UFC president Dana White has confirmed the promotion’s plans to give mixed martial arts (MMA) fans the fight they’ve been asking for for years – Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson.

According to a report from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the Las Vegas-based MMA promotion is looking to book Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson for April 18 in Brooklyn, New York from the Barclays Center. No contracts have been signed as of this writing, but the report notes both sides are interested in the bout pending further negotiations.

Should the fight be made, it will be the fifth time that Dana White and the UFC have attempted to make the matchup happen. Each time the fight has been scheduled to take place beforehand, it has fallen through due to injuries from each fighter (each man pulling out twice). Now, the UFC is hoping the fifth time will be the charm, especially given both men are in the primes of their respective careers.

The Brooklyn location certainly makes sense, as Nurmagomedov is not too keen on fighting in Las Vegas again after the fine and suspension he received for his post-fight brawl with team McGregor at UFC 229. “The Eagle” was allegedly retaliating for some insensitive comments made in the Irishman’s corner. Although there were rumors of the fight taking place in Russia, Nurmagomedov squashed those as well.

The matchup between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson has been brewing for several years, each man getting better as time rolls on. It will be nothing short of spectacular if they can both make the walk healthy come fight night in April.

What do you think about the UFC looking at Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson for April?

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s next title defense doesn’t look likely to be in Las Vegas.

Nurmagomedov most recently defended his title against Dustin Poirier in the UFC 242 headliner in Abu Dhabi back in September. Of course, his first title defense came against Conor McGregor in Las Vegas last year.

However, “The Eagle” has long spoken of his desire not to compete there again after the fines that he and his teammates were given for their part in the post-fight brawl that took place following his win.

Instead, it looks like Nurmagomedov’s next fight — seemingly a dream fight against Tony Ferguson — will take place where he won the title; Brooklyn.

“Even if they (Las Vegas) apologize or not, we found a new venue for the fight,” Nurmagomedov said in a recent interview in Uzbekistan (via @MMARusContext). “It’s going to be in Brooklyn most likely.

“Im not sure about the date yet. We’re still discussing it with the UFC but it looks like it will happen at the beginning of April.”

It’s interesting to note that Nurmagomedov and Ferguson were originally booked to face each other for the undisputed title at UFC 223 last year in Brooklyn. However, Ferguson slipped on a cable a couple of days before the fight with Al Iaquinta eventually stepping in.

Hopefully, the fifth time is the charm and we finally see this fight.

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will likely be fighting Tony Ferguson for his next title defense.

However, per Nurmagomedov’s manager, Rizvan Magomedov, “The Eagle” and his camp already have their desired opponents mapped out. Speaking to Fight World Turkey, Magomedov confirmed Nurmagomedov wants Ferguson next, before facing welterweight legend Georges St-Pierre.

“Our opponent is definitely Tony Ferguson. There’s no other name that deserves it. We wanted the GSP fight, but GSP didn’t get along with the UFC. For this reason, our only and most valuable option is Ferguson.

“However, it would still be wrong to say 100 percent in this fight without signing. If the UFC and GSP can negotiate, we want to meet GSP after the Ferguson fight,” Magomedov said.

Of course, there has been much talk about a rematch with Conor McGregor down the line. Nurmagomedov has made it clear he wants McGregor to win a few more fights and earn his way back to the title, as the Russian submitted the Irishman back in October of last year.

That remains the same, as Magomedov maintains Nurmagomedov has zero interest in the fight right now.

“The Conor rematch is not interesting at the moment. Khabib and his team have already listed the conditions of the McGregor fight. He must fight other names and win. He must show again that he is a worthy opponent and deserve the belt competition.

“If he can do it, Khabib will give him the rematch he wants. Only with trash talk, there’s a 0 percent chance of winning this fight. Clear and clear,” Magomedov said.

Do you think Nurmagomedov should fight Ferguson and St-Pierre next?

It sounds like everyone is onboard for Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson taking place next. Nurmagomedov comes off of a successful title defense over Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.

As for Ferguson, he has long been established as the deserving contender for the title. It sounds like “El Cucuy” might finally get his shot. Speaking at a fan Q&A during fight week at UFC Moscow, Nurmagomedov was asked if he’ll fight Ferguson next.

“The Eagle” noted that he’s about 95 percent sure that Ferguson will be his next opponent. In regards to the fight being in Moscow, Nurmagomeodv said that possibility is “highly unlikely.”

“Possibility of Ferguson being my next opponent is i would say %95. Because the fans want it,I really want it and UFC wants it.But it being in Moscow is highly unlikely.”

During an interview with “The Schmo” late last month, UFC president Dana White confirmed Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson is the fight he’s trying to make next for the 155-pound title.

“Nothing is holding it up,” White said. “The fight is in the process of being made. And, you know, it’s obviously the next fight to make so it will happen.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson is, in fact, the next fight on the UFC’s radar. It looks like the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion is planning an early 2020 date for the matchup.

UFC president Dana White recently did an interview with The Schmo to talk about several UFC-related topics. When asked about Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson, White confirmed it’s in the works for the first quarter of 2020.

“Nothing is holding it up,” White said. “The fight is in the process of being made. And, you know, it’s obviously the next fight to make so it will happen.”

When asked specifically if the fight will happen in the first quarter of 2020, White directly responded, “Yeah.” Nurmagomedov was initially targetting a return around February or March after his submission win over Dustin Poirier in September. It looks like he’ll get exactly that.

In fact, there’s a possibility the fight could take place in Nurmagomedov’s home country of Russia, which could fill-out a 75,000 seat arena in St. Petersburg. Fans have been waiting for a fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson for several years. Unfortunately, every time the UFC made the fight, it fell through due to injury. Hopefully, history does not repeat itself this time around.

What do you think about Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson happening in early 2020? Do you think the fight will actually come to fruition?
