Thiago Santos did what no one expected him to do at UFC 239. There, the Brazilian was taking on Jon Jones, and he had a ton of success and ended up winning the fight on one judge’s scorecards, making him the first person to do that. And, to make it more impressive, “Marreta” was dealing with a bevy of injuries.

Reports came out from various places that Thiago Santos had torn every single ligament in his knee. And, he is set for surgery which will keep him out for the remainder of 2019, and until the middle of 2020. The reports say he will be out 8-12 months once he goes under the knife.

Although he did not win the fight, Santos was very pleased with his performance.

“The fight was going exactly as we trained,” Santos said at the post-fight press conference (h/t MMA Fighting). “It was a good fight. I was seeing everything, all of his strikes, and was conscious during the fight. My knee really bothered me during the fight. I did everything I could in the conditions I was. It’s a fight. We’re never 100 percent sure that we will win, but I’m satisfied. I left everything in there even after injuring my knee in the first round.

“I fought four rounds on a southpaw stance, unable to move like I usually move, unable to throw the strikes I usually throw. I didn’t shock the world because of those circumstances, but I did what I could do in those conditions and I’m satisfied.”

Whether or not he gets another shot at Jon Jones when he comes back is to be seen. But, the Brazilian gave “Bones” arguably the toughest fight of his career.

Thiago Santos gave Jon Jones his most competitive fight in recent memory this past weekend (Sat. July 6, 2019).

The pair headlined International Fight Week at the UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) event. Santos brought the fight to “Bones” despite having an injured leg for the majority of the contest. The Brazilian’s power kept Jones on edge for the 25 minutes they shared the Octagon, and the champion was able to withstand a few good shots.

When things went to the scorecards, Santos actually convinced one judge that he won the fight. However, Jones would ultimately take home the split decision victory and retain his title. Jones recently took to Twitter and asked fans who they’d like to see him fight next.

One fan suggested a rematch with Santos. Jones responded by saying nobody would want to see that, and thinks the Brazilian will earn his way back into the title picture with a few more wins:

“Nope, him and I don’t really talk crap to each other, no I want to see that”

“I agree, he did great, let’s see what his comeback looks like”

“Yeah let’s see, I definitely think he’s going to beat most the guys”

What do you think about Jones wanting Santos to earn a rematch with him? Do you think Santos should be granted an immediate rematch?

It was evident that throughout the fight something was wrong with Thiago Santos’ knee in his UFC 239 main event against Jon Jones. It buckled over and over again and caused him problems when he kicked or blitzed forward.

Now, after the fight, the Brazilian’s coach, Tata Duarte, revealed he had knee surgery prior to his pay-per-view (PPV) title fight:

“The camp started with a 45-day delay. Thiago only had two months to prepare for this fight, but still didn’t want to pull out,” Duarte said to MMA Fighting. “The doctor gave us a timeline but we had a problem later. Heather (Linden), physical therapist of the UFC, was the one who recovered his knee. She was at UFC 237 in Rio and kept working on his knee for six days straight and found out what the problem was and was able to fix it. That’s when he started his camp.

“We told him, ‘Thiago, let’s pull out of the fight,’ and he said, ‘No, I won’t pull out.’ He didn’t want to. We did this camp in two months. It should have been at least three months, but we didn’t have that time.”

Santos’ camp believes that, had his knee not been injured, he would have been able to at least drop Jones. Or, possibly even knock him out. He couldn’t put as much power behind his punches as usual. Now, the Santos camp waits for what is next, but they don’t believe it will be an immediate rematch:

“I think there’s no way that happens,” Duarte said. “I think Thiago will have to fight one more time and then they give him a rematch if the path is clear again. The UFC does what they want.”

“But I’ll say this: our goal was accomplished. He shocked the world. This guy’s life story, man, he comes out huge after this fight. He knows he’s a complete fighter, he knows he can do five rounds with anyone. He did five rounds with someone that people say is invincible, the best of all time, and did that on one knee. Imagine if he had both legs.”

UFC president Dana White is not entertaining any shouts that Thiago Santos deserved to win at UFC 239 on Saturday night.

Despite what appeared to be a compromised knee early on in the fight, Santos rallied and fought out the full 25 minutes against Jon Jones in their light heavyweight title affair. Many believed “Marreta” had won the fight as well, with one judge even scoring it 48-47 in his favor.

However, the other two judges saw it 48-47 in favor of Jones, who retained his title once again, only this time, through a split decision. White was not particularly pleased with the judge who scored the fight for Santos, as he let his feelings be known after the event:

”Anybody who scored that fight for Santos is out of their mind,” White told ESPN’s Brett Okamoto (via MMA Mania). “Yeah, you should never judge another fight if you judged for Santos. Santos fought tough, he’s a tough guy. Something happened to his knee or his leg, I don’t know exactly what, in the second round. He fought through it and was tough, but he lost that fight.

Jones Controlled The Fight Against Santos

While it wasn’t the most entertaining fight, White still had appreciation for Jones and how he controlled the fight, especially after taking some damage of his own:

”Jones controlled the whole fight,” White explained. “Walked him down, controlled the pace of the fight, controlled everything. Jon Jones moved forward, at the end you could tell Jon was hurt too, his legs were busted up. He had to be carried out of the Octagon. But, he absolutely won that fight.

”He won. It wasn’t a 2.5-second flying knee knockout. It wasn’t knocking someone out that has never been knocked out in MMA before. But, he went out and he won the fight. It’s not a crowd pleaser, it’s not one of those ones that has everyone jumping up and down for joy, but he won the fight — against a really tough guy who came to fight and came to win.”

Many have since called for a rematch but that doesn’t seem to be happening, at least going by White’s response:

”I thought that Jon completely dominated that fight and I’m not thinking about a rematch,” he added.
