirt that Bonnar was wearing.

He recounted the ridiculous story on Tuesday’s episode of Inside MMA

We’re getting ready to leave Bahrain, and I get detained at the airport. Jardine and Franklin get on the flight, and they take me in the room. They’re asking me all these questions, and they’re furious. One guy’s comin’ in the room and pointin’ at me, all furious, like that. And, what I think is that, I had on the ‘Young Assassin’ shirt, with Melvin Guillard, and there’s a guy with a turban with his brains spillin’ out. I don’t think they liked that too much.

Check out more from Bonnar’s interview, along with a nasty photo of the spider bite and two video updates taken by Bonnar himself while the ordeal was occurring, after the jump.

Bonnar continued:

There was only one flight out for the day at 9:30 p.m. The United flight that I was on. They kept me at the airport so long, I missed my flight. I had to wait till the next day to get on the flight. So, I’m tired. I’m sleeping at the airport, and all of a sudden, I wake up to a burning sensation on my leg. It scared me. I went and brushed down on my leg and, sure enough, a spider about the size of my hand comes crawling out of my pant leg and takes off runnin’! I couldn’t believe my eyes! This big camel spider goes under the door. I try to chase it. I lose it, and then, my God, my leg swells up, I get a fever, it’s gettin’ infected…but, hey, I’m gettin’ the heck out of there. The next night, I’m on that 9:30 flight, I’m ready to board that flight when, lo and behold…THAT flight gets canceled! So I’m stuck there another day! So, I had the option of going in for an antibiotic IV or stay in the hospital a few days, but instead, I opted to go the oral route, three different kinds of antibiotics, and I got on that flight that next day and got the hell out of there! God bless America!

Not creeped out enough yet? Well, take a look at a photo of the bite he received on his leg while detained, one that apparently came from a spider the size of a dinner plate.

Your move, Rashad.

If you’ve got a couple more minutes, and somehow still haven’t filled your creep tanks for the day, we’ve posted the videos of Bonnar’s plight below. Enjoy?

‘Punch Buddies’ T-Shirt Design Contest: In Which Our Winner Is Decided in a Hail of Bullets [VIDEO]

(Props: YouTube.com/TrashTalkinKids)

The wait is finally over. After keeping you guys on pins and needles for like a full month, we have a winner in our Urijah Faber t-shirt design contest with Punch Buddies. Watch the stunning conclusion above, in which Urijah, Stephan Bonnar, and Rachelle Leah take the finalists out to the desert and eliminate the losers one by one in the most hardcore way possible.

When the dust settles, they’re left with two designs that they can’t decide between — so Punch Buddies is producing both of them. Since the surfing California Kid shirt was created by one of PB’s own artists, our congrats really go to CagePotato reader Peter Starwalt, who went all the way with his beach/shark-themed design. Congrats, man! Your design is going to be on an actual MMA t-shirt, and you might actually see Faber wearing it someday! We’ll be dropping you a line shortly, because your wild ride is only getting started.

Also: Remember when I said we had a surprise for everybody whose design was featured in this contest? Well check it out: Urijah printed out and signed all your designs, and I’ll be sending them out to you guys over the next couple weeks. Keep an eye on your inboxes; we’ll be in touch.

UFC 145: Why Rashad Evans Has the Tools to Beat Jon Jones

Sometimes an individual emerges within the confines of the expected. In the combat sports, it happens suddenly, oftentimes wildly, and violently exceeds all those expectations with such ease that it’s almost vulgar.

Terms are quickly attached to such individuals: prodigy, virtuoso, wunderkind and so on.

When Jon Jones came into the spotlight against Stephan Bonnar at UFC 94, observers were left scrambling to find which of those terms best applied to this fluent, violent, almost acrobatic slam-machine that tossed Bonnar around the cage like a practice dummy.

But the truth is, we’ve seen this before.

Mark Coleman and Mark Kerr were thought to be unbeatable in their heyday, only to find out that the sport of MMA is one of constant motion. They thought their dominance was the status quo, but they learned that to stay the same in MMA is to seem immobile. In the jungle, it’s always the animals stuck in quicksand that are devoured.

Undefeated fighters have long basked in the glory of those calling them unbeatable. It is a fan virtue in the fight game to be the first to “see” greatness in its earliest stages and openly proclaim it before the fighter becomes popular.

But it rarely lasts; just ask fighters like Royce Gracie, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida and, of course, Rashad Evans.

Soon, he will bring his excellent record into the Octagon to challenge a man he knows well: the undefeated (disregarding the DQ loss to Matt Hamill) superstar of the moment, Jon “Bones” Jones.

So, who has the advantage? And where? Read on and find out.

It’s closer than you think.

Exclusive Video: Urijah Faber and Stephan Bonnar Go Through Your ‘Punch Buddies’ T-Shirt Designs, Episode 4

In the final opening-round matchup of our epic t-shirt design tournament with Punch Buddies, UFC talent judges Stephan Bonnar and Urijah Faber send one more of your designs to the quarterfinals. Their choices are:

“Captain Butt Chin” by Bobby [who’s misidentified in the vid, but whatevs]
vs.
“Urologist Faber” by Toby N.

As you’ll see in the video, both Stephan and Urijah fail to recognize Nazi pedophile Brandon Saling on the Captain Butt Chin shirt. We’re not sure if that affected Bobby’s chances, but it’s worth mentioning. Still, I think they made the right choice, simply based on Toby’s chin-placement.

The competition is only going to get tougher next week as we enter the quarterfinals. Catch up on our previous t-shirt tournament videos here, follow Punch Buddies on Twitter and Facebook, and let us know who you think is going all the way!
