TJ Dillashaw doesn’t believe Aljamain Sterling is a legitimate UFC champion.

‘The Funk Master’ has held the 135lb title since picking up a win over Petr Yan via disqualification at UFC 259 in March.

Sterling appeared to be on the verge of a KO/TKO loss before the Russian fighter hit him with an illegal knee. The 32-year-old was unable to continue and ultimately declared the champion by default.

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Dillashaw expressed his belief that the referee was right to disqualify Yan but he also stated that Sterling is “crazy” to consider himself a true UFC champion.

“I mean he did… that was an illegal knee, but it’s just so hard to accept the belt that way though, right? It’s so hard to be the champion. And maybe I can accept it if it wasn’t a title fight,” Dillashaw said. “Yeah, you get to win, right? But to say you’re a champion off a disqualification is just crazy. I do say that Yan deserved to lose the fight, cause he did something blatantly illegal. But nah, I wouldn’t say that in my mind Sterling is the champion.”

Dillashaw is worried about how Sterling’s recent neck surgery will impact his performances.

“I think Yan’s gonna build a lot more confidence and I think it’s gonna mess with Sterling’s head to see how bad he really got punked, that his wrestling didn’t work at all,” Dillashaw said. And then the surgery he got done, man, I’m really questioning if he’s ever going to really come back to his full stability. That’s a legit surgery. He went and got his disc replaced in his neck. I mean, I don’t even know if he can ever really be [the same]. I mean, we’ll see. I’m not a doctor, but I think that’s something I would have rolled with a little bit longer and got some defenses under my belt and try to make that cash while he can, cause I don’t know man. I just don’t know how he’s going to come back from that.

Even without the surgery, Dillashaw thinks Yan simply has Sterling’s number and will dethrone him at UFC 267.

“But even just the way the first fight played out. I just think Yan’s got his number,” Dillashaw stated.  “Aljamain just doesn’t have enough striking depth or danger to threaten Yan with strikes to set up his takedowns, right? Like, these guys that Sterling’s been able to beat, he’s been desperately been able to get in on them and they freak out. But Yan was able to really keep his composure and not get overly aggressive and kind of play out Sterling in the first couple of rounds, let him gas out, and then just started punking him. So, I think with that being said, it’s going to be a little bit more of the same. Maybe just a little bit sooner even.”

Do you agree with TJ Dillashaw? Is Aljamain Sterling “crazy” if he considers himself a true champion?

TJ Dillashaw doesn’t think Sean O’Malley is championship material.

The former two-time UFC bantamweight champion returned from a USADA-enforced layoff of more than two years last month. Dillashaw infamously tested positive for EPO following his failed flyweight title bid against Henry Cejudo in 2019.

Dillashaw now seems set for another shot at UFC gold after beating Cory Sandhagen over five rounds at UFC Vegas 32. The 35-year-old survived a deep cut and mangled leg to score a split decision win in one of the most competitive fights of 2021.

O’Malley has been making lots of noise at 135lbs for some time now. ‘Suga’ appears to be the next big thing in MMA but has been criticized for refusing to step up his level of opposition. The one time O’Malley did step up to fight a ranked opponent, he was knocked out inside one round by Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

During a recent interview with Submission Radio, Dillashaw noted that O’Malley is a draw but simply has too many holes to ever be a UFC champion.

“I don’t think he’ll become champion,” Dillashaw said. “He’s got too many holes. And they’re just feeding him the right fights cause he’s a huge draw, right?

“For one, they pumped him up, they put him in the UFC pump-up machine. They can do that to pretty much anyone if you have a little bit of character, if you can talk whatsoever, be a little bit colourful, they’ll pump you up. And he’s done a good job promoting himself. He’s done a really good job of that. And it takes work, man. When you see these guys that get pumped up, they’re also putting in the hard work. So, he does a good job of that.

“But we see what happened as soon as he fought Chito. Chito is more of a top-ranked fighter, and he got finished in the first round,” Dillashaw added. “I mean, I don’t think that he will be champion, but he’s a good draw. Hopefully he can make it far enough to where I could use some of that thunder and get paid off it (laughs).”

Do you agree with TJ Dillashaw? Or do you think Sean O’Malley will be champion?

TJ Dillashaw has given a timetable for his recovery from an injury he picked up in his split decision win over Cory Sandhagen last month.

The former two-time bantamweight champion returned to the Octagon for the first time in more than two years at UFC Vegas 32. Dillashaw was forced to fight through adversity to emerge victorious after suffering several ligament tears in his left knee in the opening round of his fight with Sandhagen.

Since then, the 35-year-old has undergone surgery to repair the damage and during a recent appearance on The Calabasas Fight Companion, Dillashaw explained exactly how long he’ll need to recover.

“I just had surgery on Thursday,” Dillashaw said. “I had a medial meniscus bucket handle tear, a lateral meniscus tear, and a PCL tear. Almost everything. I’m just glad it wasn’t ACL. I actually am happy with the results, [because] it would’ve been nine months [of recovery for an ACL tear]. I’m looking at a three-month recovery right now until I can get back to good training, fight for the title at beginning of next year.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Dillashaw is likely to face the winner of Aljamain Sterling vs. Petr Yan II which is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on October 30.

Jose Aldo is gunning to fight TJ Dillashaw.

Aldo made it two wins in a row after outpointing Pedro Munhoz over three rounds in their bantamweight encounter at UFC 265 last night.

While the Brazilian still hopes to become a two-weight champion, another title shot doesn’t seem likely as of yet. That’s because Aldo only lost to Petr Yan in their vacant bantamweight title fight last year.

And with Yan expected to challenge current champion Aljamain Sterling in a rematch later this year, Aldo will have to remain active and continue racking up a few more wins.

Dillashaw is certainly one name that interests the former featherweight king and he is expecting that fight to take place before the end of the year.

“It would be great for me to fight with Dillashaw,” Aldo said at the post-fight press conference (via Middle Easy). “Hopefully by December. I think it would be a great fight and that’s what we expect. That’s what I’m expecting right now.”

Dillashaw only returned to action last month when he defeated Cory Sandhagen via split decision in a five-round war. And although he suffered many injuries in that fight and required surgery, Dillashaw wasn’t expecting a long layoff.

“Went in for a mri today, found out that I suffered a displaced Bucket Handle tear of the Lateral Meniscus and a Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) rupture at the end of the first round landing ground and pound while being lazy in a compromised position,” Dillashaw said last month. “The good news is that these tears are repairable and will have a very speedy recovery. Going in for surgery in the next couple days.

“Loved being in the cage even though I had to push through some adversities to grit out the win. Thank you for the support, it’s belt season now.”

With Dillashaw also likely having to wait for a title shot, a fight with Aldo certainly makes sense in the meantime.
