Wrapping up filming on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this week ahead of his UFC return later this year, Conor McGregor admitted he has admiration for Michael Chandler, however, insists he will still “mince” the Missouri veteran.

McGregor, 34, a former two-weight champion under the banner of the UFC, returned to Las Vegas, Nevada back in February – beginning filming on the reality television show, The Ultimate Fighter. 

Coaching on the programs for the second time in his Octagon tenure, McGregor will feature opposite #5 ranked lightweight, Chandler, will the duo expected to fight later this year.

While an official date, location, venue, nor event for the bout has been determined, the UFC have floated a September showcase, however, McGregor has yet to return to the USADA testing pool.

Sidelined since July 2021, the Crumlin native suffered a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Dustin Poirier, fracturing his left tibia and fibula to boot.

Booking an outing opposite Chandler for his next Octagon walk, McGregor admitted that while he has admiration for the former – despite their documented run-in on the show, he will still “mince” him regardless.

“I had respect for (Michael) Chandler [before TUF 31] – we had an issue, right,” Conor McGregor told Barstool Sports. “Obviously, tempers are flaring – it’s a f*cking hostile thing. I like his style, he likes my style, we have a good little buzz.”

“There’s still competitive fire – I’m still gonna mince him,” Conor McGregor stated. “I know he’s gonna try and throw everything into his shots also. But there’s still admiration – that’s how it should be. That’s how sport should be, you should have the ability to separate it. We had an issue once during it, and it’s all good. Tempers were flaring – we got past it.”

In his most recent Octagon walk, Chandler suffered a third round submission loss to the above-mentioned, Poirier at UFC 281 back in November at Madison Square Garden.

Conor McGregor is set to rever to a more loose, karate-like style for his ucpoming Octagon return later this year, according to UFC weltererweight contender and former title challenger, Stephen Thompson, who spent time training with the Dubliner earlier this month.

McGregor, a former two-weight UFC champion, managed to strike gold in both the featherweight and lightweight divisions, between 2015 and 2016. 

Returning to Las Vegas, Nevada last month, Conor McGregor began filming on The Ultimate Fighter 31 alongside one-time vacant lightweight title challenger, Michael Chandler.

The 34-year-old, who is expected to make his Octagon comeback later this year, has been touted to fight the Missouri native later this year following the culmination of the reality television series, however, has yet to return to the USADA testing pool – despite a September showdown floated by the organization. 

Conor McGregor is slated to abandon a recent boxing-heavy striking approach

Pictured alongside Simponsville striking ace, Thompson at the UFC Performance Institute in recent weeks, McGregor’s fighting style appears to have reverted from a boxing-heavy base according to the former welterweight title challenger.

“He’s (Conor McGregor) getting back to his roots – his karate,” Stephen Thompson told Submission Radio during a recent interview. “He’s never taken karate in his life, but he’s trained with a lot of karate fighters, and that’s kind of where he got his movement from.”

“So, for instance, when he fought Jose Aldo, his movement – his wide stance, his speed was on point,” Thompson said. “Like, he’s back to that, man – at a heavier weight. Which is scary. And if you ever shook Conor’s hand, the dude’s got a bigger fist than i do. Like, he’s got a melon of a fist. I’m like, ‘What the heck, man?’ No wonder he puts people out with one-hitter-quitter punches.” (Transcribed by TalkSPORT)

In the midst of a two-fight losing skid, McGregor has dropped back-to-back losses to former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier – in the most recent fight, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in the main event of UFC 264 back in July 2021.

UFC president, Dana White has claimed that he is still unsure as to when a long-anticipated grudge match between former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor, and lightweight contender, Michael Chandler will take place – pointing to the Dubliner leg fracture potentially holding up his 2023 return to active competition.

As for Chandler, the one-time vacant lightweight title challenger featured most recently at UFC 281 back in November of last yeat against Poirier at Madison Square Garden, suffering a third round rear-naked choke submission loss to the Lafayette favorite.

Selected to feature as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 31 this year, Conor McGregor and Chandler recently began filming for the reality television show on location in Las Vegas, Nevada – with an alleged altercation taking place between the two at the UFC Apex facility just last week.

Dana White remains coy on Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback

And despite fans clamoring for more information on McGregor’s return against Chandler, White claims it’s far from a straightforward matchup to put together.

“They’re (Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler) going to fight,” Dana White told on The Pat McAfee show. “‘When’ isn’t guaranteed – when, what weight class, what are these guys doing. Conor’s filming this season of The Ultimate Fighter with Chandler. But Conor’s still coming back from that shin break.”

“There’s still a lot of questions and ifs, and we don’t have answers yet,” Dana White continued. 

At the time of publication, McGregor has yet to return to the USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) testing pool ahead of his Octagon return. And in order to compete, the Dubliner would require to feature in the pool for a period of six months, or acquire an exemption to compete from the promotion.

Details have emerged regarding last week’s alleged physical altercation between The Ultimate Fighter 31 coaches, Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, with reports claiming a slap was thrown between the pair after a contestant on the reality television show was knocked unconscious during a tense bracket bout.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the UFC banner – returned to Las Vegas last month to begin filming for TUF 31 against Chandler, with the duo serving as opposing coaches on the reality television show. 

Sitting front and center at UFC 285 last weekend alongside his long-time partner, Dee Devlin and fellow Roadhouse star, Jake Gylenhaal, Conor McGregor was alleged to have been involved in a rather heated confrontation with Chandler as per UFC leader, Dana White – who elected against divulging any information on the spat.

(Michael) Chandler and Conor (McGregor) were very respectful to each other, and then some things started escalating that you’ll see on the show,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC 285. “They do not like each other now. A lot sh*t went down on Friday.

There was a lot of sh*t that went down on Friday, yeah,” White explained. “I don’t look at stuff that’s good for the show or things like that. Whatever happens, happens. The stuff that just happened shouldn’t have happened and I’m getting old. I would have been in there sooner back in the days, but not good.

NSAC required to intervene run-in between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler

However, according to a report from Fansided MMA reporter, Amy Kaplan, a slap is alleged to have been thrown during McGregor’s altercation with Chandler, with officials from the Nevada State Athletic Commission required to corral the lightweight duo.

“Here’s what I learned about the McGregor/Chandler “indicent” that Dana was alluding to on Sat.” Kaplan tweeted. “Apparently, someone was KO’d and McGregor jumped in the cage, shoved Chandler, someone got slapped and the teams rushed the cage, NSAC broke it up.” 

Both Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler have predicted respecitvely that they will “slice though” and “bludgeon” the other en route to a victory in an expected end-of-season clash between the two.

As for Chandler, the one-time vacant lightweight championship challenger is expected to fight former two-weight gold holder, McGregor later this year upon the culmination of The Ultimate Fighter 31 – with the duo competing as opposing coaches against each other.

And ahead of the expected fight between the two, Chandler revealed Diaz warned him from defeating the ex-lightweight and featherweight champion, joking that it may scupper a trilogy rubber match between himself and McGregor in the future.

“He said (Nate Diaz) don’t go winning because we’re (Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor) are gonna do something,” Michael Chandler told Inside Fighting during a recent interview. “We’ll see what happens. We’re about half and half [attached to fights with McGregor], yeah. We are mutually beneficial opportunists who love to compete against each other. That’s where we’re at right now.”

Claiming he will “slice through” McGregor and “bludgeon” the Dubliner en route to an eventual second round finish, Chandler offered his own “Mystic Mike” premonition.

“I finish him (Conor McGregor) in the second round, that’s a ‘Mystic Mike’ projection,” Michae;l Chandler explained.

Former two-division UFC champion, Conor McGregor was in attendance at UFC 285 over the course of last weekend to watch Jon Jones become a two-weight champion himself, courtesy of a clear-cut submission win over Ciryl Gane – describing the victory as “incredible” from the Endicott native.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the UFC, had travelled back to Las Vegas at the end of last month, where he began filming for The Ultimate Fighter 31 where he serves as an opposing coach against lightweight contender, Michael Chandler.

Sharing a brief prediction ahead of Jones’ victory at the T-Mobile Arena, McGregor – who was reportedly involved in a heated run-in whilst filming with Chandler on Friday in ‘Sin City’, claimed he was hopeful of seeing Jones fulfil his “destiny”.

“That was incredible by Jon (Jones) last night!” Conor McGregor tweeted. “Even better to see it live! The man (Jones) should have had two belts presented to him. And both sparkling. He did it. F*cking brilliant @JonnyBones! Congrats!” 

Sidelined from the Octagon since his UFC 264 headliner with former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier back in July 2021, McGregor suffered a fractured left tibia and fibula en route to a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss.

Off the back of his submission win over Gane, Jones, the newly-minted heavyweight champion is now expected to headline UFC 290 against former two-time division belt holder, Stipe Miocic in July during International Fight Week.
