UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Julianna Peña has sent a warning ahead of the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter: expect noise.

Having won gold on MMA’s biggest stage in memorable fashion last December, Peña is set to return to her roots ahead of her first title defense later this year. Opposite Amanda Nunes, whom she dethroned at UFC 269, “The Venezuelan Vixen” will feature as a coach on this year’s edition of TUF, a reality show she won back in 2013.

At the culmination of the series, which premieres tomorrow night (May 3), Peña and Nunes will meet inside the Octagon for the second time.

As well as prepping for her rematch with the consensus female MMA GOAT, Peña will have had the challenge of developing and preparing her team for their own pursuit of a place in the UFC.

Given her vocal nature and confidence on the mic, it’ll perhaps come as no surprise that Peña’s boisterous personality shines through when she’s working with her pupils, something she’s warned viewers to expect when she’s present in her fighters’ corner.

Peña: “You’re Gonna Hear Me”

During a media scrum prior to the filming of TUF 30, Peña discussed her coaching stint, and how much she expects her competitive nature to transition to the different role.

After claiming that she’s a sought-after mind when it comes to being in the corner of local fighters, “The Venezuelan Vixen” suggested that’s down to two things: intelligence and volume.

With that in mind, the champion gave an early indication of the “annoying” presence fans can expect from her when watching Team Peña in action this season.

“When it comes to fighting, and I’ll just throw this forewarning out there, where I’m from, people would like, beg me to be their corner,” said Peña. “And I think it’s because they respect me as a fighter, but I also think it’s because I’m very loud. I have a very loud voice. It carries.

“So they would ask me to be in their corner because they know that if they get in a pinch, not only do I know what I’m talking about, I’m very loud and they’re gonna be able to hear me.

“So I’m just throwing it out there, please, caution to the wind, I’m probably gonna be the most annoying corner on Earth. However, if these fighters are fighting the way they should, and if they’re doing what they should be doing, you won’t hear a peep outta me.”

In an ideal world, Peña says her fighters would do everything perfectly and her advice won’t be needed. But given the developmental nature of TUF, it seems safe to say that we can expect some “squawking” from the bantamweight queen throughout this year’s edition.

“I want to make sure that they’re the best fighters that they can possibly be, and so I’m gonna get them ready for these fights in the short amount of time that we have. I’m gonna hope that I’m not squawking like a bird in their corner and they’re just gonna do their thing, and that they know what they’re doing. But, of course, with that being said, you’re gonna hear me,” concluded Peña.

Who's Next

FloGrappling is bringing a show similar to The Ultimate Fighter to the jiu-jitsu community with the launch of “Who’s Next”.

Taking inspiration from The Ultimate Fighter

UFC was not always the dominant force in MMA and back in the early 2000s, the promotion was in red and at risk of bankruptcy. They owed millions of dollars, weren’t making any money back at the time, fighting legal restrictions and regulators, and almost went under before putting together the show that would change the trajectory of their company’s success.

The Ultimate Fighter was born out of necessity to keep the organization afloat and the UFC only got Spike TV to pick up the show because they agreed to cover the production costs themselves which took away the financial risk from the cable channel. TUF debuted in January 2005 with 16 participants in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions competing for a UFC contract.

Chuck Liddell served as a coach along with Randy Couture for the initial season. The show gave a new look to the sport and turned out to be a massive win for the UFC with breakout stars coming in Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar, Josh Koscheck, Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, and Chris Leben.

“Who’s Next” debuting this May

Taking a page out of TUF’s playbook, FloGrappling will be launching their own show “Who’s Next” this May exclusively for BJJ practitioners. The show will feature 16 participants competing for a 3-match Who’s Number One contract. Who’s Number One (WNO) held its first event in February 2020 and has gone on to become one of the leading super-fight shows in jiu-jitsu. They launched the WNO championships in September 2021 where the five division winners were each awarded $30,000.

The show’s rules will be no time limit submission only. Coaches will be WNO Championship heavyweight winner Tim Spriggs and ADCC silver medalist Craig Jones. Spriggs came in the WNO heavyweight bracket in September as the biggest underdog but proved his mettle after beating Tex Johnson by decision in the first round, and submitting Haisam Rida and Kaynan Duarte, both via inside heel hook.

Jones had quite the start in the sport with submission victories over Leandro Lo and Murilo Santana at the 2017 ADCC World Championships. He has crafted his reputation as one of the best leg lockers in the game taking 2nd in 2019.

The Who’s Next cast includes Adam Bradley, Kyle Chambers, Josh Demas, Spencer Fossier, Jansen Gomes, Breylor Grout, Max Hansen, Izaak Michell, Dan Manasoiu, Tristan Overvig, Mike Rakshan, Fabian Ramirez, Jay Rodriguez, Rene Sousa, Andrew Tackett, and Andy Varela.

Who’s Next premiers on Wednesday, May 18th on flograppling.com.

Amanda Nunes

UFC featherweight champion, Amanda Nunes has admitted that she was more or less unfazed by comments made by bantamweight champion, Julianna Pena after their UFC 269, in which the latter claimed she was the first mother to become a UFC champion in promotional history, despite the fact Nunes has a daughter with long time partner, Nina Nunes.

Nunes, who co-headlined the December pay-per-view card against the Washington native, suffered a stunning second round rear-naked choke against the challenger, dropping her bantamweight crown in the process as well as her status at two-weight champion.

Amanda Nunes suffered the snapping of her 12 fight winning run in her loss to Julianna Pena in December

Following the massive betting upset victory, however, Pena received criticizm across social media, after she claimed she was the first mother to become a UFC champion in the history of the organization, despite the fact Nunes and her partner Nina had already welcomed their daughter.

“I’m not trying to take anything away from Amanda Nunes, she’s a wonderful mother, but I gave birth to my daughter,” Julianna Pena said. “I feel like for giving birth I am the first mum champ. That, to me, is also a little feather in my cap.”

Nunes, who has since been booked to coach the next instalment of The Ultimate Fighter against Pena, claimed that she was not surprised by those comments, due to the way Pena carries herself, but noted that if she wanted to have a baby herself, she could.

“Honestly, like, the way Julianna (Pena) carries herself, I know that’s (comment) coming from her,” Amanda Nunes told assembled media ahead of UFC 271. “So, that no bother me that much. Like, I posted, and I say, ‘If I want, I can’. If I want, I can have a baby. I don’t have any problem. But I have to push something ‘cause when I went through the IVF process, me and Nina (Nunes) I saw how many mothers were sitting down crying next to me, because they won’t be able to have a baby.”

“And they have to go through a lot of ways, to be able to feel that loving for a child, and give the love back” Amanda Nunes continued. “So when I heard that from her (Pena), I said, I don’t have to. It’s no bother me, cause if I want to have a baby, I’ve don’t have any problem. But a lot of people cannot have a baby, and that let a lot of people down right now.”

Amanda Nunes wants to prove her backers right when she gets a second chance against Julianna Peña after the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Earlier today, MMA News broke the news that Julianna Peña and Amanda Nunes will be coaching the next season of TUF opposite one another. We now know that the new season will kick off on May 3 after news became public following an appearance from Peña on Ellen. You can peep the official poster down below.

Shortly after this news and the team rosters were released, Peña and Nunes sat down for a virtual face-to-face interview moderated by ESPN’s Michael Eaves. Here were some of the main talking points from the joint interview.

  • Peña reiterated her enthusiasm to give back to the next generation of fighters after getting her start on TUF almost a full decade ago.
  • Nunes touched briefly on her decision to leave American Top Team, stating that she has always wanted to be a coach and that she expects this process to help her in the rematch.
  • When asked what life has been like since pulling off one of MMA’s biggest upsets of all time, Peña stated that she is not resting on her laurels and is looking forward to putting the Nunes chapter of her career behind her so that she can see what’s next.

“Honestly, of course, the belt is something that all of us chase. At this point in my life, I just want to show up 100% how I want to be. So with the belt, without the belt, I just want to really, really prove I’m better than her.” – Amanda Nunes

From Amanda Nunes’ Twitter

In what was perhaps the most noteworthy tidbit from this interview, Nunes claims that she was not 100% in her UFC 269 bout against Peña and that her primary objective going into the rematch is not about winning, losing, or championships, but just showing up at full strength, which she claims was not the case last December.

Nunes did not specify what precisely was ailing her, however, it is common knowledge that she reportedly came down with COVID-19 last year, which is what caused the postponement of this fight, which was originally scheduled for UFC 265.

You can view the full virtual face-to-face interview below.

UFC bantamweight champ Julianna Pena and former champion Amanda Nunes will be spending a lot of time together to begin 2022.

Pena announced during a recent appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show that she and Nunes will be opposing coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter 30. Filming will reportedly begin later this month.

Ariel Helwani was among the first to report that Pena and Nunes were the frontrunners to coach the upcoming season.

In addition to the coach booking, Pena and Nunes will square off later this year in a bantamweight title rematch. Pena defeated Nunes in arguably the biggest upset in UFC history at UFC 269.

It’s unclear when the rematch will take place, but the fight could be scheduled for as soon as this summer. According to UFC president Dana White, the promotion has most of the events booked with fights through May.

The TUF 30 season will feature heavyweight and women’s flyweight prospects looking to earn a spot in the UFC. Pena and Nunes will also be showcased and will more than likely skyrocket their bad blood while competing during the show’s filming.

Amanda Nunes, Julianna Pena Set To Coach TUF

Before the loss to Pena, Nunes had been regarded as one of the most dominant champions in UFC history. At one point, she had not lost a fight in seven years since she fell to Cat Zingano in 2014.

Nunes had hinted at needing an extended period of time off after the devastating loss to Pena. But, it appears she’s ready for a quick turnaround and a chance to get her place on the bantamweight throne back.

The TUF season will be filmed at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas. Last season, featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and top contender Brian Ortega coached against one another in the return of the show.

The last time two female UFC fighters coached against one another was the infamous Joanna Jedrzejczyk/Claudia Gadelha season. Pena and Nunes will have the opportunity to make the upcoming season the most exciting one yet.

UFC middleweight Bryan Battle is looking to pick up where he left off ahead of his fight with Tresean Gore at UFC Vegas 47.

Battle was supposed to face Gore back in August before Gore pulled out with a knee injury. Battle then took on one of his Team Volkanovski teammates, Gilbert Urbina, and won the fight via submission.

It was the summit of a mountain of hard work put in by Battle during his time on The Ultimate Fighter. He went from the last pick by Alexander Volkanovski to winning the season’s middleweight championship within a span of a few months.

During an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA, Battle explained what went through his mind in the time shortly after the biggest win of his professional career.

“Obviously, right after the fight one of the biggest things is just a huge relief,” Battle said. “Something you’ve been preparing for an extended period of time. It seemed like something that would never be possible. There’s a lot of things that have to go right to not only be on TUF but to win TUF. After the adrenaline wore off, it was a waterfall of emotions. I don’t know if I’m just getting more emotional the older I get, but when I do cry I really cry. That was just something where it wasn’t the result or conclusion to my hard work, but it was the result of years and years of working hard and grinding. Taking a big step towards the overall dream.”

Bryan Battle Went From Last TUF Pick To TUF Champion

Battle trains at Hayastan MMA in Charlotte, NC. Despite the extra fame that came with winning TUF, he doesn’t plan on moving to a bigger gym anytime soon.

As Battle gets ready to make his middleweight return to the octagon, he knows there’s unfinished business with Gore. The winner of the fight can arguably call themselves the ‘true’ TUF winner after the original matchup was postponed.

Nothing has been easy for Battle in his young MMA career, and he’s anticipating the best version of Gore at UFC Vegas 47. Fans can expect fireworks and months of anticipation coming to fruition in Las Vegas.

What is your prediction for Bryan Battle vs. Tresean Gore at UFC Vegas 47?
