Tony Ferguson reacted to the news of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s withdrawal — and he didn’t seem surprised.

Nurmagomedov announced Wednesday that he would remain in quarantine in Russia and therefore, be unable to travel to the United States to fight Ferguson at UFC 249 on April 18. “The Eagle” was initially heading to Abu Dhabi to prepare for the fight; however, the borders were closed to non-residents leading Nurmagomedov to go home to Russia. To make matters worse, Russia announced a cross-border travel ban as of Monday.

While there was a glimmer of hope with the news that he could travel to the United States on a private flight, Nurmagomedov ultimately decided that healthy and safety was more important as he officially confirmed he would be withdrawing.

But as far as Ferguson is concerned, there is a different reason as to why the fight is not happening:

“Khabib, I believe he knew already that he wasn’t going to fight,” Ferguson said in a preview of an interview that will air on SportsCenter tonight (via TheMacLife). “We scared him. He had the opportunity to come back from Abu Dhabi. He has the power to take a plane and come back. This is the second time we punked him out. I’ve been doing the exact same thing for 8 years. To and from work, going in there and busting my ass, making sure I’m taking care of business.

“I’m a hitman. Khabib and Conor running around with their tails between their legs like a f*cking dog. I run with the dog’s man, and these guys ain’t dog. They’re a bunch of pussies. Khabib’s a b*tch. I told him I was gonna mop the f*cking floor with his hat, the dude jammed out.”

The UFC have reportedly offered Justin Gaethje as a replacement opponent for Ferguson. But that doesn’t appear to entice “El Cucuy” who believes he’s the real champion.

“Whether or not it’s Khabib, whether or not it’s Conor, I’m all for just whooping somebody’s ass,” Ferguson added. “I already beat the top five in the round-robin, and now they want me to reset and give me another top five? I don’t f*cking think so. I’m the champion already.”

It looks like the fifth time wasn’t the charm with Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the two were scheduled to compete in a highly-anticipated lightweight title fight at UFC 249 on April 18. However, on Monday it was revealed that Nurmagomedov was stuck in Russia because of a cross-border travel ban.

There was some hope earlier today as it was revealed that “The Eagle” could still travel to the United States on a private flight. But that was short-lived as Nurmagomedov took to social media to announce that the fight was officially off while adding that he should have no special privileges.

“Staying home in quarantine and reading the reaction of people to the situation around my fight, it turns out that the whole world should be in quarantine, governments of all countries, famous people around the world urge people to follow all safety requirements in order to limit the spread of the disease, to save people, and Khabib is the only one relieved of all obligations and must demonstrate free will and train flying around the world, for the sake of fight?

“I understand everything and I’m definitely upset more than you to cancel the fight, probably like all others, I had many plans after the fight, but I can’t control it all. The greatest countries and the largest companies of our time are shocked by what is happening, every day the situation changes unpredictably. But Khabib still has to fight, is that what you saying? – Take care of yourself and put yourself in my shoes.”

The plan will now seemingly be to get Ferguson an alternate opponent. Justin Gaethje has already reportedly been offered to “El Cucuy” while Dustin Poirier is also willing to step up to the plate.

It ultimately depends on whether all parties can agree to it — especially Ferguson.

Khabib Nurmagomedov could still be able to face Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 according to Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency.

The lightweight champion Nurmagomedov previously announced he would be unable to make the trip stateside due to travel bans in his native Russia. Speaking about his travel issues on Instagram earlier this week, he said.

“Currently, I am in Dagestan and I am training and preparing every day, although I don’t know what am I preparing for. Because after we came to Russia we also learned that the borders are going to be locked. Same like in the States, same like in Europe, Emirates, everywhere. The whole world is in quarantine right now.”

Since this announcement, several fighters have offered to fill in for the champion and face Ferguson at UFC 249. However the Air Transport Agency in Russia believes Nurmagomedov could still make the trip to America despite the travel ban, they said.

“For Khabib to be allowed to fly to the US on a private jet, the flight company whose services he intends to use, should obtain a permit for flying out of Russia and for arrival in the USA,” the Agency announced, Sport Express reported.

“The companies which provide private air travel usually know which documents the passenger needs to have so that they will be granted entry on arrival at the border.”

Although the undefeated champion won’t have any issues leaving the country he may well have troubling re-entering Russia after his fight on April 18.

“There are currently no restrictions on business aviation from Russia. Upon the availability of approval, the aircraft will be able to fly to the US.

“But there are restrictions on arrival which were confirmed on Monday at the meeting of the Russian government’s Operational headquarters for the prevention of the spread of a new coronavirus infection. Consequently, Khabib could have separate problems with re-entering.” (Transcribed by RT)
