Former interim UFC lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has been due for a 155-pound title opportunity for quite some time now.

He could very well face the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Dustin Poirier next. “The Eagle” and Poirier will headline UFC 242 from Abu Dhabi in September. After the pair unify their 155-pound titles, “El Cucuy” might finally get his crack at becoming the top dog at lightweight in the UFC.

However, Ferguson has pretty much cleaned house at 155 pounds, aside from the champions in Khabib and Poirier. Once that job is done, Ferguson teased to MMA Junkie last week at the UFC Hall Of Fame ceremony that he could be jumping up to welterweight:

“We’re fighting for a title either way,” Ferguson said. “Superfights and all that would be interesting as far as (Conor McGregor) and all that good stuff, but Khabib and Poirier, (I’ll take the) winner of that obviously or if someone falls out for the title, for the belt.

“Later on I can knock out everybody at 170, but literally the most important thing right now is Khabib. Give me that belt.”

Ferguson comes off a second-round TKO victory over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone at UFC 238. “Cowboy” was unable to continue after swelling up his eye following an attempt to blow his nose. Now, Ferguson awaits his next Octagon bid, which will hopefully be against a champion.

However, Ferguson reminded that he started his UFC journey on “The Ultimate Fighter” at welterweight, and is ready to return to his roots once his title aspirations at lightweight are fulfilled:

“Yeah, absolutely. I’m getting bored,” Ferguson said. “I beat everybody (expletive). They send me up to 170 (pounds), I’m going to tell them that I’m up there to collect rent.

“I get to boot their (expletive) to 155 (pounds) now. It’s funny how that happens. I started at 170, I moved to 155, and I might have to go back up, but it’s part of the program. It’s part of the game.”

What do you think about Ferguson possibly moving up to welterweight? Do you think he’ll have the same success as he did at lightweight?

Tony Ferguson will be paying close attention to UFC 242. There, in the main event, lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, will look to defend his title against the interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

It will no doubt be an interesting fight given the stakes, but also because of how good Poirier has looked as of late. The interim champ is on a four-fight winning streak and a six-fight unbeaten streak (No Contest with Eddie Alvarez in 2017).

During this run, he has beaten all former or current champions in major promotions, with wins over Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway. Yet, Ferguson believes his skills won’t be enough to beat Nurmagomedov:

“I see Khabib winning,” Ferguson told Helen Yee of Eyes on the Game. “I mean, Poirier’s got some very strong boxing. His forward pressure, I think Khabib is going to be able to slip and throw. I just think Poirier fights off the ropes. I think I’ve said that a couple times.

“And unless he does that real fast, it’s a bad habit to have, and you get punch drunk from that, and you get dropped. And with Khabib, he gets you on the ground, it’s game over.”

Should that happen, it seems likely that the Tony Ferguson vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight will finally happen. It has been a fight fans have been clamoring for, for quite some time. Whether or not Ferguson is right is to be seen. But, the oddsmakers agree with “El Cucuy,” as Khabib is the betting favorite.

UFC 242 goes down live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the du Arena in Abu Dhabi on September 7.

Do you think Poirier will be able to get the job done against “The Eagle” in Abu Dhabi?
