Coker Doesn’t Care What M-1 Wants, Says Fedor Will Fight Overeem, Bigfoot or Kharitonov Next

Well, you squandered your fleeting fame and gave most of your money to the church … *cough* … did I mention we will always have each other?” PicProps: M-1 Global)

Despite claims by Fabricio Werdum’s manager that his client’s impending elbow surgery is not as severe as initially reported and that he’ll be willing and able to get back in action later this year, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says a rematch with Fedor Emelianenko isn’t in the cards, at least not right now. Coker told Sherdog.com on Saturday that when he restarts negotiations about Fedor’s future with M-1 Global next week his short list of prospective opponents will include Alistair Overeem, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Sergei Kharitonov.

As for M-1’s insistence that Emelianenko be granted an immediate rematch with Werdum in the wake of the Brazilian’s stunning victory over Fedor late last month, well, the suddenly badass Coker doesn’t appear to give a damn about that.

“I just don’t think they’ll have a choice,” he told Loretta Hunt.

It must add a certain amount of insult to injury for Strikeforce that the UFC is taking its sweet time signing Jake Shields. It’s almost like Dana White wants to remind Scott Coker (and everybody else) that the MMA world starts and stops at his convenience, not theirs. Yeah, just as soon as he rolls out of bed around 11 o’clock this morning, hits the gym, lunches at Delmonico’s, spends the requisite few minutes berating Marty Cordova and swings by Pinkberry for his snack, he might – if nothing else comes up – get around to locking down the excommunicated Strikeforce champ. Why be so leisurely about it? Because he can, motherfucker. Where else is Shields really going to go?

Despite reports this week from Shields’ own team that he’d finally slapped his John Hancock on one of the UFC’s notoriously draconian legal agreements, the company itself continues to deny it has formally come to terms with the Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu product. According to an MMA Fighting.com story published late Friday night however, Shields’ signing actually is looming and once it goes down, he could be looking at facing Martin Kampmann at welterweight in his promotional debut.

In theory, a midseason awards selection would preclude anything that happened after June 30, but let’s be informal and grant this awards column a four-day waiver so I can name UFC 116 as the fight card of the year thus far.

Perhaps because it is the freshest of events in our minds, it seems like the obvious winner, but even a closer look confirms what we knew. It was an event that had a little bit of everything you’d want in a night of action, from highlight reel finishes (Gerald Harris’ slam KO over Dave Branch) to brilliant technique (Chris Lytle’s finishing reverse triangle/armbar sequence) to a blistering main event between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin in what is rapidly becoming the sport’s glamour division.

Report: Jake Shields Signs With UFC; Debut Will Be at 170

Yes, there’s a very good chance that in your internet travels today, you will likely not come across a more predictable headline than above (save something similar to ‘What Lindsay Will Learn in Jail’). Yes, there’s a very good chance that in your internet travels today, you will likely not come across a more predictable headline than above (save something similar to ‘What Lindsay Will Learn in Jail’). Okay, to be fair, while everyone and their clairvoyant dog expected Jake Shields to sign with the UFC (the chances rose to what? 99% or so after he was released by Strikeforce?) there had been some talk that he might consider staying at middleweight.

Well, according to a report on Graciefighter.com (which is run by Cesar Gracie– the dude that taught Shield’s much of his ‘that’s a wrap’ ground game), Shields has indeed finally inked a deal with the UFC.

Jake Shields will be debuting at the 170lbs weight division in the UFC. After careful consideration and consulting with UFC representatives it was determined Jake would be finally going back to his original fighting weight…Jake’s opponent is one of the UFC’s top contenders and will be announced shortly

Cool beans. As far as debuting at welterweight, really, for the time being, that seems like the best choice for both Shields and the UFC (Dana White never seemed too thrilled about the idea of the former Strikeforce champ remaining at 185). Shields is a natural welterweight, and although he’s taken out bigger dudes like Robbie Lawler and Dan Henderson, there are some beasts in the UFC middleweight division. In other words, why put a huge free agent acquisition where he can’t be his very best? That can come later if need be.

So, it will be interesting to see which ‘top contender’ Shields faces first. If he wins- does he roll into a bout with the winner of GSP/ Koscheck II?

Strikeforce on Thursday made official the full fight card for its Challengers show July 23 in Everett, Wash.

Heavyweight Shane Del Rosario (9-0) puts his unbeaten record on the line against Lolohea Mahe (4-1-1) in the main event.

All nine of Del Rosario’s fights have been stoppage victories and just one has gone to the second round. His last win came more than eight months ago, an omoplata victory over Brandon Cash. Mahe is coming off a loss in his Strikeforce debut in March against Lavar Johnson.

In the co-main event, Strikeforce women’s bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman (11-0) puts her title on the line against Roxanne Modafferi (15-5), who upset Tara LaRosa by split decision at Moosin’s God of Martial Arts show in Massachusetts in May. It will be Kaufman’s first defense of the title.

Report: Fedor’s Next Opponent Still Uncertain; Fabricio Werdum Possibly Having Surgery

When Fabricio Werdum tapped out MMA deity Fedor Emelianenko on June 26th the foundations of the sport shook like it hasn’t in quite some time (other top-quake-contenders: Zuffa buying Pride? When Fabricio Werdum tapped out MMA deity Fedor Emelianenko on June 26th the foundations of the sport shook like it hasn’t in quite some time (other top-quake-contenders: Zuffa buying Pride? Randy Couture ‘retiring’ in 2007? Brock Lesnar being relatively civil after subbing Shane Carwin?) Not only did most people not see it coming, but it raised a ton of questions about Fedor’s immediate future.

Of course, it didn’t take long for both Fedor’s management (M-1) and Werdum himself, to talk about possibly doing an immediate rematch. Strikeforce’s Scott Coker didn’t seem to be too keen on that idea, and to the annoyance of some, talked about the possibility of doing Fedor / Overeem next. Well, according to a report from Super Lutas (thanks to MMA Mania for the translation), Werdum is considering undergoing surgery to repair an injured elbow he’s had for some time, stating “I might just get back next year.”

Next year? Looks like Coker should be able to green light Overeem / Fedor no problem now right? Not so fast. According to an updated report from BloodyElbow.com, the outlet contacted M-1’s Evgeni Kogani, who had this to say when asked about Werdum possibly going on the DL.

“(Werdum’s) gotta do what he’s gotta do. The re-match will be there, pre elbow surgery or post. That’s what the fans want and that’s what they will eventually get.”

When asked a follow up question about Fedor fighting Overeem, Kogani said they’d have to talk to their “partners”, with news on that coming “in a little while.” Soo… more drawn out negotiations to come or?
