UFC welterweight contender Colby Covington thinks that Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson shouldn’t be anywhere near the welterweight title picture, regardless of how his upcoming fight goes with Gilbert Burns at UFC 264.

Covington is still waiting on contract negotiations for a potential welterweight title rematch with Kamaru Usman. Thompson has emerged in the top-five after an impressive performance against Geoff Neal late last year.

Since being knocked out by Anthony Pettis, Thompson has rebounded in a big way with back-to-back wins. He is one of the few atop the UFC welterweight division who hasn’t fought against Usman yet and has been calling for a shot for months.

Covington fell to Usman at UFC 245 and won in his return to the octagon against former champion Tyron Woodley shortly thereafter. However, it’s safe to say that Covington doesn’t think Thompson has much stock when figuring out who should be Usman’s next title challenger.

“He’s gonna get hurt, for sure,” Covington said of Thompson. “He’s gonna come back for a paycheck, and these guys don’t know when to leave. You’ve got to know when it’s your time to hang it up. Your time has passed, you’re gonna get really hurt if you want to stay in this. But some guys want to take a paycheck to ruin their health.”

“He’s had, what, two or three title shots? He’s had more title shots than anyone in this division. He got destroyed by Woodley. He got dropped, bloody. Man, the guy’s a bum. I don’t know why he’s trying to talk like he deserves a title shot.”

Covington is widely expected to be the next opponent for Usman, who knocked out his former teammate Jorge Masvidal back at UFC 261 earlier this year. Covington has easily provided the toughest test to date for Usman despite falling by fifth-round knockout.

Thompson vs. Burns at UFC 264 is sure to be entertaining, and definitely a standup battle in its own right. A spectacular performance by either Burns or Thompson could give them the next title shot, despite UFC president Dana White already committing to Covington as the next title challenger.

Do you think Stephen Thompson deserves a title shot with a win over Gilbert Burns?

Stephen Thompson Tells Usman ‘You’re Not Quite There Yet’ Amid GSP Comparisons

UFC welterweight contender Stephen Thompson is not a fan of people who are comparing current 170lb king Kamaru Usman to one the greatest fighters of all time in Georges St-Pierre.

Usman spectacularly defended his welterweight strap for the third time against his former teammate, Gilbert Burns, at UFC 258 earlier this month.

‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ was dropped early but recovered well to beat up his opponent in round two and ultimately finish the fight in the third frame.

With this win, Usman continued his perfect record in the UFC. He has won 13 straight fights since joining the promotion and established a new welterweight record in the process – GSP previously held the record with 12 consecutive wins.

The record-breaking exploits of Usman have got MMA fans and pundits talking.

A section are now putting the Nigerian alongside or even above St-Pierre as the best 170lb fighter ever.

Thompson is not one of them and he made that much clear in a recent interview with Submission Radio.

“He is the best at the moment. And people are talking about him being up there with Georges St-Pierre, and I’m like, hold on, put the brakes on for a second,” Thompson said. “Like, you’ve defended it three times, and George St-Pierre I think was like nine or ten or twelve or something like that, he’s defended the title. I’m not really sure, but it was up there. And you’re not quite there yet. Yeah, he’s on the way, but he’s not quite there. That’s just in my eyes.”

‘Wonderboy’ is adamant Usman will have to face him at some point and sent a message to the champion, he said.

“Just let him know that I’m right behind him. To watch out for me. And he even said himself that one of the hardest guys in the division to prepare for is me. I’m gonna give him the hardest fight. But I’m getting better everyday too. Not just with my striking, but with my wrestling, my Jiu Jitsu, and wherever the fight goes I’m gonna be ready for it. And if we fought each other, I’m gonna be the one with my hands raised. So, let’s go, baby!”

Do you agree with Stephen Thompson? Are comparisons between Kamaru Usman and Georges St-Pierre premature?

Thompson Chimaev

Ever since Khamzat Chimaev knocked out Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Vegas 11, the UFC have been trying to book him against a ranked opponent. However, it seems that the task to find Chimaev an opponent is more difficult than it seems. The UFC already had a plan to book Chimaev vs Maia for Fight Island but it now seems that the fight fell through.

A report by Combate came out and said that the UFC are interested in booking Stephen Thompson vs Khamzat Chimaev for the main event slot on December 19, president Dana White came out and confirmed the fight has been offered to Wonderboy, “We’ve offered it to Wonderboy.” White also added that Wonderboy is interested in a fight against Leon Edwards, “Wonderboy wants to fight Leon Edwards.”

Reporter Ariel Helwani tweeted that the UFC were indeed interested in making that fight, between Thompson and Chimaev, happen in December but Wonderboy is not “interested” in it. Thompson has been looking to return to the octagon for the first time since his victory over Vicente Luque at Madison Square Garden in November, however it seems he is interested in someone ranked above him as he looks to try and earn a third title opportunity.

Khamzat Chimaev has been on a tear ever since his UFC debut at Fight Island 1, finishing all his opponents while jumping between the Welterweight division and the Middleweight division. Chimaev has been very vocal in trying to get a next fight, he even claimed he would stop both the Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman and the Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya. Chimaev has now called out Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz, Kamaru Usman, Israel Adesanya, Stephen Thompson and many more. The UFC now believe Chimaev is ready for a big step up in competition and are looking at giving him a main event slot in December.

Who do you think Chimaev should fight next?

Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson took to twitter to call out Leon Edwards for a fight. Wonderboy believes the matchup would ‘make sense’ and is a ‘great match up’. Both Thompson and Edwards are ranked in the top 5 in the welterweight division and both fighters are looking to return to the octagon soon.

However, rising star Khamzat Chimaev has other plans and told Thompson to ‘leave Leon alone’ as him and Wonderboy are fighting next. Chimaev is coming off his biggest victory in the octagon yet by knocking out Middleweight Gerald Meerschaert in 17 seconds at UFC Vegas 11, and it seems he has his sight set on the number 5 ranked welterweight next.

Chimaev is 3-0 in the UFC with three stoppages, and was supposed to fight Demian Maia next. However, now it seems the UFC is trying to get him another match up first. The ‘Wolf’ is now targeting big fights against ranked welterweight contenders. He recently stated, via Twitter, that he wanted either Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington, Leon Edwards, Stephen Thompson or Demian Maia next but now it seems he wants Wonderboy next out of all these names. If Chimaev got the Wonderboy fight it would be his first fight against a ranked contender in the UFC and a former title challenger.

Thompson has not fought since his unanimous decision victory over Vicente Luque at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden which earned him a fight of the night bonus. Wonderboy is looking to return to fighting soon and has recently expressed interest in welcoming Nick Diaz back to the octagon after it was revealed that Diaz wants to come back to fighting.

In an interview with MMA Fighting Thompson was asked about Chimaev in which he said “He’s definitely a tough dude and someone you have to keep your eye on for sure—somebody like me, especially.”

Top Welterweight contender and former two time title challenger Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson finally picked up a belt on Monday. The 36-year-old was awarded the Nicest Mother F*cker in the game belt whilst guesting on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show. The belt was presented by Helwani on behalf of Paradigm Sport Management, who over see Thompson’s career.

Just seconds after he became champ, ‘Wonderboy’ got his first NMF challenger. Conor McGregor took to social media to call for a shot at the belt, despite being unranked in the NMF division. In 2020 he promised to add yet another belt to his collection.

Replying to ESPN’s video on Twitter he said. “That belt is mine in 2020 motherbuddies!”

Wonderboy’ later took to social media to react to claiming the belt and accept the challenge of former dual weight champion McGregor. He said.

“It was AWESOME receiving the #nmf belt from Ariel Helwani and @Pardigmsm today!! And Conor McGregor it would be an HONOR to go toe to toe with the best in the bizz for the NMF belt good sir…or should I say… MOTHERBUDDY!!??#goodtimes #mma #ufc #nmf”

Whilst right now this is all fun and games, don’t be surprised to see UFC try to run with this.

Thompson looked sensational recently as he snapped a two-fight losing skin. The welterweight beat the breaks of Vicente Luque on route to a dominant decision win.

Prior to that he had lost consecutive bouts. His most recent came via knockout against heavy underdog Anthony Pettis. Darren Till also handed Thompson a loss when the pair fought five hard rounds in Liverpool last year.

Before that Thompson boasted an impressive UFC record that included big wins over the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Robert Whittaker and Rory MacDonald.

McGregor is currently slated to face Donad ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone is his long-awaited UFC comeback. ‘Notorious’ has not fought since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October 2018.

Dana White told media McGregor plans to fight three times in 2020. Cerrone of course will be one of those fights. The rest are to be decided and with the right promotion we could perhaps see McGregor and Thompson throw down for the MNF belt next year.

Vicente Luque picked up another big victory last night (Sat. August 10, 2019) inside the Octagon.

Luque bested Mike Perry on the judges’ scorecards after a three-round war. Both men took big damage during the bout, but especially Perry, who had his nose mangled after a nasty knee. After the win, Luque got on the mic and called his shot for his next fight. The Brazilian called for a bout with former title challenger Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. (via BJPenn.com)

“I’ve done four fights in less than 12 months now, and I think I’ve proved my point,” Luque said. “I’m ready to fight anybody in the top 10. I know ‘Wonderboy’ doesn’t have a fight lined up right now. I’m up to it in November, December, whenever he wants to. I’m up to go there and throw down with him.”

Calling out Thompson was a good strategy by Luque. “Wonderboy” is one of the biggest names in the division and a two-time title challenger. He comes off a knockout loss to Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, the first of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

Should he accept a bout with Luque, he’ll be stepping back into the cage with another proven finisher.
