Former duel-weight champion, Conor McGregor has been backed to make a stunning UFC return later this year by former Ultimate Fighter opposition coach, Urijah Faber – taking out Michael Chandler with strikes in his return to active competition.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of UFC, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 264 back in July 2021, suffering a fractured left tibia and fibula in a doctor’s stoppage TKO defeat to Dustin Poirier.

Conor McGregor is set to return to the USADA testing pool in the coming weeks

Expected to make his return in an end-of-year clash with Ultimate Fighter 31 opponent, Chandler, McGregor has earmarked a December clash with the Missouri native – at an expected UFC 296 clash, confirming his return to the USADA anti-doping testing pool in the coming weeks to boot.

Receiving a stamp of approval to defeat soon-to-be common-foe, Chandler inside two round by the above-mentioned, Poirier – Conor McGregor has now also been backed by former WEC featherweight champion, and UFC bantamweight title chaser, Faber to land a victory over Chandler this year.

“Traditionally in the past – you know, old-school MMA – I would have said the high-level wrestler’s always going to win,” Urijah Faber told ESPN. “But Conor (McGregor), I feel, has closed those gaps a lot. I think (Michael) Chandler takes a lot of big risks and likes to fight wild and aggressive, and I’ve seen many times where Conor’s power is just too much and his precision’s too much. And I think it’s going to be, in a five round fight, leaning toward McGregor.”

Without a victory since January 2020, Conor McGregor’s most recent win came at the welterweight limit – stopping incoming UFC Hall of Fame inductee, Donald Cerrone in a 40-second barrage, en route to an opening round TKO success.

Conor McGregor is expected to make an “immediate” USADA return

Expected to make his return to the Octagon before the close of this year ahead of his “immediate” return to the USADA testing pool, Conor McGregor has been tied to a welterweight fight with one-time lightweight contender, Michael Chandler – with the duo recently wrapping up filming on The Ultimate Fighter 31 this year.

Sharing his thoughts on the Dubliner’s return, UFC color-commentator, Bisping envisioned a December return for the former two-weight champion, before urging him to “get off the good stuff” and return to “protein shakes and porridge”.

“Where are we at now? May, so six months, you can fight at the end of the year,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “I think the idea was Madison Square Garden, that’s going to be Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic, judging by what everybody has been saying online.”

“So, the final card of the year at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, they [the UFC] have seven months for that,” Bisping explained. “So, Conor McGregor just has to get into the testing pool. He needs to get off the – whatever he’s on. He’s got to get off the good stuff, and get back on protein shakes and porridge, and we’ll be good. He’s got to do some work, he’s got to get training, he’s got to get in the gym, he’s got to do everything.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Colby (Covington) would be a good fight. I would love that Colby fight. I love the idea of a (Jorge) Masvidal fight, I wish him well in retirement.”

“I love that fight,” Michael Chandler explained. “(Nate) Diaz, I’m sure is gonna end up coming back [to the UFC], he’ll fight at 170 [pounds]. There’s some cool, big, fun fights out there too if I don’t get the title shot. But, like I said, I don’t think I deserve a title shot necessarily. If they [the UFC] give it to me, I ain’t saying no.”

Michael Chandler happy for Conor McGregor to skirt USADA pool I have no problem with it

UFC lightweight contender, Michael Chandler appears unmoved by the potential of incoming foe, Conor McGregor receiving an exemption to return to the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) testing pool for a period of six months before their fight, claiming the Dubliner would likely be “clean” to compete if just two negative drug test samples.

Chandler, the current #5 ranked lightweight contender, has been earmarked to share the Octagon with Crumlin counter striker, McGregor before the close of this year at the welterweight limit, with the duo competing as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this year.

And while an official date, location, venue, or event for the expected showdown of the strikers has yet to be determined by the promotion, Chandler remains hopeful that a fight with ex-two-weight champion, McGregor actually occurs before the end of this annum.

However, a sticking point for a return appears to be McGregor’s spat with anti-doping agency, USADA – with the 34-year-old appearing to attempt to skirt a mandatory six month period of entry in the testing pool, along with providing two negative drug test samples before he can make a return, with the former champion claiming the agency will not be the “be all and end all” determining his comeback.

Michael Chandler unmoved by Conor McGregor’s spat with USADA

And according to Missouri veteran, Chandler, he has no issue with McGregor receiving a UFC-approved exemption from the USADA testing pool period of six months in order to score a fight.

“Conor (McGregor) says one thing, USADA says another,” Michael Chandler told ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto. “As we like to see, Conor publicly be in spats, whether it be [with] Dana (White) here and there, other people here and there, sponsors here and there. People that don’t even make sense for him to be picking fights with; different weight classes, differen organizations. It’s all just a big show.”

“I don’t kow what the understanding is,” Michael Chandler explained. “I could see it very well being just two clean tests. I have no problem with it being two clean tests. I couldn’t care less. If you do two clean tests, sounds to me like you’re clean. At this point, who am I to say what the stipulations are? But obviously, yeah, I’m ready for him to get cleared.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Michael Chandler unsure UFC fight with Conor McGregor happens I think he's coming back

Former UFC lightweight title challenger, MIchael Chandler remains somewhat confident an earmarked fight with former champion, Conor McGregor actually occurs this year – claiming the Dubliner’s legacy would be stained entirely if he “chickened out” of a comeback.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the UFC banner, has been earmarked to make his Octagon return later this year in a welterweight fight against the current #5 ranked lightweight, Chandler, however, at the time of publication, neither have penned official bout agreements for a fight.

Featuring as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this annum, McGregor and Chandler appear to be on a certain collision-course, however, the pair have yet to see an official venue, date, event, or location confirmed for their expected fight.

Michael Chandler believes Conor McGregor fight eventually happens

As days and weeks rumble along without confirmation of a bout, many have speculated that the Crumlin native will fail to make good on a fight with Chandler, however, the latter believes McGregor’s ego won’t allow for him to withdraw now.

“That’s a thought that you have every single fight, every single fight camp leading up to stepping into the actual Octagon,” Michael Chandler told ESPN MMA reporter, Brett Okamoto. Of course, when it comes to Conor (McGregor) and what he’s doing, he’s one of the only guys that we’ve seen in this sport who really doesn’t have to keep fighting. When it comes to, ‘Hey, this guy doesn’t need to keep fighting, he’s got enough money, he’s got enough fame…’ So, of course, there’s that extra caveat.”

“But I think – and I’ve said this in the past – Conor, to his core, really is romantic about combat sports or the sport of mixed martial arts,” Michael Chandler explaine. “And I think he’s got an ego the size of Texas, so I think he needs to get back in there and continue to feel that rush… I think he’s coming back. It sure would be a huge stain on his legacy leading everyone down a road, making people think he’s coming back, and then kind of chickening out.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Himself sidelined since November of last year, Chandler featured on the main card of UFC 281, suffering an eventual third round rear-naked choke submission loss to common-foe, Dustin Poirier.
