The UFC heads to Buffalo, New York, for the first time in more than 20 years with a solid offering on pay-per-view Saturday.

In the main event, light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier defends his light heavyweight belt for the second time against Anthony Johnson in a rematch of their excellent fight from 2015. Until Jon Jones returns, this is the best fight that can be made at 205 pounds. The winner will be a worthy champion.

The co-main event is likewise excellent. Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman attempts to get back on track against the surging Gegard Mousasi, who has won four in a row and six of his last seven. In a wide-open middleweight division with a logjam at the top, the winner of this bout will find himself in the mix for the next title shot after Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre finally meet in the Octagon.

The rest of the card drops off in terms of name value, but not the quality of the matchups. Keep an eye on the pay-per-view opener between Will Brooks and Charles Oliveira in particular, which should be a barnburner.

On the preliminary card, talented prospects reign supreme. The welterweight bout between Sean Strickland and Kamaru Usman will determine a new member of the elite in a division that badly needs some new blood at the top. Shane Burgos, Gregor Gillespie and Magomed Bibulatov all have a chance to make statement wins.

Let’s take a look at each matchup.

UFC 210: Which Veteran Will Get The Pink Slip, Thiago Alves or Patrick Cote?

So UFC 210 is just days away and despite a card filled with many unfamiliar faces, there are two veterans of the game smack in the middle of the main card as former middleweight title challenger Patrick Cote faces off against former welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves. Both men have seen brighter days during their mixed martial arts careers and despite some tough losses in their recent outings, are still two dangerous welterweights.

Patrick Cote has had a reputation for two things: being extremely durable and hitting like a mack truck. Both qualities can be supremely beneficial for a fighter, but when mixed together in one package can spell doom. Why do I say that? Well, if you consider the fact that you know you have a durable chin and bricks for hands, the likelihood that you’re willing to wade through the fire to land one good shot rises exponentially. It’s not a proven science, but all you need to do is to watch the fall of Chuck Liddell and understand how dangerous the combination can be. That said, Patrick Cote has chosen to round out his game as he’s gotten older. Rather than relying on power punches to win fights, Cote now utilizes his jab more often as a range finder as well as with some pop. He also uses his wrestling pretty effectively and will do well to use that tool in this fight. Sure, he could possibly win in a striking battle against Alves if he’s on his game, but why risk that when you can at least make the Brazilian striker hesitant on the feet. If a clean takedown isn’t available then Cote is better off pushing the smaller Alves against the fence and smothering his offense.

On the flip side, Thiago Alves may not be starching opponents as he once did, but he’s managed to keep the dream alive with some competitive performances against Jim Miller and Carlos Condit. Alves isn’t using his kicking game as much as he used to, but when he does, his opponents would do well to get out of dodge at all costs (just ask Jordan Mein). Alves’ game is no longer as aggressive as it once was, choosing rather to wait on counter opportunities more often. The days of flying knees and blindingly fast low kicks seem to be in the past. That said, Alves should be using his longest weapons in this fight. He’s the smaller man in this fight in general size and height. To get inside and rattle off striking combinations he’ll want to blast low kicks into his opponent’s thighs to land damage, take away power from Cote’s punches, and get the bigger man slowing down where Alves can use his superior speed to his advantage. His takedown defense has always been sharp, but if he isn’t mindful he could fall prey to Cote who could use a takedown attempt to push Alves against the cage.

This fight should be a pretty exciting one. I wonder if this is a win or go home kind of match, which is unfortunate as both fighters are still pretty highly skilled.

Another legendary former UFC welterweight champion is reportedly considering a comeback.

Weeks after longtime former champion Georges St-Pierre reveled he would be coming out of retirement to fight Michael Bisping for the middleweight title, the man whom he took the crown from – decorated MMA pioneer Matt Hughes recently told Joe Buck he’d consider a comeback on his “Undeniable” show (via MMA Fighting):

Hughes revealed he would come back versus an opponent he knew he could beat:

“If I could find an opponent that I could definitely beat, I would go again.”

The longtime champ then teased he would fight a former guest of Buck’s show, with many sources speculating that was fellow MMA pioneer Royce Gracie, whom Hughes demolished via TKO in a 175-pound catchweight bout at UFC 60 in 2006.

Hughes went on to mixed results from that point, however, going 5-5 over his next 10 bouts, including a TKO and submission loss to “GSP” and knockouts to Thiago Alves, BJ Penn, and Josh Koscheck that ultimtely lead to his retirement in 2013.

From there, Hughes took a position as the UFC vice president of athlete development and government relations, a position he was let go of as part of sprawling layoffs in the company following talent giant WME-IMG’s takeover of the company in mid-2016.

Although Hughes failed to respond to attempts to clarify the report, several sources have reported he has been in talks with Bellator MMA, and even though the talks are reportedly of a preliminary nature, it would no doubt put him in line for a potential rematch with Gracie.

And hey, there’s always one former legend – and feverish Hughes rival -who doesn’t exactly want to call it quits either, a fellow former champion who might get better match-ups in a Bellator cage.
